This is the story I heard about how San Diego was chosen as the site for the Anchorman movie. Adam McKay, the writer/director, was all set to have it take place in Portland when he had dinner with a San Diego news broadcaster named Jack Smith. During dinner Smith told McKay outrageous stories about Harold Green, an anchor that Smith had worked with. McKay was so impressed that he decided to have the movie set in San Diego and the rest is history. If you ever saw Harold Green on screen, the resemblance to Ron Burgundy is unmistakable.
You're correct! In Detroit, we were surprised as Mort Crim worked with Carmen Harlan forever and they were great. We always assumed he was patterned off of Bill Bonds!
There a lot of famous athletes came from San Diego and they were featured in the Hall of Champions. Also, great players from San Diego teams like Dan Fouts, Tony Gwynn, Junior Seau, Trevor Hoffman, Bill Walton, just to name a few.
A little known fact, San Diego is home to more Heisman Trophy winners than any other city in the world (4). And for a long time, San Diego was home of the only highschool in the nation with two Super Bowl MVPs. A lot of great football talent has come out of San Diego over the years.
I can’t believe no one noticed or acknowledged the pain Ron was going through after he threw that burrito and his dog was kicked off the bridge… they basically just started the beginning of his eventual replacement
i've been to the SD Hall of Champions. a lot of famous athletes came from SD area or made a name for themselves in SD - more than you would think. you go in thinking this can't take more than 5 minutes, you come out an hour later impressed.
Not from SD but I can think of Alan Trammall, Sid Gillman, Reggie Bush, Marcus Allen, Jr Seau, Tony Gwynn, Phil Michelson, Xander Schauflee, the big white pitcher for Yankees....can't believe cannot think of name, but the list is impressive in SD county...David Wells.....it suddenly came to me.

I remember when that happened. She was very popular. Saddened to hear of her death and shocked to learn of her drug addiction, if I remember correctly. Beautiful woman and talented. Such a shame!
I wonder if it's weird or if it's empowering to have people laugh at Everything you said. I would think at some Point. It would feel unearned or annoying.
Ferrell clearly explains that the characters were based on Crim and Jessica Savitch and their time working together at KYW in Philadelphia in the early 70s. Crim may have gone on to work in Detroit, but the characters are based on his time in Philadelphia.
@@mph7282 Great, well I am explaining to Will and yourself, that Crim spent 20 years in Detroit, where he is more known than a few-year spell in Philly. Glad we could educate you both.
I love how willing he is to do characters and make people laugh. One of the best to ever do it.
Will Ferrell. How does a man go from being the double of Chad Smith to Ron Perlman all in one lifetime.
As a San Diego native, we all thank you! Any press we get we'll take!

Tony Gwynn is totally in the San Diego Hall of Champions
They also shouted out Temecula CA too
Love that Coryell reference
Jessica Savitch...I remember that name so well... I looked her up. Wow, she died at 36 years old in a car crash in 1983. Rip Jessica... o
Weird that her name is so embedded in my mind. I was 16 when she died, yet I remember what she looks like...I don't get why..........
I met a dude that was a radio personality for a local minor league baseball team at a bar, and he also spoke in his radio voice all the time. 😂😂😅😅😂

I’m from Detroit and grew up watching Mort Crim.
If you live in San Diego, you are a champion of life.
These bears are maaasssiiiiiiive.
I grew up with Mort Crim in Detroit
Jessica Savage's death was so perplexing and peculiar. She drowned in a super shallow canal.
Just looked it up, super sad car accident.
Savitch

‘…even though he was a civilian’. Classic.

If you’d like to hear Mort Crim, listen to the into to the White Stripes “Little Acorns.”
Mort Crim was a Detroit anchor that I remember
San diego is where its at.
Harold Greene was the man. Until he shaved his stache in like 81. Then he was just another anchorman.
Mort Crimm, of Detroit news fame as well!
How did you avoid all the shit on the sidewalks in the dump?
Damn bro that would have been so sick if it was Portland!!
Mort Crim Detroit Legend .
It’s not there anymore. Al the items and memorabilia was auctioned off and the place is now a comic con museum
Did you pattern this behind a real person? No. Except yes.
San Diego works way better!
You got more money so you didn't have to use scab labor. Is that what you are trying to say?😂
Yeah, Frank Tank, baby!
