your setting is the most liminal thing of this video, this just feels like home. warm and comfy. in brazil we have some older houses with this style.. the plants, strong wall colors and all.
The main difference in feelings I’ve noticed for the nostalgia photos vs the uncanny ones: “I’ve been there/I want to go there” vs. “I shouldn’t be here”. Really enjoyed your video!
i haven't thought about it like that before but this is a really good point! the uncanny ones definitely feel more like what i'd see in a horror video game while the nostalgic ones feel like locations in a dream
A common theme of liminal space photos is the inability to see very far, whether it be from darkness, fog, or a structure. Sometimes it can be comforting but it often really adds to the creepiness
Some of the "uncanny" ones feel like looking back at the strange and unfamiliar world that my brain constructed when I was very young (e.g. before 5 or 6 years old). It's like a kind of liminality where the focus is the period before a coherent image of the world takes hold. Some memories that I associate with this feeling are of my childhood brain grasping at disparate images and experiences to construct a mental map of the world; like the image that I formed in my mind of England as described in books that my parents would read to me, or the exaggerated "places" I would build into my mental map of my neighborhood--the giant hills or the long strait roads. To me, this is the central feeling of liminal spaces (at least the ones I find compelling). It is the centering of fragmented perceptions that our brains construct on the path to coherence.
big yes on the idea of these spaces feeling like memories from when we were really young + not quite aware enough of the world to remember concrete images (into adulthood at least). really well said!!
it feels like spaces i visit in a dream. i dont find the term "liminal space" to be that specific. like its technically correct but i would describe the specific feeling of these liminal space pictures as more like "empty memories"
I think liminal spaces remind me of what my dreams look like, like the surrounding environment , that’s why they feel so odd, yet comforting when I look at them
Hey, I have no idea how I got here, but I have noticed youtube is promoting smaller channels to me more often recently, which is nice. Really enjoyed this video - very inspiring and it's interesting to know I've always been drawn to taking photographs like this, nostalgic, empty, between spaces without even really realising it was a thing. I grew up in a town in the UK that was built in the 60's to house people after world war II - the arcitechture was inspired by brutalism and then the shopping "malls" were built in the late 70's so the whole vibe of the place is super interesting. Despite this, it's now a social housing dystopia. It always was, but now it's just got violent as there are no opportunities for kids. Fun fact, at one point, maybe 15 years ago, it had the highest teenage pregancy rate per capita in europe. Anyway, I guess I always felt like my upbringing was full of these types of spaces. I would spend a lot of time out walking around and inhabiting these places, trying to find somewhere quiet to smoke as a teenager. I don't live there any more, nor do my family or many of my friends. There is nothing there for me. But I do have a strange longing for these short scenes of uninhabited urban peace. Kind of went on a tangent there apologies for my rampant adhd. Thanks for the vibes x
The indoor pool pic is from a hotel in Maine called The Katahdin Inn & Suites in Millinocket. The outside is even more haunted looking. Genuinely looks like you’re going into one of those ‘back rooms’ horrors.
Ive been watching liminal space videos for a while and this video stuck out to me. I really love the explanations you give and the pacing of the video. Overall I really love this video and in my opinion more people should watch this. Thank you for making such a great essay on liminal spaces
I know I’m late but this video is absolutely awesome! You covered a lot of points that most liminal space essay don’t and so I thank you for taking the time to research and be descriptive with such a fascinating and ongoing topic! Great video, keep it up!
I like the thought you put into it and how it made me stop and think. Also your voice is very soothing, you took your time and overall the vibe of the video made it enjoyable.
How lucky I am that the algorithm presented this to me. I loved the video - great explanations and really fitting bgm!! The element of nostalgia is really interesting to me. As someone that grew up in Asia, the places like the Chuck E Cheese party hall are unfamiliar to me so I didn't get as strong of a feeling from it, and I wonder what a nostalgic liminal space might look like to someone from my background. The words that kept coming to mind while I watched the video was "not quite there" - I think this applies to the otherworldly examples given too, since it's as though they're not quite real (perhaps this is a kind of transitional feeling too). Best of luck on your midterms and your future video making endeavours!
oh man, I would love to know what liminal spaces specific to your childhood look like! the images I chose to showcase in this video are obviously super specific to my own experiences and that’s so limiting :/
wowowow great work. concise analysis and such a striking shot composition of the orange room. i’d like to research liminal spaces as an aesthetic more so thank you for these sources. earned a sub 😁
i felt anemoia to american things when i was a kid because i was fascinated by usa and i had the imagining of it from cartoons (like gravity falls, regular show, teen titans and gumball). i do like the liminal spaces from my country (Poland) but i dont think theres good enough representation of it. thank you for the video
i will share one of my dreams which feel liminal from when i was very young. i was driving with my family on a very green only grass field (like windows xp wallpaper) and we drove to a round kfc which looked like the kfc bucket. inside you had to walk in circle to reach the cash. i think it ended here
oh my gawd oh my gawd i love the presentation of your videos!!! and i love the stuff you have to say about the topic!! i subscribeddd x3 its so cool to see another small channel!
I like to watch old, restored pictures and film footage of years past, like from Victorian times even, or more recent decades. Computers touch up these images to make them more immersive, and when I watch them I have many of the same feelings I get from watching liminal images. Because the people in these films are long dead, I still feel the same combinations of eeriness/ loneliness/longing that I may feel from seeing liminal images. I like to watch old film footage and liminal videos right before I go to bed, because the feelings of unreality I get provide a fertile transition to dreaming.
woah, your dream routine sounds so interesting. I am also super drawn to early film footage and feel that same eeriness, even though I can’t look away. I think it’s because the people/animals on film are long gone but look so lively. we’ll never meet. it’s such a strange feeling
Some gba games feel super empty! Even Pokemon games feel liminal sometimes, at least the top down pixel ones. I haven't played any of the 3d ones, but even with the npc pokemon trainers scattered around the region they've always felt... Empty, and not quite right. (Doesn't make me love them any less though lol)
I love this video and the way it is put together. And it is so accurate and well-researched. Excellent job! As for Liminality, I've always defined it as "a feeling of immense potential, but devoid of all Kinetic energy". I feel that this is why Liminal Space nearly always lacks any living creatures or movement. A place where one could imagine Time.exe has stopped.
This video has been recommended to me, I hope it gets more views. It's really informative. Also, your backdrop/video setup is pleasing to the eyes. Keep it up! 💯
I love this essay! I stumbled across the Backrooms a couple of months ago, and have been obsessed with liminality since. "Bleak" is the word I associate with it the most, even with smaller spaces. Have you seen the movie "Fargo"? The film makers use a lot of shots that I feel very liminal, in a broader definition of the word.
Comforting? Like I finally found a place that feels as disconnected from the grounding of this boring universe as I do? They’re very close to a home away from home to someone with chronic disassociation.
- no, not (boring)- painful and tragic while also enjoyable, hmmm. ((Too real)), I don’t want consequences to be real, change, or inevitability. Liminal spaces feel like an escape from the gaping maw of eternity.
hi! for some reason, i'm having trouble accessing the article rn, but it's called "liminal spaces - lost in unknowable loneliness" by sabukaru. if you google this, it'll pop up. good luck! I'm glad you're checking it out :D

I notice one main thing out of all of the photos.
There isn’t any humans where we see humans often so it makes it feel unnatural and uncanny

this video is really good! super interesting and defines liminality way more succinctly than i've seen a lot of other writers and creators have.
