Hello Gary, I'm having an issue I can't figure out. I don't know why some of my seedlings are starting off good then look wilted and stunted, growing slowly. The color looks good, the nutrients and watering is normal, and the sunlight is sufficient. Also, I hand pollenated my squash but the fruit grows a little then gets soft and just slows down growing so I picked it off. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does someone know a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Gideon Judah I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.

This is so exciting , two of my favorite garden teachers. I've learned hands down more from you gary than any other person. And charles, well charles is a magical man! You are both so brilliant and I'm excited to see how his method works here in our climates. Thank you so much gary for every video you put out

Planting artichoke in a new no dig this weekend. We saved bags of shredded mulch and cardboard for almost two years. Thank you for shouting out Charles Dowding, I actually get really upset when people don’t. I did potato boxes for the first time this year on mid and late season potatoes and no dig my earlies. Compost, compost, compost...yes, that’s the downside for sure on no dig. We have mulch walking paths that we sift through every spring and get a LOT of good compost from it and just add more mulch to the larger pieces and put it back on the path. Charles says no glossy boxes as well and I agree with you guys on that. Great info as usual 👍🏼
I have some artichokes I grew from seed. Ill drop one in. He has so much good info, he deserves a look. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
i get upset when people don't reference Ruth Stout, who was the true pioneer of no dig, and it irks me when men try to erase her from the history of no dig and permaculture.
Wendy’s garden- it’s true Ruth Stout was a pioneer in this method. Problem today is that it’s a video world not a book reading world. Had she been making videos she’d probably be a front runner. With that said, I’ve watched quite a few videos who do actually mention her and this method. I watched one made about her. I’ve heard Charles Dowding mention her a few times in his videos. He points this out before explaining his role for the last 30+ years of gardening. He started out traditional then read some of her info I believe and went from there. He does more experimental projects testing dig versus no dig beds and the yields he gets from them. It just happened that a guy picked up on her method and is now running with it for the better I should add. Actually the people I do hear mention Ruth Stout have all been men. So they are paying it forward. Just thought you’d like to know that.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I ended up with a heck of a lot of artichokes because I was impatient and started more when they hadn’t germinated... I believe I had %100 germination 😋
Wendy's Garden I understand where you’re coming from and I believe ( as Jim mentioned ) that it is because of video v books. Charles of course gives her the credit due so people will still know about her as they research because his name will also most certainly come up. He has also expanded upon her methods and I think that also plays a part.
I am so excited to see this and follow along! I put in 4 No-Dig beds this year and am liking it so far! I, too, have many different kinds of gardening going on at once because I enjoy it! I’m so grateful for the work you put into your videos, your honesty, and your humor! And great Amazon lists! I shop from them! New subscriber here! Can’t wait to see more No-Dig! It’s fascinating!

Good ideas Mr. Gary. My local appliance store let me have a couple huge refrigerator boxes. I'm going to try this for beans ,cucumbers and other plants. My local nursery sells compost that is from last years 4 -H fair. I'll use grass clippings on top. I was told you can cut a hole into cardboard to set plants into. Happy gardening.
You can cut a hole but roots can also grow into the cardboard. Good luck Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

Hi Gary, another great video. Just so everyone is clear on this. Raised beds are also no digs as you said as long as your not turning them. No dig is the process of continually adding from the top. A fresh layer of Compost is added once or twice a year to the top of the bed (raised or ground level) to feed the bed and keep weed seed from being turned up from below. In addition, by not disturbing the soil it allows the mycorrhizal network to stay intact. Turning the soil constantly breaks up this beneficial network. It also requires less work, tools and fertilizers if using good compost. Have a great growing season everyone. Good luck.
Thanks. Very clear. Going to stress the reduction of ferts as cost saver. And of course making compost makes it free. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Great vid. Here in PHX I tried that with cardboard and the bramuda grows up through it and the 18" deep raised bed! This stuff is the most terrible weed I can think of. It's grown here as lawn because it can handle the heat. Once planted, It will NEVER go away. Your garden looks very very good BTW. I wish we had all that rain! We will probably not get rain till Oct. It's already 106 degrees here hahaha
Bennie Lamb I recently watched something that says bermuda is a runner kind of grass so he used a 5” border along the edge of his bed. I think it’s called terrace border or something like that. He swears by it. I have bermuda too.
That is one tough grass. I am familiar with it. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

I’m just getting started using this method... been collecting cardboard ... Costco is a good location to get pallet sized flat pieces of cardboard ... usually corrugated, but thin... probly need to do three layers, but it’s easier to deal with and pretty plentiful at Costco... I check the box bins and then go around collecting it out on the retail floor... they got in the regular carts too... looking forward to following your progression!
Great tips. And many layers is okay. Once wet it keep underside leaf growth down but roots go into it easily. And it breaks down fast. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) will definitely be checking out your seeds Gary ... and there was a typo... was saying the cardboard pieces fit nicely in the regular carts too

Thank you for all your videos Gary. I am filling my raised beds this week (9", so taller) and I want to use the non dig method. I can see that here you did not use any soil, just compost and shredded hard wood. Would that be sufficient to grow other veggies than lettuce and potatoes? I am planning on radishes/carrots, tomatoes/cucumbers/etc. Should I mix in some potting soil and/or peat moss to the compost mix at the bottom before covering up with shredded wood? Also what type of shredded wood did you use? Thank you in advance!

Great video. I am going to try this method in November to transplant my blueberries and raspberries in the spring. Do you have a method you use in the off-season to keep the weeds out, like smother the area it with another layer of cardbord and manure/soil or smother with a cover crop?
I often mulch it well and have used cardboard. I dont use cover crops. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD

Gary, I have been container gardening and would love to do the no dig garden BUT we are going to have to have the termite tx done within this next year and am terrified it will leach into my garden. We are on a 1/3 acre so no way to do this far away from the house. Have you even read or seen anything about this being a problem?

Lori's Stories you can definitely use that leaf mold. It’s all broken down and full of life. Perfect for this application. I’ve been watching Charles Dowding for years and I follow a no dig method. Less backbreaking work and far less weeding. I WISH I had a Forrest to draw from. You are so lucky. Check out Deep South homestead- leaf mold living off the land. This stuff is great for your compost pile as well. It gets it cooking.

Hi Gary I check the OMRI.org site, they give details about organic use of cardboard in gardens, this site is an excellent reference. Great video. God bless.
Sounds like the mic didn’t suffer any damage. Bury it in a bowl of rice to dry out for 12+ hrs. The rice will suck the moisture out. You may have already done this. Great vid, and thank you. I’m about to add another veg garden and have been putting off the dig.
Hello Gary thank you for all your help from V I love your Channel. I have a question I live in Georgia we have Sandy dirt with a lot of rocks in it and I'm trying to find the best way for me to start a garden I'm very new to this I've already started my seedlings and everything is ready to go in the garden I'm using pots but I also want to put some things in the ground how do I go about this can I do the nodig and not have to worry about all the rocks that's more like sand in my ground?
Rocks below the roots will work around them. No dig is a good way and each year you add and raise the level of compost. I would do a bad like that. You can also do 8-10 inch sided raised beds. Fill that with good stuff. The plants will grow will in that. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

Many thanks for the new lesson! Could you please tell me if it can be productive to set up a no dig garden on top of concrete after putting the cardboard? I have a paved backyard only. This is my third year planting in containers but I like the idea of a raised bed. Thanks again for your kind help!
Nope. You need it to grow into earth. You best but would be making 24 inch sided raised beds. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Mio Angel check out Huw Richards utube channel. He put raised beds over concrete and put in compost about 24" deep. He is in Wales and converted their concrete barnyard into a very productive raised bed garden plots. He gardens year around using his poly tunnel in winter. Garden on! God bless
Mio Angel watch Charles Dowding- “”small garden (1),varied growing and regular harvesting from 3 beds. His property was an old farm or nursery and there’s an area of ground that has an old foundation under it. He actually takes a steel bar and taps it in the video about 1:52. He simply grows above it producing an abundance of crops rotating out through the year
I should appreciate for your kind sharing experiences regarding " setting up no dig growing area" and those people can feel this useful information when they face the weeding ground at the time to start growing veg. and that's really headache
I hope it helps. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
I live right next to a bunch of pine trees. Can I use the pine straw on the bottom in a large container to fill up that space before I put dirt in? Also, can I use the dirt underneath as compost for a no dig garden? Thanks for your wealth of information. Your channel is the absolute best to learn from. Take care Gary!
So in a container sure. Dont over do it. In theory you could use the dirt under the tree. You dont want to move weeds seeds and such in. I understand with the decay, its not just dirt but better stuff. Much cheaper to get compost delivered by the cubic yard. Just check to make sure it's fully 'cooked' before planting in it. 4' x 8' plot will require about 1 cu yrd 4 " deep or so. Also, Charles Dowding lays a 1" layer of compost over his existing beds in the Fall to provide depth and nutrients for the next growing season, and that's all he does...so annual maintenance is much cheaper.
That is true. Fully cooked is key. Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs at www.therustedgarden.com & Please Ring the Bell (next to subscribe) to get immediate real-time video notifications. Thanks
Hii gary... Lots of love from india... Could this technique b followed in india... I have one querry... After placing cardboard and compost how long we need to wait to plant the saplings... ??? Plz reply
You can. I started with the traditional great compost. Great manure is good too. Mixing either with potting soil can work too. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

Can this technique/process be used in an area of the garden that has been largely abandoned for a decade and has large shoots and various bushes and shrubs sticking out that have just all been cut down with hedge cutter/chain saw?
The compost will feed the plants. So yes. You can cover the old roots. Vegetable roots will work around it and soil life with loosen the old soil. The top 4-6 inches of compost will support the plants. In the past I have used colorful glossy cardboard as a mat under my Earth Machine compost bins, thinking the gloss would extend the life of the cardboard. I have noticed that in most cases, after a season under the bin, the colorful gloss simply disintegrates and disappears. Rarely, there is a plastic film or some leftover packing tape on the cardboard, which is easy to separate and discard once the cardboard degrades. Having observed this, I now use an office paper shredder to shred all my colorful glossy metallic plasticized household cardboard - toothpaste boxes, cereal boxes, bill envelopes with plastic windows, waxy bags from the pizza takeout - almost all of my household paper waste is shredded with impunity. In a sealed municipal green bin, I mix high-nitrogen kitchen waste with the high-carbon paper shreds and allow them to anerobically degrade into a sludge. Later I mix the sludge with accumulated yard waste and grind very finely under the lawnmower. Finally this supercharged mulch goes into the Earth Machine for fast hot aerobic composting. The finished compost has almost no recognizable paper, and only a few shreds of plastic envelope-window in various states of mechanical degredation. I don't bother to pick them out, trusting they will pulverize to dust eventually, and add loft to the soil in the meantime.
Thanks. Appreciate the long comment. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

Hi Gary , I have 4 in ground bed. I have been struggling with weeds and grass in my garden for years. They always over take the garden. Do you think it good idea to cover with cardboard. I over turn the ground every year but still the grass keep on coming. What can I do.
So when you turn. You bring up deep seeds. They can last for years and bits of root remain. So that is why they keep coming. I layered cardboard in most of my beds when I started. So you can do that now too. Sort of build what you see in this vid on your beds. And try 2 layers of cardboard. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Rose Famiyeh this is one of the major reasons for no dig gardening. Your no longer turning up the dormant weed seeds as Gary said. My beds used to be covered in weeds. If your current beds are full of weeds, do just what Gary did in this video on top of the current beds and start growing right into the top soil above the cardboard. The cardboard will breakdown shortly and the plant roots will continue down into your beds. You’ll be growing your plants while the cardboard is suppressing the weeds. If your beds are really bad and dormant over winter you can cover them with more cardboard, heavy black plastic ( which will heat up and kill the weeds), old carpeting or tarp. Matter of fact, other than the carpeting, you can simply cut holes in the other materials and put your plants right in for fall/winter plantings.
$5.20. I finished this bed. I was 22 bags. About $120 using bags which is the most costly. Keep in mind I dont need any fertilizers in theory. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
That’s what I got from my garden center basically fine and medium bark they call ‘garden soil’ I mixed that and compost in my no dig 4x10 beds and it was FAR too heavy for my plants and began to suffocate roots so I wound up having to sacrifice all my pole beans and start over but I was able to save my tomatoes and peppers and herbs by gently digging around each as far down as I could and I added in raised bed soil (which is much lighter and contains peat and some perlite, I used Kellogg’s). The plus side is I will never make that mistake again lol 😂
I would use black plastic.cardboard doesn't kill field bind weed. Will find out if it gets hot enough under black plastic to kill this weed with a 20+ foot root system
Depending on your weeds it it good strategy. Black plastic first works for reason you stated. It takes time and you have to wait. I will be planting this weekend, Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
mary CBS news jane even Charles Dowding still deals with bind weed. However, as long as you stay on top of it you can keep it at bay he says. He explains if you keep pulling at weeds they eventually give up. Bind weed however may just move on to another location. I have it all throughout my yard and I just keep snapping it off when I see it. I used to just let it grow which was a bad idea. However it’s no longer near my beds following the above process.

As soon as cardboard is wet, roots can work their way into it. And it several weeks of being wet, soil life breaks it down. So it kills weeds and then the garden breaks it down. I do these types of beds often, usually if I plant transplants into them right away I take my trowel and kind of stab a little slit in the cardboard just to help it along. It might cause a slight problem with weed intrusion but it’s minimal in my experience. If I wait just a couple of days letting the cardboard, compost and wood chips sit in a damp environment there is no need to do that.

Hello Gary, I have watched several of your videos now and do learn from you. I live across the river in PWC Virginia so our areas are pretty close to the same. If I could recommend two things to help: 1. Please use a tripod to hold you camera and use a microphone on your shirt. This will decrease the excess movement from holding by hand and keep your voice consistent. 2. You jump around too much for me causing me to lose my place in your story. Editing is important of course, just try to stay on one point at a time. Thanks for your advise and showing us your methods for growing.

He has so much good info, he deserves a look.

i get upset when people don't reference Ruth Stout, who was the true pioneer of no dig, and it irks me when men try to erase her from the history of no dig and permaculture.

Not really.sound bad

Field bind weed (aka morning glory) is worse. I got rid of Bermuda grass easily. Field bind weed? I've been fighting for 25 yrs

Nice tip very educational.

Sometimes I’ll use paper leaf bags under my cardboard just to make sure the grass is completely covered.

You should show your compost that you're trying to do we just saw quick glimpse
Sounds like the mic didn’t suffer any damage. Bury it in a bowl of rice to dry out for 12+ hrs. The rice will suck the moisture out. You may have already done this. Great vid, and thank you. I’m about to add another veg garden and have been putting off the dig.
Hey, what about the following year? You just put a compost on top? When to change the cardboard? I suppose cardboard will be rotten
So if you by the double shredded hard wood in the bag do you have to let it sit for six months before to can plant in it?

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) Thank you for answering my questions. I wish you were my neighbor. I hope you and your family have a great weekend.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) Also, since I started watching you I’ve been collecting cardboard for a raised bed. Thanks for the wonderful tips.

Does shredded hardwood need to be composted before being used in the garden?
Not as mulch. Only if you wanted to grow in it. On the surface it is fine around transplants or older sprouted plants.

How do you keep soil from getting washed away in heavy rains?
A flat surface does the trick to be honest. We get heavy rains here and no issue so far

Hi there can we use garden vegetables mix
You can. However, it isn't compost so it may not have a lot of fertilizer value in it.

I have access to free mulch that's not fully broken down and I know you mentioned you can leave it on your property for a few months do I need to add anything to it or just leave alone?
You dont have to add anything but you can pour on some fish emulsion. That adds nitrogen and speeds up the process. Maybe a small pile.

How long would I need to wait before I tried to grow any sort of melons in this bed?
With compost, pretty much right away. Transplants any time. Seeds, maybe wait 3-4 weeks to set up. Depends on quality of compost you use.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you! I've been sitting down watching your videos and taking notes!!! I appreciate you.
How did the LeafGro work out in the end? Did you amend it? On its own, it seems to drain a little too fast for me.
One of the best new gardens ever. It dries fast but the cardboard and earth below held water for the roots. No amendments. Looking back I think I could have thrown in some peat and basic earth. But it worked well. Ill be revisiting it. My fence with string and bells kept deer away. Ill be growing more in it.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Good to hear! Lots of LeafGro here in Baltimore County, so I'll give it a shot this year, with the peat. Thank you for your videos, they're super informative and especially relevant because of my location.

Pardon . Do worm castings have worm eggs into it ? I mean if you put some worm castings in our soil will we end up with some worms in our soil?
They dont usually if they are aged but if you are get casting that arent aged and fresh with bedding compost, probably.

Tova Nicole Archa Israel anything you want. Even carrot and parsnips. Go watch Charles Dowding. He explains it all.

Jims Garden thanks 🙏

How much does one bag of the leaf grow weigh? (compost)
$5.20. I finished this bed. I was 22 bags. About $120 using bags which is the most costly. Keep in mind I dont need any fertilizers in theory.

I will be planting this weekend,

mary CBS news jane even Charles Dowding still deals with bind weed.
Hey Gary, just found your yt channel about a week ago. 💕 In one video you had an ant or bee infestation beginning but you didn’t show how to address the problem. Please, if you’ve addressed this issue in a previous video direct me to it or if possible can you advise on how to rid a garden of ants? Thanks, love your channel! 🌱
Still working on ants. I have a video on borax. That helps with some ants.

where can the roots grow if there is cardboard, especially in the first year, I will still believe in the second

If I wait just a couple of days letting the cardboard, compost and wood chips sit in a damp environment there is no need to do that.
just got 16 yards today:)
Nice. Enjoy building
