as for the soles disintegrating: the last leatherboot-generation of german army also had a dissolving-soles-issue; they used some spongy material to cushion the steps, and that dissolved with time, but shoemakers replaced it easily... ALSO:
i just received my meindl-surplus-boots "Kampfstiefel leicht" - the ones you tested recently (i seriously have to stop watching your vids), got them in good condition for not so good money. only complaints i have so far (can't go out for a walk yet):
    - i ordered EU45 to get the width i need. i wear 43.5 otherwhise, with the 45 i just gotten the "just right" width. wonder why they do not build "wide" shoes anymore. not sure if the 44,5 i was eyeing before the order wouldhave had the width i need. wonder if my pair of boots will suffer the same "not at the exact planned bend-spot"-thing...
    - they squek. the lashing holding the ankles are rubbing on the leather; have to find the non-colored leather-cream to "soften" that spot a little. they in general look like they could make good use of some TLC tbh...
    - the soles. obviously, they gotten it renewed shortly before they were returned, but the material... i don't know. it reminds me of the old erasers from school for erasing pencils, just hardened. somewhat slippy on non-flat surfaces, but great grip on flat. not sure if i should get them replaced with the soles i now have on my KS90 and the KS14 right away - or risk it going outside as soon the doc cleares my knee..?
also - since we talked about the KS14 (AKS):
the AKS isn't as high as the meindl, giving you more freedom to walk, but less stability in "dire situations when you want maximum stiffness around the ankles"; also i do not sweat as much in the meindl as in the AKS, but that's due to the AKS being all seasons thus heavier, the meindls only for summer/dry. to lace up the shoes, aks has the better system; it is more flexible and easier to lace, also to make it a little looser in between during a break or so; the meindl is "fixed" by that clamp-thingy of the two-zone-system. as soon as i can test the meindl, i'll let you know about further differences!
EDIT: btw - how to apply TLC to these meindl light-boots? is there some "leathersoap" cleaning the pores i could apply?)

I used to only buy Meindl (Army Goretex) boots and they would last for ages. However the last 2 pairs, the pair I used most frequently the soles eventually disintegrated. But much more annoying I had one pair in storage as my emergency back up, had a look at them one day and soles had turned to a black powdery substance. Very disappointing I am now using boots from another manufacturer from Bavaria ) . No complaints so far

@@RedBranchBushcraft Lundhags was founded in 1932 by the shoemaker Jonas Lundhag. He started out making boots that he peddled to local outdoorsmen in Jämtland, Sweden.
Ever since then, knowledge and traditions have been passed on from generation to generation. We still strive towards the same goal in what we do and view function and durability as most important.
We don’t know if it is has to with the climate. Or if it simply is in the blood. But one thing is certain, there is something special with the mentality in Jämtland. That we are a very stubborn people is no cliché. When we do something, we don’t give up until we have gone all the way.
Lundhags boots soon became synonymous with comfort, functionality and quality. We still remain true to the same guiding principles. Each Lundhags product stems from a passion for fostering the tradition of manufacturing quality products for the Nordic outdoors. This is why, 90 years on, Lundhags is still an icon.
Our heritage is essential and together with our values; autentic, nordic, sustainable and functional this creates a foundation to build a solid and strong brand. In all branding and communication, we want the Lundhags brand to come across homogeneously, and as a uniform brand. Which is quite a challenge since the world of marketing is constantly changing, due to social media, automated ad tech and audience analytics. Brands need to stay on top of these changes to successfully reach their audiences, especially as consumers become savvier and more skeptical to what the brands are saying and listen more to peers and influencers.

Tough outdoor boots that will last you ten years of rough wear are a thing of the past. Two of the last quality leather boots to do so here in the States, were Filson's "Uplanders", and Russel Moccasin's "Birdshooters"; boots that could be resoled four or five times before they actually just fell apart after a few thousand miles and ten to fifteen years. Now, they only sell junk made in China. Boots for hard men with calloused hands and rock-hard feet no longer exist. At home or in the forest, I wear Red Wing Iron Rangers or my old Corcoran army jump boots; at 70, it's hard to break habits.

It's not just an issue with Meindl. I have some Asolo Powermatics where, not only has the EVA in tge sole compressed to half its original thickness, but the PU wedge in the heel of one boot is disintegrating. I believe it's known as hydrolysis. It's an issue with stored footwear. I've come to the conclusion, whilst looking into this issue, that there's no point in buying boots to lay aside. Use them or lose them, basically, as the sole materials just aren't designed nor capable of lasting for years. A pair of 'new old stock' boots could start to fall apart almost immediately if they're old enough. There's an interesting article/video on the subject which you can 'google' but of course, RUclips won't post comments with links. Easy to find, however. Goretex / fabric linings are another bugbear, and I'm transitioning towards leather-lined boots as I replace worn out items.

I have had 2 pairs of Meindl boots. Dovre extreme GTX is the model. They have worked fine. About soles. Sole padding is made usually out of PU and that gets brittle when they get old. Less you use them, sooner they get brittle. I have used Lundhags boots for years now. No GTX-membrain, just good quality leather. I have walked and hiked about 2000km with them and they look good as new.

The issue of disintegrating soles is nothing new. I've owned Hanwag, Meindl and Lowa, and all of their soles went Infinity Gauntlet after couple of years, whether they were worn constantly or left on the shelf for extended periods. And I've heard similar experiences from others. Do they share the manufacturing process? Or OEM some of the process to, say, Chinese factories? This never happened to my Scarpas and Zamberlans, so I'm inclined to think that there is a defect in German boots makers' manufacturing process that they may or may not share. I don't know. Disappointed because I really liked my Hanwag Alaska GTX. Those boots were unstoppable.

I had a couple of pairs of the Vakuum MFS original version and they were great, followed by a couple of pairs of Himalaya’s (BC crampon rated) and then went back to another pair of Vakuum MFS with the updated sole. The first ones were great, no issues. The Himalaya pairs were heavy as expected and the rands perished and cracked up on both over the years, but they held strong and were worn out overall before then. That last pair of Vakuum MFS just spoiled it for me. Crumbling midsoles, like a pair of dodgy knock-off yokes. I moved on to Han Wags and love them. No issues and a similar fit to the Meindls which I always really loved. Many thousands of miles in the hills and bogs and never a blister or ache. I’m old-school about looking after your feet properly. So shame about the Meindls, glad the Han Wags fill that role now.

    Hey Wooly,
after the surgeon greenlight my knee for "start it slow", i finally had the chance of taking two walks (both 10km) in the Meindls (german "Kampfstiefel leicht" - the lighter one). I'll compare it to the AKU (swiss KS14) i did another 10k with today, i have:
    1. the two-zone-lashing: kinda a good idea, but a total annoyance if you're one of these who want to change the lashing-strentgh mid-walks; AKU is a bit better, no two-zone, yet it allowes for different lashing-strength over the feet and the heel.
    2. walking in the two shoes: i defenetly should have gotten the next bigger paif of the AKU. In the beginning, the AKU are more comfortable, but at the end of the walk, the Meindl are over all more comfortable than the AKU (maybe that's only bc the meindl are 1,5 sizes bigger than the AKU, and my feet having more space to roam)
    3. ...the sole... well, it is apparent that the Meindl have been serviced for desert-alike campaigns; the rubger sole i mentioned in the last post has a realy good grip on sandy and lose ground (incl. gravel-ways), but as soon you walk on surfaced or even paved roads, the grip is mediocre at best; the new soles i gotten for the AKU (and the old ones that were standard) have a better balanced grip for all services...
Am I happy with the Meindl? Most defenetly YES. As with the KS90 i gotten me the next bigger size, i finally have enough room inside. Though - i think i could have gone with size EU44,5 for the Meindls instead 45, the "normal" width in the Meindls is big enough for my wider feet.
Will i need to change something on the Meindls? Most defenetly YES:
    1. new soles. i'll get the "swiss army standard sole" fixed on them, just to have the balanced grip the KS90 (and the AKU after retrofitting) offer.
    2. i need to get another insert for the inside-soles; just to lift my feet a bit, and that i can use my orthopedic inserts (eventough the Meindls are wider than normal, the inserts still don't have enough room)
(any advice for that inssue? would be putting some PU a good idea? The Meindl-inserts that came with the boots are "cushioned", the orthopedics would probably not deal with that to good?)

I wore nothing but meindl in the early 90's for Hill walking and military. After a couple of pair as time progressed, the quality of the sole deteriorated , didn't last as long as the original vibram, wasn't as grippy on wet rock/ ground, it would also clog up with muck leading to some sketchy decents. Stopped using them for military use due to a loud squeak emanating from the boot, I also found the cracking of the leather at the creases and their size got too narrow too,not suitable for a wide foot.

Personally I love Meindl boots; good fit, robust and waterproof. First pair lasted almost 10 years and were well used but soles eventually gave out. I bought another pair (original boots were Makalu but are now discontinued, new ones are Himalaya I think.) but I have had a problem with soles disintegrating. I sent them back to Meindl and they resoled and refurbished them. Paid about £100 but it was a cheaper option than buying a new pair. Very pleased with the results but I hadn’t had them long. I thought the sole issue was perhaps caused by temperature fluctuations when stored as they were kept in the loft which was very hot in summer. I thought the high heat may have affected them in some way? Resoled boots are now kept in more stable temperatures so I hope that helps.

Adidas terex gtx fantastic boots, love mine, bought them after my salmon boots failed. The top lace hook pinged off and nearly had my eye out. The sole wore out super quick ( I walk like a chimp on the outside edge of my feet ). The terex are still going well over a year of wearing them

I have 3 pairs of Meindl boots, never had a problem really. But they are newish, so have to wait and see. Jackson’s in Belfast was a great shop, pity they closed. Bought a lot of gear from them

Jackson’s was always worth the trip up from Dublin for a few bits of clobber. And their delivery service was insanely fast too. I ordered around lunchtime and had the parcel at my office in south Dublin at 8:30 next morning, even 15 years back. They really knew how to do things right.
