Instead of using phrase: Shukriya Yar you should be using Shukriya Dost. Although they both have kind of same meaning but YAR is usually used toward very close circle of friends where as DOST is more polite. Shukriya yar is ok to be used toward people of same sex and same age group. It may be taken bit offensive if you use is toward old and females.
