Great video. Those jumps were impressive. Looks like quite a thrill tarpon fishing like this. Thanks John
Good video! I think the Manatee's thought that green rag was some vegetation. It's amazing a big fish like that using bait that small.
You’re one Hella of a fisherman John Skinner.
Great video..That size is cool to catch. Landed a 36 inch from the jetty last year on a crocodile spoon.. Lots of fun.
Another great video, John.
Hi John, so happy to see you got away and safe from those 2 Mamaties .
Great action! Thanks John
Excellent video! Fishing with two manatees beside your kayak seems wild. Fishing down there is sooo different than Canada lol more beavers than manatees here.
15:03 you can see that tarpon rise next to the piling for a sec 👍🏻
Great video as usual John.. I'll be back in Punta Gorda Wednesday afternoon.. I hope the weather improves by then..
The manatee can be kind of territorial when they're mating or looking to mate. It isn't unheard of for them to bonk into boats/kayaks in an aggressive manner.
Great video. The juvi you caught was the size I was talking about in my comments on your other video yesterday. After you catch 8 or 10 of those we were ready to call it a night. I've hooked a lot of big ones there to buy never got a single one to the boat
That eat midway thru the video was sick!
the Manatee's look pretty friendly
Too friendly for me. I just worry about one spooking under the yak and upending me.
that's an incredible fishery
I have both the inshore rod and the psychedelic. I personally would feel a bit under gunned with the inshore against these fish. But obviously it’s no issue. I’ll try to catch some above slot stripers on it this year!
I think it’s safe to say they wanna become your pets 😂😂
John is the manatee whisperer lol
John, he or she really likes you, be nice. All kidding aside, that's scary. Great video!
I bet a surface iron like a Tady 45 would be perfect for Tarpon
John, I've lived down here in Florida for nearly 25 years and I have come to find that if the manatees are in the water where you're trying to fish, it's best to just pick up and move to another area, the reason I say this is because they stir up the grass and spook the trout and redfish out of those areas
Thanks. I'm fishing 15-20 feet of water there, so they're not an issue in that regard. I'm just worried they'll upend me.
Your 100% wrong I catch jacks, pompano, and snook off manatees all the time, they stir up the grass releasing and scaring crabs, shrimp, and baitfish off the bottom.

Bigger than it looks on video?
That thing looks huge!
People feed them iceberg lettuce and the rag probably looks like it
Man I would love to see you catch some sharks down there
This is one noisy location with all that bridge traffic.
Where's sunny Florida? It looks as grey and dank as L.I.
Good video, that second fish was a horse. Glad you beefed up the tackle much more fair to the fish. The catfish has to be on the bottom but you didn’t seem need it. I did some exploring and found your e-bike poon spot . You are missing out that whole creek is loaded with juvies and jumped a 30 lb fish in the next opening up on my fly rod. Try every opening to the creek mouth…………..I was bow and arrow casting with the fly rod and hooking them . Keep the videos coming 👍
You sure you have the right "e-bike poon spot"? It's 25 miles from this spot.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing near your home, long mosquito walk, hang a right for another quarter of a mile , careful walk oner the bridge and you are there. I was a Captain in the NYPD Detective bureau, I can find any place from a video🧐. To bad you leave so soon, the Mid Pointe and CC bridges become insane from mid March till June.
Yep. Thanks for telling me you fish the cat tails on the bottom. I tried both. I should stick to lures.
I just spent the last 20 minutes watching bow and arrow fly casting...
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I went there with a spinning rod the first time with tiny terror eyez and did well, , so I figured I could flycast the first two pools, after that I had to adapt and overcome, found the bow and arrow cast and it actually works. See you out there
put that catfish tail under a balloon @ 4ft down, ive caught some horses in that exact spot on cat tails.later in march the north side of the rr bridge around the crab pots gets really good too.
Thanks. I did try that for about half the trip. Amazingly they never touched the cat but hit the lure.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing yep,the bait needs to be on a float, they travel around 3-6ft under the surface staying in the warm plume of water out of the orange river, ive never had luck with bait down deep.
That fish you hooked up yo around the 22 minute mark damn near spit the bait into the kayak. Slung that lure decent.
John, you are like a professional athlete! Fishing 12 months a year, how is it possible your shoulders hold up? Also, do you find any of your northeast startegies helpful down south or vice versa? Thanks. Be careful out there!
Name the yak ..... Manatee magnet !
Manatyak!
John, specifically what about the blank on the skinner rod do you think gives it the capability to work a light lure and absorb the jumps? Thanks just started building rods, trying to learn whatever I can!
It just has the right taper. Took the factory a few tries to get it where I wanted.
Hey John, so sorry to bother you. I went out to the spot today and I didn’t see any tarpon. Should I try the early morning? I’m afraid I missed my chance because there doesn’t seem to be any cold fronts for a long while….
There are not many fish this year as compared to the last few years. I've only had one trip out of about five when I saw a decent number of them. Otherwise it's been few and far between. I've been fortunate that when I have seen even a few, I've hooked up. In my first three trips I had only three hits, but was lucky to land two good ones.
Sealions will do that
Hi John, I was wondering what type of fryer it was that you were using in your Sheephead catch and cook video? I couldn’t find a link to it. Thanks!
amzn.to/3CwTHAq
Thank you! By the way, I have kept fiddlers live for almost a month. They love to eat lettuce!
Do you use sidescan to help locate fish on the kayak John ? I know you see the tarpon tagging air on the surface but I'm wondering if it would work well spotting fish tucked up close to the mangroves. I use it here every winter in very shallow water and it works amazing. 455 khz will spot fish up to 250' away. Just curious. Sight fishing is tough from a seated position on the kayak
I don't have SS on the kayak.
Hi John I have fished the lower part of the river in April and have hooked up 10 times in one day and have had the tarpon break me off with 120/lb leader Do you ever plan on going to the salt strong chapter meeting in Cape Coral ????
I'm gone by mid-April because the Northern fishing gets going, and my boat's out of the water a week before that. I bet it really heats up as they start migrating in. If only I could be in two places at one time!
What water temp are you fishing???
Hey John, are these fish leader shy? What’s stopping you from throwing a 5 inch swimbait on 50lb test like a NLBN? Thanks so much!
The first two hookups are on 50 leader. I've tried a variety of things here, including swimshads, and the Zoom fluke I use has been the best at getting strikes and holding onto them.
Thank you so much! You said you were fishing 20 FOW. How do you determine the depth to get better strikes? Seems like you were riding more closer to the surface. Thanks so much again
What color zoom do you use? Seems to be highly productive
watermelon red flake
Thank you for responding. Love your videos!
@@BrianMajczak The watermelon red flake and pumpkin are popular colors in Florida for all species. Fish see red and green above all shallow watercolors.
Could they be attracted to the green rag because they think it’s food? Have you tried a white rag? I know I’ve seen them eat lettuce in captivity.
They come right over to the kayak regardless, but the green rag really had them going. Lesson learned.
Exactly where you cut that head off underneath that head is Jesus on the cross and it’s a rattle as well. If you shake it, there’s a beat inside of it and it’s unbelievable. I can’t even explain it to you but all you have to do is just let the meat right off the headand you would’ve seen what I was talking about. It is exactly like Jesus on the cross in that head area, the bone structures.
Don’t recall such manatee issues in past videos. Has something changed?
It's the location, although not every trip.
catfish is the best tarpon bait there is.....
Take your paddle and slap the water, they will leave
Manatees aren’t scary or dangerous. I doubt they are annoyed with humans despite that humans have destroyed most of their habitat and are everywhere with their motorboats cutting and killing them in the few tiny bits of habitat left.
I fish with manatees all the time in a kayak. They are harmless and I enjoy having the privilege of seeing them. They might not be around much longer and given that there are less than 10 thousand of them on the entire planet and there are 8+ billion humans maybe try being a little less childish about your situation.
"Childish"? If you google "kayaked flipped by manatee" you will find many accounts and some videos. I would not want to be one of them in deep water on a cold morning.
