We can't claim Mel as an Aussie, he moved here when he was 12 so he was already at that stage an American, Mel had to fake his Australian accent to fit in, he used to get bullied at school so he changed his accent, even in Mad Max which was filmed in 1978 you can still hear bits of his American accent, so no, we can't claim him as ours.

He’s been sober for over twenty years and my beautiful loving brother has been restored to me. Having suffered from several blackouts myself I know how alcohol can hijack your mind and eventually take your soul. So I understand the struggles of Mel Gibson and do not judge him for his bad behavior, but appreciate his incredible genius and all to human battles with rage alcohol and sobriety

“I don’t have to work very hard” I don’t think he’s joking when he says this. Makes me like him more that he just admits it. There’s so many actors who make it sound like acting is a very demanding job. A normal blockbuster movie will require like 8 weeks of “work” from the lead actor. And depending on the type of role, they might not even be shooting every day. But they’ll make millions of dollars from their “work”, which is literally just showing up to set, dressing up, standing around waiting for the shot to get set-up and then saying your lines. There’s nothing “hard” about that line of work, it’s all about your talent and whether you sound cool when you read your lines. Are you naturally convincing? Any actor who pretends like it’s hard to “act” for 8 weeks and make 5 million dollars is a giant L.

I've never felt alienated by anything he did. In fact, much of what he's known 'notoriously' for just makes him that much more endearing.
To be clear, I'm not endorsing everything (don't drink and drive, kids), but seeing him go through a rough spell like that kinda helped me in way.
He's actually one of those celebs that I don't really know of that much through what they're most known for, as I really haven't seen that many of his films. I really know of him from interviews, and reading about him and his father. Interesting people. David Cole is said to be producing a documentary about his father that will include an interview he said Cole could release after he died...which was this past May, if I recall correctly.
