Sucks that we didn't know how to deal with overdoses of opiates back then as we do now.

@SethEnslow-e8k oh yeah, and it sucks so bad if you are addicted to them. I don't think anyone who doesn't have an addiction would go into precipitated withdrawal though
@SethEnslow-e8k I'm talking about Buprenorphine by the way, not Naloxone. Buprenorphine does a better job at ripping other opiates off better than Naloxone. It isn't a very strong opioid, maybe half that of hydrocodone or even codeine, but it's affinity is so high that it just rips everything else off regardless of how potent the others are.
My childhood favourite movie (lol) was Hitman (2007) with Timothy Olyphant. There was a scene depicting this event pretty accurately. Never realized back then that those people just fucking died.
At the time we all ignored the reason this shit happened. Russia was doing the same shit in Chechnya as they are now doing in Ukraine. But we were ok with that war because they were 'islamist terrorists' so chechnya got no support in any way and they resorted to shit like this. With hindsight , Russia reaped what they sowed and learned nothing. (and neither did we in the west)
Although you are right that Chechnya didn't get support and the war was broadly ignored in the West: 1/ it doesn't mean we shouldn't support Ukraine 2/ the context was very different back then and Russia was not seen as a threat, it is today for very good reasons 3/ it was a war to break away from Russia, Ukraine is a sovereign nation under attack. In other words, the comparison is quite stupid.
I don't think at first the government was willing to work with the medical providers to tell them that it was opiate based gas and even if they did it's very unlikely that Russia has narcan in their hospitals even though it's been around for a long time now I don't know if it would be approved or used there commonly
