Christopher Reeve got his acting start on LOVE OF LIFE. He played Ben Harper, who was married to Betsy and Arlene at the same time. What a love triangle.
When Christopher had the role of Ben, Ben did the bigamy crime. His replacement (Chandler Hill Harben, the final Ben) did the time for the crime - while in prison the other men tried to rape and sodomize him. His mother Meg offered him 500K to marry Betsy which he accepted without disclosing he was already married to Arlene - the 500K in 1974 was probably like $10 million in 2022.
My Mom used to watch Love of Life. Brings back memories. R.I.P. Mom. I would watch Captain Kangaroo then Love of Life with my mom. I was only 4 when I started watching it.
This was when the Price is Right stayed on a half an hour, and The Love of Life came on after it. And if I remember correctly, The Price is Right came on after The Edge Of Night.
Before Y&R, Announcer says: This is the CBS MIDDAY NEWS WITH DOUGLAS EDWARDS. The news would last 5 minutes, and there would be a commercial break in the middle. The Price is Right is still an hour long show; you’ll have to wait for your local news instead. Kenneth A Huang 10/28/22.
Should have kept this and the Secret Storm going for decades longer, and never produced the more "modern" serials like Young and Restless, Somerset, Bold and Beautiful, etc.
The best theme track from Love of Life was from 1967-1973(?). Just my opinion. This theme track was delightfully similar to the theme track from The Secret Storm from around that same time.
This is Love of Life ................................ this is Ken Roberts inviting you to join us tomorrow and each Monday through Friday for Love of Life .................. now stay tuned for The Young and the Restless next over most of these CBS stations .......................... this program was pre-recorded
Christopher Reeve portrayed a villainous character on this series for a couple of years. I remember him telling Johnnie Carson or David Letterman that he played the person so convincingly that a female fan slugged him in public.
He played bigamist Ben "Beano" Harper, son of Meg Dale Lattimer who married Betsy Crawford and Arlene Lovett who ended up being marrried to Ray Slater.
Arlene's mother Carrie Johnson Lovett was Ben's mother Meg's housekeeper and Carrie was close friends with Betsy - and Betsy's brother Tom was a surgeon that took care of Carrie.
That was the straw that broke the camel's back regarding LOL! CBS moved the show to 4PM under the pretext of saving it which IMO was BS. Many areas like yours outright dropped LOL altogether then. Others (e.g. WCAU channel 10 - the then CBS affiliate for the Philly area and flagship WCBS channel 2 in NYC still aired it at noon EST until the very end, even though it might have been on a one day delay). Then after all that, CBS in early January 1980 cancelled LOL with 2/1/1980 being the final broadcast date, giving the cast & crew less than a month's notice to frantically update resumes, contact agents, etc. As long time director Larry Auerbach pointed out, a 4PM time would be more suitable for cartoons, reruns and game shows - fare more likely to attract children coming home from school. Another rumored reason for the sudden cancellation was to enable CBS to accommodate the Winter Olympics.
ruclips.net/video/8bkqLRz-UQI/видео.html Here's a link to the final episode which was broadcast on 2/1/1980. At the end of the episode Walter Cronkite leads on the CBS Evening News a eulogy of LOL. This episode - and several others of the final episodes - were kindly posted by Chandler Hill Harben - the final Ben Harper on LOL.
I'm watching because Our Lady of Angels severely burned fire victim Michele McBride said in her book it was a favorite show. She died in 2001 before 9/11. I try to read a book.on a historical fire around their anniversary so we don't get overconfident and forget.
@RabbitEarsRedux Upon further watching (and listening), it is obvious this is Ken Roberts' actual voice-over, and the original audio, that you have merely re-created the visuals. Great job! I wish you would try to do some of these for a classic open & close of "Search For Tomorrow" (using Dwight Wiest's voice-over, if you may find it), a color one is fine, anywhere from 1967-81; and also one for "The Secret Storm" from the 1968-74 era, also with Ken Roberts' v.o.
There are plenty of "Search For Tomorrow" kinescopes and videotapes, at leats of the open & close sequences. But have you considered doing one of that soap (circa 1974-75), just for fun?
@RabbitEarsRedux By the way, "RabbitEarsRedux" (Are yu a John Updike fan, too?), did you know Ken Roberts' very last role was as an extra, a bartender in "Brokeback Mountain?" Roberts had a great voice, very enunciative, and very soothing. And Roberts' son, Tony, acted on a few soaps (I forget which ones now?), is best known for being one of Woody Allen's ensemble.
This looks absolutely beautiful. However, I know that Rosehill was the name of the location, but what exactly was that book that was featured in this opening? A journal of some sort? Just curious.
wlbaz The Love of Life opening credits included the book. I'm not sure if the book holds any significant meaning, but since that's how the original credits from the '70s were produced, this clip retains all the elements of the original titles.
@carmen vitale yeah that’s why it survived until 2009 lmao That’s why I surpassed every other show besides B&B, Y&R on CBS. It’s not like CBS was/is the most picky network there is
@carmen vitale that’s not quiet true. And it wasn’t really CBS that wanted GL gone in 2009… P&G wanted out of the soap opera business and that’s why Atwt was gone 1 year later
Vanessa and Bruce....oh, how I wish we could see all of those old episodes of the soaps.. The.Edge of Night, As The World Turns, The Guiding Light....I remember when that was on radio before it was televised!!!...Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow
Good job with this--and I like it that you used what sounds like Ken Roberts' actual voice-over, and original theme music, too. Is the photo of the flowers in a window sill an actual restoration of the original open & close title/credits image? Or did you use a very similar photo and add your own titles/credits in the same font? In fact, the only thing that has any re-created appearance to this, to my eyes, is the CBS Eye logo.
I remember my grandmother and all of my friends mothers tuning into this at 11:00 A.M.. I was a very young child then.
It was 32 years ago yesterday that this underrated soap was cancelled. Thank you to RabbitEarsRedux for this. Lovely, just lovely, too lovely!!
Underrated? It was a top tier soap back in the day lmao
This was the best musical theme that LOVE OF LIFE ever had! I love the way it ends on a powerful high note at the conclusion!
When you hear this theme you just just think of simpler times .Three. channels and tv that ended at midnight.Good ole days
Yes you do
A warm and wonderful part of our history couldn't have been captured more lovingly. We should all be grateful for your hard work.

Something about that song and the voice of Ken Roberts combined gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. As beautiful as it is
Wow, how I remember these soaps
A wonderful theme song (and logo) for "Love of Life"! Great announcing by Ken Roberts too.
I could have listened to Kentucky Roberts voice all day - what a soothing voice he had - like velvet
@RabbitEarsRedux Great job. Thanks for keeping the memory of this once great genre alive.
Wonderful job. My favorite soap opera theme...
My Mom used to watch Love of Life. Brings back memories. R.I.P. Mom. I would watch Captain Kangaroo then Love of Life with my mom. I was only 4 when I started watching it.
I was two years old when this show went off the air. Would love it if CBS would add the extant episodes to their streaming service.
This was when the Price is Right stayed on a half an hour, and The Love of Life came on after it. And if I remember correctly, The Price is Right came on after The Edge Of Night.
I watched this with my grandmother.
Great theme song!
Remember the 1972 storyline.
I had a crush on Cindy Grover who played Stacy Corby.
Makes me smile.
brilliant work. You are creating an time capsule for us all (something the networks neglected)
Part 2 of "Love of Life" has been presented by Anacin!
Ken Roberts had the golden voice - !!!!!! Wow
He did have the voice
That is one beautiful song! Yet very eerie!

Rest in peace, Chris Reeve.
THANK YOU
Very nice i was little back then , but i remember this when my Aunt and Sister always watched it
Should have kept this and the Secret Storm going for decades longer, and never produced the more "modern" serials like Young and Restless, Somerset, Bold and Beautiful, etc.
Somerset was NBC, not CBS.
Plus Somerset was cancelled late 1976, early 1977. However, I agree they should have kept LOL much longer and still kept ATWT on.
But the early years of Y&R were fantastic and especially Brenda as Jill ! No way
should have kept The Edge of Night on also one of my favorite soaps of all time ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Christopher Reeve was on this before Superman
I love this so much you are so talented!
Superman (Christopher Reeve) was on this!
The best theme track from Love of Life was from 1967-1973(?). Just my opinion. This theme track was delightfully similar to the theme track from The Secret Storm from around that same time.

Loved it😊 puts a smile on my face
I would call it soothing
Christopher Reeve portrayed a villainous character on this series for a couple of years. I remember him telling Johnnie Carson or David Letterman that he played the person so convincingly that a female fan slugged him in public.
Stephen Joiner she slugged Superman

My mother used to watch this years ago up until CBS moved it to 4 pm channel 2 dropped it here in Detroit in April 1979

In the future, after 6 years of hiatus, we can do a recreated opening and closing to NBC's game show "Jackpot" and that of CBS' game show "Gambit".
I'm watching because Our Lady of Angels severely burned fire victim Michele McBride said in her book it was a favorite show. She died in 2001 before 9/11.
I try to read a book.on a historical fire around their anniversary so we don't get overconfident and forget.
Nice job.
Here in Durham,NC it came on at 11:30am on Cbs.

Much better than young and restless or guiding light
Ok that’s a stretch. GL was great during the 50‘s throughout 70‘s
@carmen vitale yeah that’s why it survived until 2009 lmao That’s why I surpassed every other show besides B&B, Y&R on CBS. It’s not like CBS was/is the most picky network there is

No Guiding Light was a great soap as well as Young and Restless ❤❤❤❤❤❤
@RabbitEarsRedux
I would like to know if you take requests.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ken Roberts - sorry
Why did Ron Tomme get top billing over Audrey Peters?
Vanessa and Bruce....oh, how I wish we could see all of those old episodes of the soaps.. The.Edge of Night, As The World Turns, The Guiding Light....I remember when that was on radio before it was televised!!!...Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow
Probably because he was on it before her;Vanessa was an original character, but Ms Peters was the third actress to play her😊

For the love of life.....there's a trade off.....
