    This is one of those stories to which you have to pay close attention. It was so brilliantly done that many people don't realize that there are actually two stories being told (past and present) so there are two endings that are merged back to back and this is why they are confused.

    • @cantankerousters
      @cantankerousters 6 месяцев назад +3

      That’s interesting. Can you elaborate on this? I love hearing people’s opinions. Myself, I thought maybe she was dead & that’s why the train was there when it shouldn’t have been & perhaps her decision to approach the young lad was her fate in going to hell.

    • @JAIMIA1984
      @JAIMIA1984 2 месяца назад +2

      @@cantankerousters The beginning is present time when he is saying he is going to tell a story. The story he is telling is about his encounter with Connie which happened in 1964 (she was his first) so what we are listening to (He and Connie on the train) is still the story being told and that story sort of merges with it going back to present time when she begins to walk down the platform towards Davey (right when he begins to talk @39;16: "So...". Now it is present time again and he is giving the listeners the closing of his story (this is when you realize, HE is Davey which is why he got so emotional on the train while talking to Connie when describing certain events because he is actually remembering/reliving the pain, him knowing what kind of birds the first girl liked). He also mentions seeing Connie for the first time while talking @40:42 after he had spent YEARS looking for the girl. Although, still in the present, Connie's story ends at @42:09. @42:33, he is about to go to whomever he was waiting for at the beginning of the story because she is now at the station. Notice, when the girl says hello to Davey at the end, it is not Connie's voice.
      Davey also has supernatural powers where he can manipulate a person's mind, surroundings, move things, create fire, etc. (listen to how angry Davey felt from @33:38 when she ran out and described what he wanted to do but "he did nothing" and later says how Davey told himself to wait @40:33. Also, using his supernatural powers is how he is able to confuse the girls and get them on his train (Connie lost before finding the station) and take them to that old station. He asked Connie about this while on the train, and he tells her to be careful of how her "imagination can change the world that you take for granted."
      He looks for girls who were like "the girl" who came from good families but held themselves at a higher standard. Ones who judged others based on that standard so would only talk to people who were in the same "class" as them. (Notice Connie felt like he was safe to talk to based off of how he was dressed. She also wanted to hear the story because of how he described the man's coat). He also remembers being one who people like her would not associate with and this is why he got upset when trying to explain the difference of classes. (He was the son of a farmworker; the girl was from a prominent family).
      Davey wanted to "punish and unite" with the original girl and "consummate" their relationship but he never saw her again. @40:41 Is when he first saw Connie, she caught his eye, and he decided she would do. You can hear Connie yelling "Let go of me!" while in the fire. He continues to do this it over and over again to other girls. Davey is some sort of demon who was consumed by the first girl because he genuinely loved her.

    Without revealing anything about this story, i just want to say its one i listen to often.
    Its nothing so great, or fanciful or scary or happy or tragic..
    Its just a tale that somehow reassures & because i know its ending & have heard it many times i can concentrate on the words, the brilliant acting of
    Clive Swift & the steady build up
    & how easily trust can be misplaced.
    Also the unfair treatment of those who serve the Gentry & nobility & that they observe their place, bow to their betters
    & never step out of place, which was once the case, not that long ago.
    How easy it is to lull someone into anothers trust or situation
    Its an excellent story, very well written & something i imagine someone like Dickens writing.
    Every time i see it pop up on my scrolling menu, i set aside 45mins
    To relax & listen again.
    So anyone wanting an uncomplicated, old fashioned type tale of intrigue, tension & mounting fear, then this is the
    Perfect play.
    Regards & Peace
    🇬🇧👧

    ❤Grateful for the performances and the writing as far the dialogue & plot..but there are logic holes a mile wide. How does "Davey" manage to arrange the train. Any aspect of it..from the driving to no other passengers...how does he switch the points to the old track..he never leaves Connie's side for a moment..How does he burn down the old train station again and again.. It's a helluva of a lot of paraphysical power to ascribe to one disgruntled ex-station master.. and not even a dead one..
