    I’ve been waiting for someone to post about this! I have been playing around with them for a couple weeks now. My first try turned very dark, but now that I know how redken shades eq works I am able to achieve what I want. So I’ll give you my tips:
    First and foremost, if there is orange in your hair, it’s not a level 9. Level 9 is yellow undertones any orange would be closer to level 8 or 7. So that is most likely why it wouldn’t cover your roots.
    Second, the levels and tones of redken shades eq get confusing. It has more to do with the amount of pigment than anything so level 10 has the least amount of pigment, 9 has a little more and so on.
    Third, I found that if I have just used a color or bleach on my hair, it grabs the pigment sooo much more because my cuticle is more open. So when I bleach my roots and put this on, my roots are sooo much darker than my mids and ends.
    I find that these shades pull dark in general, but from my research it is pretty similar to how shades eq function. The issue is that shades eq has a clear whereas this doesn’t. Many many stylists will use clear in all their blonde clients because they don’t need that much pigment to tone underlying tones. I found that 10N is the PERFECT toner for my hair, but ALSO is a good replacement for clear. So if I mix it with 9n it will dilute it just like clear would.
    I hope that helps, but your hair looks really nice! Good luck

      Yes! I was searching all over RUclips to see if anyone else had reviewed them and I found nothing! Thank you so much for all the tips, I’m definitely going to give them another try.

    Thanks for sharing! I do think it looks like a level 9, but something to remember is that ash/cool tones appear darker than warmer tones. You could try adding clear to dilute it if you have any leftover. To avoid appearing too dark, look into adding some 10GI to your cool based toners. I think you'll really like the way it brightens blondes while not appearing too warm or dark. I've seen stylists say that adding a little gold to the formula helps avoid toner appearing to dark on the ends, where the hair is usually more porous and grabs the most color, plus it helps reflect brightness. The 10GI (Gold/ Iridescent) is the preferred choice for the lightest result, but you can also add others like AG (Ash Gold), GV (Gold Violet), VG (Violet Gold). The 1st color is the deposit & the 2nd color is the reflect, if that helps anyone.

    I know I’m late. My hair dresser input is your roots lightened to a brassy level 7 and to tone a brassy level 7, you need a level 7 or lower to tone. If you go a higher level toner, it will do absolutely nothing. I would applied an Ashy level 7 or 6 to only the roots and not touch your ends because your ends were already a nice cool blonde that could be toned with a purple shampoo.

  • @kellydupree6710
    @kellydupree6710 2 года назад +10

    I think the color is beautiful on you!! The midlengths & ends really don't look darker (depth wise) than they did before... I think the issue is that the neutral tone isn't as "bright" of a tone as what you had prior (had more yellow tones, which would make it appear brighter). This is more of a natural sandy shade of level 9 blonde. It truly is beautiful!!
    If you want to brighten up the overall look, maybe try just a few face framing highlights and use a level 10 violet based GVP shades eq afterwards.
    As for the roots, even after using the high lift, they were still not quite the same level as the rest of your hair, so there was more brass at the root. A neutral toner won't counteract brass, so maybe try a violet or ash shade for the root area. You can use 2 different formulas (1 for root area, 1 for the lengths), just be sure to comb through where they meet to get a natural blend. I really wish they would make a Clear version of the GVP formula! But please know that I think this tone really looks beautiful on you (ellebangs has gone darker with sandy tones lately as well)!! It also looks so healthy and shiny, so I think you did a fantastic job!!!

  • @pearcehair1648
    @pearcehair1648 2 года назад +27

    9N is a cool shade, anything cool will appear darker, and also your blonde is really porous so it'll grab a shade darker, that's why it looks like a level 8.
    Next time maybe add some 9v and clear to dilute the intensity. As for the roots, use 7na shades to counter out the orange and give yourself a shadow root 😊

    My hair looks a lot like yours. I just did my roots and didn't even have to tone, even though I pull orange/gold. I used Redken Blonde Idol High Lift Conditioning Cream Hair Color in Titanium with 20 volume. In between, I use the Redken Base Breaker in cool with 10 volume to keep it looking blended. No, I don't have a cosmetology license. I have to do my own because of a nerve condition on my face and scalp.

    Is it a Gloss? Like a toner type. Or a hair color??? Were your roots lifted up enough for a 9n?

  • @paigezmuda5636
    @paigezmuda5636 2 года назад +15

    Roots lifted to a 7 possibly an 8, hard to tell in the lighting. As said before in the comments, color does not lift color, if you would of lifted to a pale yellow or closer to the inside of a banana it wouldn't be as dark with that toner choice. If you added a V to the formula you would cancel out some of the yellow tone. While your giving your hair a break, I'd suggest a blue shampoo for your roots instead of a purple as blue will help cancel out some of the orange color. Purple/yellow and blue/orange.

    Btw always Tone roots with different formula as zone 2 and 3...you probably but I just wanted to say that....T-14 might work on your orange roots as well....just an FYI you can buy Redken without a license....bought online but it cost me $13.00 per bottle and 20-30 for the liter of gel to gloss solution...and please Wendi....never look at the swatches....they are used on White hair.....they are such a misnomer.....but overall I think you did GREAT on your HAIR....and to strip out GVP hair gloss demi....use a hair masque like with coconut oil 2-3 hours then clarifying shampoo....strips faster because the oil soaks into the hair shaft that the color has coated and then shampoo to wash away the oil....and when in doubt always test lighter a 9 before a level 8....

    • @Ang4God777
      @Ang4God777 10 месяцев назад

      The shades eq toner is a translucent color gloss, demi- permanent which means it won't lighten or "lift" your color only deposit color if that makes sense. Look up color wheel on Google. If your hair is too orangy, you can use a toner that has a blue base in it to cancel out the orange. Purple cancels out gold or brassiness. Demi permanent also means it will fade out over time, usually 3-6 weeks depending on how often you wash your hair and also how often you use heat appliances on your hair ei: blow dryer,straightener,curling iron,hot rollers etc. I hope it kind of made sense to you, I know it's a little bit technical but if you really wanna learn for doing your own hair or someone that trusts you to do theirs at home. I highly recommend any of these videos about Redken shades eq, especially the ones for beginners. I just bought the gvp brand to try it out and will do it tomorrow. It's a little cheaper at Sally's with my professional discount than the real name brand shades eq. I have used a Wella toner before from Sally's with 20 volume developer( peroxide) and eek, my hair looked like a gray purple( light gray purple) I had to do what's called a bleach wash to get the Wella toner out of my hair and it still did not come out completely. I never used a lot of toners when I worked in a salon, I mostly worked at Supercuts and Great Clips and when I was at Supercuts they weren't doing color yet . I can do a root touch up no problem but highlights,lowlights, balayage, it's a whole different ball game. You can also get really good videos from professional stylists on Instagram, I follow many of them. My suggestion to you would be to do a test strand somewhere in the middle of your head of hair, then you can get an idea of how the color will look everywhere. Good luck and I hope your hair turns out great and you save $$. If you have a lot of hair, buy at least two bottles or tubes of color in case you need more. If you need to cover gray,you need to use 20 volume developer with a permanent color.

    I love it! I normally use a 4n in color charm with a 20 developer. I have to do the sides first because my roots get so much lighter than the rest. I've heard it's because it's warmer there than the ends. 🤷‍♀️ I have no idea what I'm doing, just covering grays between professional services. 😅

    • @alicealfarue1
      @alicealfarue1 2 года назад +1

      If your using 4n with 20 volume JUST at the ((new growth only)) and it's still turning out lighter than your existing color that is at your mid- shaft to The ends, then you need to add A LITTLE BIT of 3n in order to darken the new growth alittle more so it will blend with your med-shaft to the ends.( formulation for new growth ONLY). I would say if your own initial formulation has been turning out just SLIGHTLY lighter, then maybe just add 10 grams of 3n, but if there's a big difference between them, then of course you will need more than 10 grams of 3n but for you, it's better to start off with a small amount
      And determining on the outcome you will see if it was perfect or you need to add a little more the next time. Hope it helps!

    Love the GVP brand ....i think the patent ( it was created in 1989) has expired....the 9N would Never knock out the Orange.....the Titanium or T series is what you need....the base is a Silver/Blue and only on the orange roots....i would mix 1part 9T to 1part 9N ......i know 3 months later and this might be too late but I LOVE ....SEQ Shades EQ....might I suggest buying the gloss to gel ....i bought a liter for $20 ....its a thicker gel that allows it to stay put....the processing solution they sell at Sallys is the original....which is great for processing in the sink bowl at the salon....little messy at home ....the reasons for the bad reviews is hmmm operator error.....people not researching the products and lack of knowledge ....the T series I love....it has a silver/blue with background of grey .....ive used it on a orangey level 5 I used a 8T .......the 20 minutes is necessary for the demi and semi or oxidative and non-oxidative dyes(to us chemistry buffs) to work ....40min is for grey hairs and I suggest the NB series if covering grey.....download the Redken SEQ ....google it.....you can use Clear gloss to lighten the color....turning an 8T to 9T if needed...tevhnically for every 1minute you leave on the hair equals 1shampoo.....soo 20min for 20 shampoos.......
    I love the color you got....on the ends....and 9n was perfect for the zone 2 and 3....thats Redken speak for midhafts and ends....zone 1 = roots to 1/2 inch....each zone accepts color differently....the P or Pearl series is nice it cut gold and a bit of orange like less intense of the T series....and I prefer Redken SEQ over Wella toner anyday....but remember you don't have to use a 20Vol with wella toner....10Vol is fine but 20Vol if you need lift and tone....from say level 8/orange ....and using a T18 with 20 Vol will give you level 9/yellow and T18 is purple so very light blonde ...toning is such a skill .....remember the color wheel....and your levels.......the only thing on GVP that doesn't make sense is that the light Ash Brown is a 7V and the medium Smokey blonde is an 8T.... a level 7 is a medium blond....and level 8 is light blond ....other that GVP is on point

    Shades eq is supposed to.be done for 20 minutes no heat, alot of stylists think that if they leave a toner on too long with shades it will be darker than its supposed to, it won't if the formulated correctly. If you leave a.level 8 on a level 9 or 10 for 20 minutes than yes it will go too dark, if you leave a level.9 on a level 9 for the 20.minutes, it's going to do.whatnits supposed to....shades is also kind.of time released, 10ag is a new.ine...ash then gold. Gold is the least put in, but If you dont.leave it ling enough it won't deposit all the gold it's supposed to.
    I'm a stylist just thought I'd give an expert opinion. Shades is all.i use to tone.

    Confused 😆 why!? Because like myself you had healthy soft hair..not hard filled in hair? It looks great, but i just noticed that.
    Point being however, more like a 20 volume with 3 blended tones over time to go darker, because if you're at a 10, you have to harden the cuticle of the hair with protein over time before the strands can handle the amount of dye needed to cover up what your looking for and the same with gray hair coverage.

    So yah I thought so I’d say it’s a 7/8 maybe …. I’m afraid of that stuff lol bc I’ve heard so much bad about it. I’ve used just about every color blind at Sally’s too… I’m finally just now gonna give tryin to find something to get my root melt color right so I’m buying shades new off eBay for that. But I’ve had no luck with it likeI get red orange tones after like literally not even 2 wks of toning so.
    But thanks for the vid I was just curious tho I actually thought it was something else. I was trying to find out if I have to use the redken solution for shades eq or can I use this generic brand solution since it’s supposed to be a dupe. But Im thinkin I’ll just stick with paying Lil extra now lol. Plus I’d have some left over for next time time too anyways …but anyhow …
    Better luck next time love … doesn’t look bad at all tho for all over color too and it’s got lots of
    shine 💞
