For whatever it's worth, "salsa" comes to Spanish from Arabic, where it also means "sauce"

In Russian, we use GULAG (all in upper case) to describe the whole state operated system of concentration camps, because Glavnoe Upravlenie LAGerey, main administration for camps.

Thanks for the comment -- and of course, лагерь comes from German, where it also means "camp" and was also used for the even more infamous death camps there during World War II. In Danish, I think it means "warehouse" which is somehow related to "lager" as a type of beer, not sure how though
@@WorldisOurThing right out of my mouth! I mean beer of course. But the latter is normally spelt лагер with a hard r at the end, sometimes is colloquially both spelt and pronounced лягер, somewhat German-wise
@@WorldisOurThing btw Germans themselves try to avoid calling them Lager oder Konzentrationslager, normally saying just Kz (ка-цет); I believe the cause is the beer again. Some “late outsettlers”, Volga Germans who moved to the country mostly from Kazakhstan after the Union opened the borders, find this funny because .kz marks the kazakh websites. Heard several times something like “мне нужно в кацет продать квартиру”, I need to [take a trip to] Kz to sell the flat, said with a smile. Soviet humour so soviet.

Sure, lagern in DE means to store/to keep [in a cool dry place eg], same root with Lage (location/position/situation end so on), this may be an obvious cognate with the English lay (remember the Grimm’s law: g in continental German languages tends to turn into y on the island). Yes, layer.

LOL -- I've tried to make sure this channel doesn't become about me, but I did do a blog some years ago on my website, and there are some pictures of me there, including my taxi license photo from when I was 19 (edge.worldisourthing.com/index%20g.htm) and a photo from 2003, when I had ridiculous facial hair (about halfway down the page edge.worldisourthing.com/index%20e.htm ) -- I am now clean shaven and in my 50s so I look even worse :-D
