RDR2's single player game pace killed it for me. The choice only for slow walk or sprinting with nothing in-between, always having to fetch my rifle or shotgun on dismount, and suicidal npc's running in front of my horse so I run over them and now have the cops after me. I never finished chapter two but did play a lot online where somethings were better but Rockstar overall drove many playes away by not fixing some problems, creating new problems, and just flat out refusing to do what works so well in GTA online, having an invite only option.

The thing is between 25 and 40% is average for over 99% of ALL GAMES.
The Last of us 2 has THE HIGHEST COMPLETION RATE IN SONY HISTORY... meaning of all the games that been released since the PS3 launch (when PSN and trophies started), more players have rolled credits on TLoU2 than ANY OTHER GAME...
*_But the completion rate is just under 60%..._*
So, when you consider that... A game having a completion rate of 25% is actually on the better side of average. Especially when you consider some of the most beloved games of all time are sitting around 35%.

It's also fair to mention that Skyrim has been a free PS-Plus game more than once... And it is/was on the "extra" tier for PS-Plus... And any game that has been given away for free or is on a Gamepass-like service will have very low completion rates because lots of folks dive into free games just to try them out, with no intention of ever actually completing it.

The problem with Diablo IV is that each season has you starting back at lvl 1. So you gotta spend days or weeks grinding lvl's again if you do campaign skip. having to replay game from square 1 to do season stuff is likely reason why so many stopped, its hard to want to replay same stuff over and over like that.

I don't play MP only, so those games are not even a blip on my radar.
The same applies to live services. A game that i can't play in full total 5 years later is irrelevant to me, so any game with seasons can drop dead for all i care.

Something to remember regarding Starfield's fallen player count compared to Skyrim's is that Skyrim has the benefit of over a decade of mods. The Creation Kit (necessary for creating most mods) for Starfield hasn't been released yet. I'd wager that once the CK is released and the modding community gets going properly a lot of players will go back to it. That's really what I'm waiting for. There's the bones of a decent game there but the modders need the CK to actually put it together.

I think the problem is they disconnected so much from aloy that she just doesn't feel as connected to the player as she did in the first game. The side characters seem to have the familiar aspects. But aloy just doesn't have that connectivity that she did in the first game. I find myself actually disliking her more then sympathing with her in this one.

I'm somewhat fascinated by the Returnal discourse. I'm by no means a highly skilled gamer, but I didn't find the game to be too difficult. I got the game at launch and beat it (defeated the final boss for the first time) within 17 hours of gameplay and after 15 deaths. Now, the game is arguably easier since you can suspend your game without worry and they added co-op, yet I see a lot of new players on the subreddit continually be frustrated by the difficulty. I understand getting annoyed by the RNG you have to grind for the true ending and platinum trophy, but just beating the game once isn't that hard.

I am afraid there is a fundamental fallacy in using completion or progress statistics to determine a games player count, at least in the case of RDR2.
6 years on, I still play it frequently, however, I make no effort to progress the story. The fact is I, like most gamers, am aware of where Arthur's story is going. I am extremely emotionally invested in Arthur and many of the other gang members. Arthur's demise, though I know it is coming, is going to break me. I am perilously close to that point in the story and deliberately do not pursue finishing it.
I spend hours just playing in the immersive world, pursuing enjoyable experiences that do not advance the story. I hunt. I fish. I go and have full nights on the town. I will go to town, have a bath and clean up, visit the barber for a shave and haircut, dress up and go have dinner in a nice restaurant, go see a show, go shopping. I also will ride into town, hit a saloon, have a bar fight or just interact with NPCs.
The fact is, the world is so well realized, I can live in it without progressing the story to it's heartbreaking conclusion. I know a number of others that do the same.
The game is still being played. Completion stats are a poor metric, in this case, to determine player numbers.

That isn't the only metric they are using to come to this determination. I bought the hard copy and played for 10 mins and, for some reason, never went back to play it. idk why. I'm in my 40s and work full-time overnights, so most of the time sleep overrules gaming. COD Mw3 is what i mostly play now. Just for the ease of hopping in and out of games. Do a few matches get my fix or game for hours. It's smooth and not a lot of wait time. Although mechanics and weapon balancing are infuriating, sometimes overall ease of use separates this for me.

I can't understand how Horizon Forbidden West is on this list. Beating Tilda was not as difficult as this video claims. Like everything else in the game, it comes down to what coils you're using on your weapons and gear and make sure you that you have a lot of crafting resources for crafting ammo. Tilda was a hit, dodge, hit dodge tactic to defeat her. Oh, the Wings of the Ten Blast Sling with high damage coils is your best friend in the Tilda boss fight. The list should have put God of War 2018 and the Sigrun boss fight or Rangarok's boss battle with Gna since those two bosses are straight up more difficult than Forbidden West's boss battle against Tilda.
