The very first Elton record I ever bought, in late 1974 at age 13. Still love this version. I remember it being a huge hit in Australia. Was on the radio constantly.
When he gets to “Cellophane flowers of yellow and green” I have goosebumps on the top of my head and in my arms. It’s been like that from the first time 24 years ago. Thank you!
Oh boy do I relate! As a 12 year old kid this track was the most incredible thing I had ever heard. Everytime I’ve heard it since it has the same effect. Thanks for watching!
I remember being up in Lake Tahoe with my cousins and making everyone watch Elton and the band play this song on TV. Can't remember if this was that moment but it was shortly after the release and it was already a big hit. Great memories.
Thoroughly enjoyed your video on the band('70-'75), haven't heard this in a good while. Man I love that keyboard solo, always surprises me...thanks Jon
Nice. I was two in 1974.. I have so many strong memories of discovering 70's Elton in the 80's. I still remember the first time I heard Rocket Man about 10 years after it was released. Love your work Jon. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing and watching! I remember when Rocket Man was first released a friend's sister had the single and every time I went to their house I'd make her play it over and over again. Great memories.
Thank you Jon for sharing this video with us. I always loved this cover of such a classic to begin with. 1974 was such a great year for me to actually see the Elton John Band play Live for the first time in Atlanta, Ga. I feel very fortunate to have seen him in 1976 with Caleb Quaye on guitar & Roger Pope on drums. The 1970's were such a magical time for him & his great band. I really miss those days tremendously.
You are so blessed to have seen him with the original guys! The first show I saw was the ‘75 lineup. It was amazing of course; but I was a huge fan of the original Elton John Band. This period is magical for me too. That’s the perfect word. The two songs I was absolutely nuts about at the time were “Lucy” and “Pinball Wizard”. That’s why I’ve been releasing these special edits. Have you seen my other Elton episodes? If you haven’t seen this I promise you’ll love it. Thanks for watching! 😂😂😂 There's just no escaping is there? But onto other subjects, I agree this is the greatest Beatles cover ever. Totally different approach that captures the same spirit of the original. Plus John was there~ Thanks for watching!
When I was in the 8th grade, my best friend invited me to go with her and her Father to Birmingham, AL on the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour. My Mom said no and I cried for a week. 😊
The exact same thing happened to me! I begged my parents to let me go to that concert in Seattle. I was just a bit too young at the time. I was so crushed. Finally they relented and let me see Elton on his 1975 tour. I didn't get to see the original band but it was still an amazing experience. Thanks for watching!
@@JonBlackstone My parents were always very overprotective and I just couldn’t understand why I couldn’t go since her Dad was going, too. Heck, I STILL don’t understand.
Your videos always take me back to the past when we were kids. It's so refreshing, touching and emotional. Technically and cinematically well done too... I feel 50 years younger. I'm the 12-year-old fan again who holds a cover of Elton in his hand and tries to understand the lyrics and for whom this music is like magic. Your videos are simply great, such beautiful memories that you give us... thank you
English musician Elton John released a cover version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" as a single on 15 November 1974. Recorded at the Caribou Ranch, it featured backing vocals and guitar by John Lennon under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O'Boogie (Winston being Lennon's middle name).
Jon, your first version of this was great, too! Nice nod to the band in this new version. So, what do you think - are the band members (Dee, Nigel, Davey, and Ray) wearing their "Philadelphia Freedom" cover sleeve clothes?
Yes! I looked at the PF single photo and they're wearing the same clothes (except Elton). What a great catch on your part! I actually posted about it after I read your comment and I changed the video description to include the info. I suspect they may have taken the opportunity to shoot that photos while they were at BBC studios filming "Lucy" (which was broadcast on Top Of The Pops). That would make perfect sense! Thanks Douglas!
@JonBlackstone. Do you by any chance have the video of Nigel performing Only One Woman on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand? I would love to see that performance again. If anyone can find it, I know YOU can. 😊
I can only find the interview with Dick Clark right after the song ends. Here's the link for that if you haven't seen it. Let me know if you find it! ruclips.net/video/n4yFQL6jYuA/видео.htmlsi=GN8AHEriv4GJ7A_C
The performance I watched was on the tv. I distinctly remember that Nigel was dressed totally different and looked more like a Native American with a huge turquoise belt buckle on the front of his pants.
Great video! I personally preferred the Beatles version, but John Lennon himself said he liked Elton's version better and that he wished he had recorded it this way with the Beatles, so who am I to argue with that?

No disrespect to you my friend, but I would pick the original band over the 1975-1976 schmozzle any day of the week.
Amazing video and sound quality; thank you for the (Blackstone Edit) Jon; great stuff.
Much appreciated! So glad you enjoyed it!
Man, this brings back such great memories of my teen years.
me too...
Easily my favorite version of any Beatles remake - *Also props to whoever positioned the girl in red behind EJ😁

You know you need Balls of Steel to cover that song. Elton & the Boys hit it out of the park.

Great but he’s lip syncing to John Lennon’s part.❤
