- Mikhail Gorbachev, the last premier of the Soviet Union, has died aged 91.
As leader of the USSR he oversaw a period of liberalisation throughout the Soviet Union and a relaxation of East-West tensions, culminating in the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Here is a report from his visit to the UK in April 1989. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh received the Soviet premier and his wife, Raisa Gorbachev, at Windsor Castle, and over lunch Gorbachev invited his hosts to Moscow. The Queen accepted his invitation happily.

Its insane how Queen Elizabeth II met world leaders from different Eras. From Winston Churchill and Emperor Hirohito to John F Kennedy and Nixon. From Reagan and Gorbachev to finally the 21st century leaders like Obama.

History is sadly dying. We have to appreciate the important people in history still alive like our ww2 vets and leaders. RIP to both of them

Saddened by the death of two leaders who represented the people.
With an interval of several days, the world lost Gorbachev and Queen Elizabeth. Two completely different people have done a lot for the peoples of their countries and the whole world. I will remember them with sadness and gratitude.

Gorbachev's death is sadder than the Queen's in my opinion. Because of Gorbachev the West won the Cold War: he wanted peace.
I understand what you mean. His death made a bigger impact on me because of how he treated in ex sovjet country's. Atleast elisabeth got the funeral she deserves.
