  • In the mid to late-80s, a few U.S. game shows were being produced in Vancouver, Canada. Wink Martindale & Merrill Heatter (producer of the original Hollywood Squares with Bob Quigley) teamed up to create such a game show called The Last Word. As with Hollywood Squares, this one also had celebrities but teaming up with civilian players.

I read that the Fox stations scheduled this as part of a block including "Talk About" and "Jackpot".

This was Wink's Last Game Show for Merrill Heatter
His 1st one was Gambit for CBS Daytime, the Las Vegas Gambit for NBC Daytime, The All New High Rollers for syndication during the 87-88 Season and The Last Word for syndication during the 90/91 Season
Gambit and High Rollers are owned by MGM Television and The Last Word is owned by Turner Broadcasting and Warner Bros. Television if I'm not mistaken

9/18/1989 US debut for this show. Probably rerun on 12/18/89 as the last three weeks of this show's run in the US(ended on 1/5/1990) were reruns. Wink had a few game shows on the air as a producer and in development around this time(Bumper Stumpers on USA/Global Canada was still in first run then, Second Honeymoon aired on CBN in 1987-88), but Wink didn't have a production credit on this one. THis is from a Canadian airing as the US airings of this show and other Canadian taped, US aired game shows for the most part left off references to being taped in Canada/Vancouver.

I seem to recall hearing they couldn't mention Vancouver. There were lot of contestants came up from Seattle. I attended a few tapings

@@markjones1184 THey tried to cover up for the US airings the fact that the show taped in Canada I would imagine. Bumper Stumpers mentioned a Canada hotel during the end credits, despite it airing in the US on USA Network, ditto Jackpot on Global which aired also on USA Network.

Only the Canadian airings had the contestant plugs and celebrity interviews. I have copies of the video masters of some US-aired episodes and the don't have the Canadian parts.

The theme sounds similar to the Colonial Penn Winners spotlight commercial. Wonder if it is the same theme?

Ironic since the pilot was taped at ABC Television Center in LA. I think they let them borrow their sound effects

Such a weak game. No wonder this did not last.

Plus the fact that you had to deal with two sets of options, with a common link between them (guess or take a letter; guess or pass), and I think that confused a lot of viewers. Why not continue taking letters until making a guess or landing on an exposed letter? That would have ended the confusion.

Kinda weird too how you could win the game with only 1 word even if your opponents got 2 words....albeit the prize wouldn't be as nice.

I've seen worse shows than this but I agree. I think they should have done this instead 1) if you get two of the three words, and you guess the last word you get either a bonus price or $1,000 in cash , if each team gets one word then the third word ends up being the tie breaker
