  • In this video I play a number of cartridge and cassette games on the Mattel Aquarius home computer. The Aquarius was my first computer and although we bought it in 1984, it was actually released in 1983. By the time we got ours, it was already heavily discounted and didn't last very long as it had tough competition from machines such as the Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore 64, and the, just released, Amstrad CPC computers.
As the Aqaurius didn't have sprites, it relied on used character graphics to 'build' objects. This is the reason so many games feature the so-called 'Running Man'. Some of the ways they used them were quite clever though.
I did have to cheat and play the games via the excellent AquaLite emulator although I did struggle on games that used a keyboard as many used Control and Shift for up and down, which are in the opposite position to a PC keyboard (hence it was challenging to move up and down when they were the other way around).
This video was made for my Facebook article 'My Retro Life - 1984'.
