+Joni Leppäskä Nice, I've always thought of that too, since I was a kid, kinda of calmed me, it gave me a sense of powerlessness, or maybe giving me power, like removing all the guilty you could feel. Really nice to see someone with the same idea, best regards!
+SystemFreaKk13 i respect that your are confident in your own point of view. Thereby you call what you were doing, "help." I like that you said, "cannot correctly conceive of objective." I think you are somewhat correct in this regard. I think the notion of a truly objective point of view is a fallacy. The definition of objective denotes that of a person (who inescapably has feelings and opinions) holding a view of the things they have feelings and opinions about, as though they were devoid of the feelings and opinions that constitute the only reason they are motivated and thereby expressing said opinion in the first place. The word objective is pretty much as confusing to me as my english attempt to explain it here. Edit: people can try to be objective, and can behave in ways that are labelled objective by others. As humans we have accomplished so much! Just imagine what Galileo, Kepler or Newton would have thought if we could show them this! Watching this masterpiece is such a humbling and profoundly emotional experience. You could even say it is 'spiritual'. To know that we are not just living 'in' the Universe, but that we ARE A PART of the it, and that the Cosmos is of an unimaginably colossal scale is one of the true blessings of living in this modern era! Our world and star were condensed from stardust, and life arose on the planetary surface and developed consciousness, awareness, compassion. As Carl Sagan once said: "We are a way for the Cosmos to know itself." I'll end this with a line from one of my favourite songs - Every Age by Jose Gonzalez: "We don't choose where we're born, we don't choose in what pocket or form, but can, learn to know, ourselves on this globe in the void..."
i don't think we're insignificant at all... can you imagine? how much we feel, explore, love, the profound nature of existence and living on our small planet? honestly it just makes me so overwhelmed because if this is important, then think of how beautiful and important the rest of the universe is. We are A PART of this incredible universe. We are small, yes, but we are interconnected with this vast, unimaginable universe. Yes i cried watching this. I sobbed like a baby with how much love I felt for the sheer joy of being part of this.
I know I'm supposed to feel insignificant, but seeing this huge vastness of basically empty space, gas etc, and how we haven't found any sign of life yet, it actually makes me feel very special and rare. It's a privilege to be alive and to be able to learn about this universe.
When I was a kid, they showed a film clip that was similar to this one at the Ontario Science Centre. It started with a picture of a man laying on the beach, and then it went outward to the farthest regions in space. Then, like this film, it went inwards again right back to the very beginning of the man on the beach. But it didn't stop there. The camera zoomed in on the guy's hand and went inwards, all the way until it showed a picture of an atom. That was really cool. You know, we know more about what is out there in space than we know about what is in the bottom of the oceans. We also know less about the smallest aspects of nature than we do about space. But I love this video because it really sparks the imagination.
+MindofJasonYamamoto exactly my thought...its really really sad actually. If I had one wish it would be to see other planets with lif eon it - how do creatures there live, what civilizations existed etc..
2:37 Really illustrates the scale of the universe, and the immense amount of time it involves. All the radio signals we've ever put out, traveling at light speed, have barely gotten anywhere.
I come back to this video every year or so since it's been out. A beautiful work of art. We are so small in the grand schemes of it all. We have one beautiful life. Live it to the fullest, we got the chance to be here! Take risks, enjoy yourself, spread love.
Perspective: We are but wee specks on the surface of an insignificant planet in a quiet arm of the Milky Way galaxy. The universe is vast. If there is other intelligent life out there it may be so distant in time and space that we never meet. While I'd love a Star Trek universe (minus the Borg) where faster-than-light travel gives us a galaxy where we can meet and interact with many non-human civilizations, I think that's unlikely to happen. What that means to me is that we should cherish the planet we have, because we don't have anywhere else to go. And politicians should be listening to the scientists who are saying we need to do something now about climate change and the environment, even if that means making unpopular decisions.
I'm pretty sure we are not asking the right question, whenever we ask whether there is life on other planets, let alone so-called intelligent living things (it may be a good question, although not an original one, I think it merely reflects our lack of knowledge and narrow-mindedness, and the fact that we are unable to imagine other highly complex entities outside the realm of living organisms (that includes all human-made things, too, of course) with which we are more or less familiar with). Sure, it is highly likely that there are similar life forms on other planets that are similar to Earth, but there may be some other extraterrestrial things on other planets which we wouldn't even call LIFE because these things would be very alien to us and radically different from everything else that we currently know about - strange manifestations of matter that we can't even imagine yet with our present knowledge and understanding of matter and the universe. Just think about it, simply put, living organisms on this planet are really just highly complex manifestations of matter. Who knows what else there is outside this Earth...?
There are millions of intelligent civilizations out there and they probably live in no more than 0,0000000000000001% (or even less) of the habitable planets out there, which is basically nothing compared to the size of the Universe.
Utter speechless awe ..... Mind was lost ..... I could not express this sensation which I never experienced before. Beyond ....., Deep time-delayed tear welled out after like 5 minutes. I felt where I came from, . .... Where I am going back to, . . .... where I belong to, . . . ...... Now I feel more what is this chance of living of my life here, . . ... with you, sharing living time of this 100 years with you. Understanding in concept and seeing with my eyes was totally different experience. It was a total life changing experience for me. Thank you very much for making such a video, Digital Universe, American Museum of Natural History, Visualization software: Uniview by SCISS.
This is so truly mind opening, and I hope to see how much more we learn about space :) It is so huge and we only have such a small portion of it mapped out.
Maren Denison which humans learnt to built using metals and other substances extracted from beneath our very own feet . our journey from when we gained knowledge of generating fire and its uses , when we came across a force between bodies with mass , when we came across force between things with thing named charge , when we discovered that our voice can be clearly heard at the opposite end of our planet , when we claim to show our very own universe's map on a screen , free to view for any human or even a cat ........ it all baffles me and i love this feeling .
This isn't the whole universe. It's half of our horizon in space, the rest of our galaxy is blocking the view from the other half. For all we know, the universe is a million times the size.

I remember watching this video as a kid and straight up crying due to how beautiful this whole spacial landscape was. Years later, I find the URL in my computer, click it, and boom, the same reaction. God I love existence!
Has anyone ever thought about how out of all the things possible in this world, and all of the things that you wish would happen to you in this life, are probably actually happening for you in another universe because there are so manny possibilities of ways things can go? I’m so high right now.
I will keep saying, this is, by far and without a doubt, the most beautiful and wonderful thing I've ever seen on a screen. And we keep looking for "higher meaning" to things. Why? There's all the magnificence and majesty we could ever hope to begin to comprehend.
Brett Verney Well not being able to see it definitely doesn't mean there MIGHT not have been anything at all before the big bang. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there.Take for example oxygen we couldn't see it but it became testable when we found ways we could test it and then there came many other discovers to back it up. The elements/the background radiation that came after the big bang I would say masks what we cannot see. Not too sure about this logic i'm just starting to learn about science. But there should be signs we could catch onto plus not believing in a multiverse would crash A LOT of scientific information/theories because I know a lot of theories like inflation and the string theory which already suggest that a multiverse is possible. We just have to be optimistic that we'll be able to discover the vital signs we could detect. We just need to find a way to test this so the multiverse becomes a theory.
+Brett Verney Won't our cosmic horizon have shrunk due to expansion, however? In a few billion years, what we see will be less than what it is today. Even sadder thought :(
steve prichard Drugs and alcohol are personal pollution, global warming is consequence of the pollution to every life form. Just a different scale, but as much as we are destroying both, we collapse constantly our chances of surviving, individually and collectively. If we can't change this behaviour before the next century, probably the Earth and the Universe would be better without us...
Like someone said, we're universe experiencing itself. So chaos and destroying each other is part of it. It is inevitable. Look at how chaos the asteroid was, outer kuiper belt were just basically how any other object crushing each other. How the supernova would crush other object in an instant time. And blackhole would eating you alive while nearby. Peace were our illusion. The universe were really chaotic, earth and what inside it were no exception.
I think it's funny when people think there is no other advanced life out there, because if anyone noticed our first recorded radio transmission has barely gone anywhere since the 1940s, just wait till some other advanced life interprets that..
***** Thats assuming that other intelligent life is anything like humanity. We are limited in our perceptions of what is possible, other advanced creative species may have a totally different sensory perception of the Universe and therefore create and discover very different kinds of technology.
While I believe that alien life has to exist out there, I would find it so much more disturbing if it didn't. A universe so infinitely large, only to be inhabited by... humans. The beings unimaginably lucky enough to have won the "cosmic lottery" for existence, yet our history is pathed with destruction of our own.
The fact that we exist is an example that Aliens exist, just because that if 1 event is posible to a place in the universe it's safe to assume that it's posible to anywhere in the universe if the circumstances permit, like in the past we thought that our solar system was the only 1 in our universe and our galaxy was the only example etc. time and time again we see that we are not special and if there's 1 example out there it's so much posible that there's more

Torus field as like our heart created us then expanded outward, As this whole universe is made from torus fields creating energy in the middle then expanding outward to yet only go back into the core and so forth.
I don't know how but so many people have misunderstood my comment. My remark was about the perspective! Our planet is so small when we see the size of the solar system, then there are galaxies, which are groups of solar system way bigger than our solar system. And still, some humans think we are the most important thing that was ever made! THAT's WHAT I MEANT!
This has got to be one of the most enlightening videos I have ever seen. Now every time I worry about something I'll watch this to remind myself how insignificant we are and that my problems are really not all to serious
its simply amazing..while watching it I felt like I am on a few minutes trip out there in the universe..I wish I could..lol..but superb work done by the team members..thanx
In the Holy Quran, Allah says : "He is the One˺ Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving. ( 67:2)
Muslims have purpose in life, that is to please Allah through good deeds. Islam is not what is being portrayed in media. Research and pray for guidance , indeed you will be guided.
@@muhammadalihassan Ofc “please Allah” must simply mean do what is in accordance with God’s supremely perfect will. God doesn’t experience pleasure or pain the way human beings do
Ive been enthusiastic about universe, its physics etc since child and this video brings tears to my eyes - not how well done it is made but it sadly makes you realize we will never see the unbeliavable worlds of other galaxies, their lifeforms there, the civilizations which exists and have existed, we will never know how beautiful the universe trully is..and that makes me really really sad :(
Beautiful. If anyone is interested in a space sandbox game where you can accurately simulate/change/effect anything with impressive visuals a lot like in this video.. Play Universe Sandbox 2, you won't regret it.
+Doyle4 Even if that player were going one-by one eliminating entire solar systems each second I wouldn't be worried. Even if he were wiping out galaxies... still incredibly unlikely to reach us before life on Earth becomes unsustainable anyway. Yay!
What this proves is that humanity needs to unite as one and start spreading its' civilization beyond the Earth. Humanity's purpose needs to become finding the purpose of life and giving scientific answers to all questions. Those answers lie beyond this planet.. Shame that we are still just thinking about the prosperity of our nation/country and not caring a bit about humanity itself. "The cycle of hatered continues to function among the human race and will be the reason for it's downfall"
Thought, contemplation, observation, curiosity, consideration and consciousness are what actually gives the universe a chance to be perceived, acknowledged and to some degree, understood. We are the universe experiencing itself. You are.... it.
Guys, I am taking an astronomy class in my university, its the most beautiful and entertaining class I've ever had in my school years. Not only has it thought me to be humble but that we are really destroying our world, by ignorant people who consider themselves as VIP, there is no such thing, we are all important. We can end our world in 5 seconds with all the nuclear weapons each country has. its a 1% margin it may happen each year. And when we do we will die, but the planet will remain, we will become another failed test. Honestly if we don't change in the next 50 years we will suffer great economic loses. even if the earth dies, the universe will remain. Its amazing how many years ago there were people considering the earth as the center of the universe, how they thought the earth was flat, how they thought a supreme being created all of this with his finger. You must respect the hard work of scientists and cosmologists and astrophysicists for discovering all of this information.
Are there any plans for a modern update to this video? 4K 60fps? I find that children tend to get turned off to things when they feel it looks old when compared to modern illustrations. Also, not sure if it's possible with this software, but maybe a cross-sectional cut of the Earth to show how truly thin atmosphere is along with the oceans at their deepest points and how little water there is compared to the rest of the earth.
Thanks for this - its a privilege to be alive at a time when its possible to see the vast scale of the known universe - somewhat puts humanities various petty disagreements into perspective.
Back again because I've watched this since it had a few hundred views and it's still the only video that gives me chills knowing we still are that insignificant in the universe.
Amazing! Thank you for watching! If you haven't seen it, you should check out the 360 version that was released last year: ruclips.net/video/N79TowJOHHE/видео.html

To be fair, as a species we have not done to bad, but yes we are pretty insignificant, especially if there is a more evolved species out there that will undoubtedly have a better understanding for the universe than we do.
and here's what I'm leaving in this universe a comment among thousands of others that will never be read at 2 in the morning on a foggy Monday the 14th of November. 😔
OMG! I look our planet from this distance and i can't believe that on this small planet compare to the huginess(new word :P) of the universe we people are trying to kill eachother instead of take care of eachother and try to explore and learn more about who we are and from where we came from. We people are made of stars(as Moby said) and we are connected to the universe in a magic and strange way. We are not what cellphone we have or how much money we have in bank or what car we drive and all those things that make us lose our magic nature. Really nice video..Magic and sad at the same time. I just hope one day we gonna leave in the past all those sad things we do to ourselves and to our planet.
This video does not make me feel small, on the contrary, it makes me know that we human beings are awesome for having discovered all these things, we are the universe itself trying to understand its own nature.
...and some say that we're the only ones, that the whole universe won't bare any other kind of living beings, that we are unique and no one else exists beyond our visible light spectrum. It may be right we're unique, but I doubt A LOT the being(s) behind all this would pinpoint just one place to experience the joy of material life as we know it. We're less than atoms in a particle of some cell of the whole system. One tiny part of the whole that's forever expanding. Yet we know nothing about it.
I mean they could even come up with Space Age versions or adaptations of JRR Tolkien's Greatest Works just like how they made Treasure Planet from Treasure Island.
It doesn't make any sense to me how an explosion can make all of that (and possibly more). It also doesn't make sense how there can be an explosion from nothing...
No scientist says it was "made by an explosion". It's not like a dynamite stick exploding and creating a house or anything. It's many complicated, interacting processes. Those galaxies, and stars they're made of, and planets too coalesced by gravity. Stars got hotter as they collapsed inward and nuclear fusion ignited. Solar wind and gravitational effects drove gas further out in the solar system, and rock closer to the Sun. That's why we have four inner rocky planets, one of which we're on, and four outer gas planets. The Earth got heat from the impacts of ever bigger rocks that made it up, which drives geological processes such as earthquakes to this day. Beneficial mutations in lifeforms are selected by environmental pressures. etc etc. They're all processes interacting and creating complexity, from atoms to planets to elephants and pine trees to human societies and technology, *even though they arise from simple laws. That's called emergence.* Scientists know all of this very well and that's why so many of them are atheist. Watch the video where Richard Dawkins explains the evolution of the eye. Also watch Melodysheep's video "Our Story in 1 Minute". There's no room and no need for any sort of god. We're beautiful regardless of how everything came about. I think all the things that happened and made our existence possible make it even more beautiful. Most of the elements in your body were forged in supernova explosions. *You're made of stardust.*
There's only one word that keeps repeating in my head. Insignificant. How sad is it knowing most of us will never be able to leave this rock, however beautiful it may be one can only wonder what other beauty we are missing out on.
Melissa Geckensmerf it does but only "kind of"! For example at 2:04 the animation shows the planets. But the planet are (in this scale) MUCH smaller than an individual pixel! Therefore this animation is kinda ... not in scale! If you want you can Google "If the Moon where only 1 pixel" Prepare your mind to be blown away 2 times! :D
In my opinion this is evidence of a higher-being. How I see it, there is no way it could have been all just a coincidence. The sheer immensity and beauty of the universe is astounding. As someone who has re-evaluated their faith and put it to the test, I can proudly still say, God is great. And to all the people who don't agree, that's okay! You can believe whatever you want! I can respect your beliefs just as much as you can respect mine and we can still love each other and our fellow man for what we are- people! That's one of the beauties of life! We CAN still live and love each other every day, regardless of what we believe in! Ignore the people who bicker and dislike each other over things like this and who cannot accept others because of their beliefs or who they are. It's time we stop fighting over this age-old argument and if we want to we could discuss it calmly and postively, not in hostility. But more importantly, we must come together as humans, and unite to work together for the betterment of our universe. To all the Atheists and Non-believers out there, I love and respect you as I hope you can feel the same to me. We all can unite through #Love.
Shikhanshu Agarwal No, we are the universe's conscience. Nature bred us using evolution from micro-organisms up to to the point where we have neural network in our brain capable of grasping any concept and egos that hate not knowing. We are the perfect little machines made in the god's view (universe's view) on the path to universe's self-understanding and singularity. The coincidence is there, but the emergent behavior of life and humanity is to amass as much knowledge about universe as possible.
*UPDATED FOR 2023* You can now fly through the known universe in immersive 360 video here: ruclips.net/video/N79TowJOHHE/видео.html

2:37 Really illustrates the scale of the universe, and the immense amount of time it involves. All the radio signals we've ever put out, traveling at light speed, have barely gotten anywhere.
That sphere represents approximately 100 light years in radius, 200 in diameter.
The feeling of awe and amazement really gets through once the camera leaves the milky way galaxy... The feeling amplifies on the way back.

***** it could be... But how could we know?
Titan is our answer!
Amen
This to me gives the strongest feeling of the scale of the universe of any video I've seen
This is strangely calming.
Utter speechless awe .....
Mind was lost .....
I could not express this sensation which I never experienced before. Beyond .....,
Deep time-delayed tear welled out after like 5 minutes.
I'm trying so hard to understand why did those 895 people dislike this
The truth.
They didn't want to see how insignificant they - we - are. They preferred ignorance, to enlightenment.

@itsjustmyopinion Actually, Earth is in an outer arm, not smack next to the central bulge, as shown in this video.
This is so truly mind opening, and I hope to see how much more we learn about space :) It is so huge and we only have such a small portion of it mapped out.
amazing to think that the whole of the known universe can be represented on a small section of a computer screen.

+dratelectasis Oh, I know, I just like to think of what it would be like.
+dratelectasis who the fuck told you that?
+TheCyanHamster for example that there are billions of galaxies in our universe and then there are billions of universes and so on...
+Brett Verney Won't our cosmic horizon have shrunk due to expansion, however? In a few billion years, what we see will be less than what it is today. Even sadder thought :(
Literally, nothing matters anymore. All my tiny little problems melted away.
Made me Humble after watching it...such an insignificance of us in this giant Universe..! and we fight for our Ego.
...and we're destroying ourselves. Beautifully mind boggling.
Global warming? Or drugs and alcohol?
Pollution. And that by itself is an understatement.
steve prichard Drugs and alcohol are personal pollution, global warming is consequence of the pollution to every life form. Just a different scale, but as much as we are destroying both, we collapse constantly our chances of surviving, individually and collectively. If we can't change this behaviour before the next century, probably the Earth and the Universe would be better without us...
Morality is an illusion. We are supposed to destroy each other. I learned this from Wiki Bear on Conan.
KizzleTheBump hmmmm . agreed . exactly i want to say and love to hear from others .
we cant be the most lucky people in entire universe . simple
Not humans....various organisms. We aren't different from them, just an evolutionary variation. Say earthlings

And there are people who thing they r the center of universe!
The "Center" is relative to humans and human thought. Considering the Universe is ever expanding there is no such thing as the center of the universe
Dawn Creation V Then by that thought process you provided how do you know where the corners reside? And where the center begins
Torus field as like our heart created us then expanded outward, As this whole universe is made from torus fields creating energy in the middle then expanding outward to yet only go back into the core and so forth.
In a philosophical sense it would make meaning. I AM the center of MY universe because if I died all of this things wouldn't matter at all.

I wish every human being could understand the depth of this video and stop the wars.
Ladies and gentlemen, we hereby present the amazing camera that moves faster than light :D

This video does not make me feel small, on the contrary, it makes me know that we human beings are awesome for having discovered all these things, we are the universe itself trying to understand its own nature.

My philosophical objection to this type of video is summed up pretty well in Horton Hears a Who.
my objection to the statement "you're physically small so your problems are insignificant."
I thought that was obvious from my first comment...
...and some say that we're the only ones, that the whole universe won't bare any other kind of living beings, that we are unique and no one else exists beyond our visible light spectrum. It may be right we're unique, but I doubt A LOT the being(s) behind all this would pinpoint just one place to experience the joy of material life as we know it. We're less than atoms in a particle of some cell of the whole system. One tiny part of the whole that's forever expanding. Yet we know nothing about it.

Exactly!
I mean they could even come up with Space Age versions or adaptations of JRR Tolkien's Greatest Works just like how they made Treasure Planet from Treasure Island.
This video makes me feel little and big at the same time.
It doesn't make any sense to me how an explosion can make all of that (and possibly more). It also doesn't make sense how there can be an explosion from nothing...
You know what doesnt make any sense? why my hot pocket is hotter than ill ever be
No scientist says it was "made by an explosion".
