A year ago I was backpacking solo through south america. my first stop was costa rica and i remember playing this on repeat in the shuttle through the jungle making my way to the pacific coast. OMG so good
This is the first DR tune I ever heard, many moons ago, from a compilation CD I literally found on the street. Been a big fan ever since. Wish he would come to Texas.
I Friggin love this guy... Saw him in 1991 opening up for Manteca in Toronto. I was amazed. I bought his CD, but I had no CD player yet...LOL. Well, i bought one and the rest shall we say, is history.
I first heard this song when Don Ross was playing it live at the Home County Folk Festival in London, ON many years ago. It made my jaw drop and made me a life long fan.
I had this on cassette in the early 90s, on the Bearing Straight album. I haven't heard it in twenty years, easily, and right now I am overcome with shivers and great memories. What a gorgeous song.
I just found this and all I can picture is cruising through the countryside in a old Beaumont (I believe was a Canadian Chevrolet Impala or Chevelle) with the windows down, love of my life in the passenger seat and this playing over the radio as we cruise along enjoying the sights
Don recorded this before ppl like Andy McKee (but long after Michael Hedges R.I.P.). He is a true pioneer of acoustic guitar and I for one am thankful for him introducing the world to his own freakishly good style .. I've met him numerous times and he never fails being a true guitar god. Thanks Don!
Just to put it in historical perspective...this is a very early tune of mine. I wrote it in 1983, about a year before I had heard of Michael Hedges. In 1986, I slipped a cassette that had a performance of this tune on it to Michaels' sound man at a gig in Toronto, and then about a year later Michael came back, saw me waiting to talk to him after the show, and walked right up to me (there were about 20 people ahead of me) and said..."Are you Don?" I kinda quaked in my boots and nodded. "You wrote that 6/8 tune...da-duh-la, dee-dah-la..." "First Ride," I replied. "YEAH! First Ride! What a great tune." I had puppies on the spot. :-)
Big Larry ...this song is from his debut album Bearing Strait released in 89 so Michael was still very much alive, it was November of 97 or 98 when the most unfortunate happened!!
I first heard this on the car radio back in the 80’s. As soon as I got home I called the radio station to find out the name of the song and the artist. I’ve been a Don Ross fan ever since..
Don Ross was one of the first finger stylist guitarist I ever heard, along with Pat Kirtley and Laurence Juber. I was dumbfounded by what he and others did. The first song I heard was Afraid to Dance, then That'll be the Phone and then First Ride. OMG - I was hooked!
one of my absolute favorite tunes from one of the very best.. watch this kids.. how finger style is really done. Don Ross the master.. wow.. so awesome!!! Thanks Don!!!
The same way I love Stevie Ray Vaughan for being my gateway drug to Hendrix, I am grateful to Don Ross for my introduction to what an acoustic instrument is capable of.
used to play this(Passion Session version), but then i got a older... i miss having the ability to play songs like klimbim and berkley springs. as a teen i liked to "show off" me playing klimbim :p
Don Ross is CRIMINALLY underrated. Pride of Canada.
As a Canadian who has listened to him for ages. I had no idea he was Canadian. Totally proud of him.
I can listen to Don all day long. Truly one of Candyrat's best.
Remember seeing him at Ontario Place. Five of us. Played the hell out of that acoustic.
Bearing Straight is an amazing album.
Get it and be happy!

It's been almost 3 years since I've heard this song for the first time and I'm still in love with it, Don Ross is amazing!

I love Don Ross, one of the great innovators in finger style guitar playing. Great composition, melody, technique, and rhythm.
His positivity is infectious. I find myself with a huge grin during watching this vid. You rock GobyFish
this will always improve my mood and outlook on life
also this is so weirdly 05 metalcore.
Can't wipe the smile off of my face!
ridiculously awesome but what else could come from this guy?? amazing!!

Big Larry not after Hedges I think long before he passed. Hedges died in what 98 and I'm guessing this came out in the 80's??

he looks like a happy dad jamming in his living room. LOVE IT :D
love this song. have often thought of it while biking or walking the trails of Toronto
The words "Passion Session" perfectly describe this video. Breathtaking.

You just gotta love the little nuances that makes this song flow so well.
I mean the big nuances are lovely too
one of my absolute favorite tunes from one of the very best.. watch this kids.. how finger style is really done. Don Ross the master.. wow.. so awesome!!! Thanks Don!!!
TE is the master...srsly
Wow! I remember this song from the Narada days, almost 20 years ago. Outstanding! So good to hear songs that never cease to be fresh.
Awsome rythm !
The duo with Calum Graham is also very nice, your two rythms answer each over and the way of playing is so fast !
Thanks Don..
What a fun song! In some ways, it seems "fun" is more difficult to achieve than "beautiful" in instrumental fingerstyle.
Doesn’t get any better. Wow. What a piece of music and what a guitar player!!
I was thrilled when I heard this in Disney's California Adventure park. Great tune.
Don Ross rocks!
In my opinion, one of the top 5 fingerstyle guitar songs of all time and it is easily #1
Don ross you're incredible !

Still one of my favorites of Don's tunes; heard Don play it first at Winfield in the late 1980's.
