  • Join me & my dog, Logan (the Whippet) in another journey in our series of "New Forest Walks". In this episode, we follow a circular route from Millyford Bridge (near Lyndhurst in Hampshire). Along the way we come across the "Portuguese Fireplace Memorial", the site of an old Sawmill, evidence of a first World Ward narrow gauge railway and plenty of wildlife (including deer & ponies).
    Route map by Google Maps.

I film using an AKASO V50Pro Sports Camera with an ISteady Gimbal together with a Canon SX400 IS camera.
Route: Start at car park & head North into Forest. Go over wooden bridge. Through a gate into Holmhill Inclosure following gravel track. Cross bridge over Bagshott Gutter. Turn left at Y junction & follow track downhill. Cross bridge over Highland Water. Bear left. As main track swings to right, turn left down lesser used gravel track that runs parallel to stream for 800 yrds - eventually coming to a gate. Shortly after you will meet the road & turn left which will take you back to the car park. the "Memorial" (which we looked at first on the video) will be seen on your right. The Knightwood Oak is a couple of miles away from the main walk.

Thanks Lance. That was one of my early ones .... a bit lacking in presentation & editing I am afraid!

I remember reading the plaque you mention at the fireplace Dave, I think it said that it was once part of a wooden building that burned down leaving just the fireplace and chimney. It was left as a memorial. Lots of deer in those woods. Another great reminder of a great place.

Hopefully a replacement plaque will be put up at some stage as I am sure that many people pass by there (it can be seen easily from the road) and will probably wonder what it is.

Ants in the pants! That was a lovely stroll Dave, always knowledgeable and an expert at highlighting features nobody else would notice if they didn't know what to look for.

Thanks Nigel. Some of these features are gradually becoming "absorbed" back in to the Forest as the years go by so it is always a thrill when you are still able to find something from "days gone by"!

That's one I'll be taking. Ants included.

Those Southern Wood Ants certainly know how to build an impressive nest!

@@DaveFord It might even last longer than the WW2 gun positions.

Dave, another fascinating video. I've been to the Knightwood Oak many times but never been to the Portuguese Fireplace Memorial, but that will be on my list to visit next spring.

Thanks Phil. The Memorial can easily seen on the side of the road, just past the "Millyford Bridge" Car park. There used to be a metal plaque on a wooden post just next to it which gave information of it's history - but that seems to have been removed (or stolen!) completely and so anyone passing by and looking at it might not have any idea as to what it is & why it is there!
