Looks like fun. Who gets to travel to Indo or Costa Rica every time they want to surf? So surf what you can get while you can get it. If you wait for things to get "epic" you'll rarely surf. And when you get to you'll be rusty n out of shape.
it's all good if you're having fun. no one craft is better than the other. Infact, back in the day, we started surfing these waves on sea kayaks, surf kayaks and wave ski's.

I visited Seattle recently and got the chance to SUP surf "freighter waves" which are waves generated by big ships passing by.
