My mom bought one in 77 off the showroom floor... Still has it... Needs a little TLC but she only has 76k miles on it. She has the 1977 Plymouth Volare Roadrunner 318 in a very rare yellow color with the orange and black stripes... It also has the T-tops on it... Even when searching them online I can barely find a picture of one in that yellow color. It was the family's daily driver until around 1999-2000... I absolutely love that car.

Steve obviously does his great research IN ADVANCE. So, he's full of information, when he makes his videos on location, in real time.
Looking back in hindsight, I think Chrysler would have been better served saving hundreds of millions of dollars creating the Aspen/Volare, and instead modernizing the Dart/Valiant for the late 70s. The differences between the Dart/Valiant and Aspen/Volare were not enough, to justify all the money Chrysler spent. They could have updated the Dart/Valiant with modern styling details, etc. When you look at the Ford Fairmont and Chev Malibu, they made the Aspen/Volare seem obsolete quickly.
Chrysler needed to push the envelope further with new lighter and efficient compacts. The Aspen/Volare used the old big car design formula. In a newer looking luxury package.
A polished, modernized Dart/Valiant would have bridged the gap to the K-Cars. As AMC managed with the Hornet/Concord.

Based upon the grille/parking lights, this Volare Road Runner is either a '76 or '77.
      At 1:45, that's a '76 or '77 grille/parking light design.
The '78 Volares got new grille designs, with a larger egg crate design.

@@mikehewson7057 🤣 That is so true! I lived within walking distance of a smaller scrap yard that allowed me to walk around when I asked for permission (couldn't do that today). I also was only a bike drive away from another larger yard that also allowed us to roam when we asked. They would tell us where we would be safe to go and we respected that so we were allowed back in the next time. They even allowed us to have emblems/nameplates as a souvenir once in a while. When you get the VIN you can win: H for Plymouth Volare, L for low price class, 2 for two door, 9 for special coupe, G for 318 V8 with two barrel, 8 for 1978 model year, B for Hamtramck, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Hamtramck, MI plant was known as "Dodge Main" or "Factory Zero" and operated from 1911 to 1980. GM's Hamtramck, MI assembly is on part of that property now. In 1981 when officials were looking to demolish the old Chrysler plant and take over surrounding land due to eminent domain, there was a group of citizens that barricaded themselves in one of the churches and refused to come out, but eventually did. The area was called "Poletown" due to the high concentration of Polish residents in the area.
With the tag, you can brag: A57 for Roadrunner package sales code, possible M43 for grille trim moldings, E44 for 318 V8 with two barrel, TX9 would be Formal Black exterior paint, and the others are hard to read, but 411 might be 4/11/78 production which was a Tuesday.

wow, great info on the horn...never knew about the differences to make that awesome beep.
I was a lot boy at a Chrysler Plymouth dealer in 1978-79, and we had a couple Volare RR's on the lot...a 360 4barrel auto, and a 360 2barrel 4speed...they made an impression so still remember. these Volare's were actually pretty cushy...nicely trimmed...a 360 in a Volare actually made a pretty nice driving car. Even at the tender age of 17 I knew these were super unusual, and also a little disappointing to me, a serious hotrodder, because at that time the streets were still littered with (well) used original RR's with big blocks

Back in 87 I worked at a restaurant and one of the hostesses had a first year volare road runner, it was orange, had the black stripes, blackout hood treatment, side window slats and ducktail spoiler. It was completely stock except for a set of little red chrome slots. This car was weird, it was a slant six, three speed overdrive on the floor, with bench seat and was all manual with drum front brakes, when I saw the drums on the front it blew my mind that by 75-6 that it wasn't disc. Her oldest brother bought it new and gave it to her for her sixteen birthday, what was funny was she let me take it for a spin around the parking lot and with manual steering it was a pain at that low speed but she being kinda tiny had no problem whipping that car around and shifting that three speed as fast as Ronnie Sox.

My dad bought a Volare Road Runner new in 1977. Red with the red / yellow sticker package. Dont remember if it was a 318 or 360 car. About six months later a dealership mechanic totaled it trying to diagnose a drivability issue.
Car would cold start and drive fine until you got to the first stop, then pulling away it would sputter, misfire and die. Then after a few tries it would start up and drive normally. It was just that transition from cold to operating temp where it had problems. 40+ years later I'm pretty sure it was a choke adjustment issue.
Dad was planning to have a neighborhood shade tree guy remove all the (CA) emissions equipment and put an aftermarket carb / intake on it, maybe headers, after giving the dealership one more chance to fix it. Service mgr kept saying the mechanics couldn't duplicate the problem, until one morning it died when the tech pulled out of the dealership in front of a dump truck.

Chrysler actually did not have the rights for the Warner Brothers roadrunner when it debuted in 1968. That's the reason the roadrunner emblems are black and white in 1968. Once they purchased the rights, the emblems went to the color Warner Brothers style. As I recall, I think they also spent about $50,000 developing that horn. The horns were actually black in 1968 also, then changed color for 1969.

Those road runners/Aspens had really cool interior options that scream 70s.

I had a 68 Charger (and a 73). The horn quit working on the 68 and I got a Road Runner horn from the junk yard and used it for a while.....

I guess the aluminum wire explains why i've never found a working voice of the roadrunner horn over the years in the wrecking yards . Most still had the purple paint and paper voice label but i could never get 1 to Meep . I did have my garage fridge decorated with a spoiled dust stripe and headless bird from my brothers 76 that he upgraded to a 360 with cam and Holley spreadbore before emissions testing started up.

That is sad. I have a friend who owns two '76 Road Runners, both Spitfire Orange, both A66 Super Pak cars, (flares, spoilers) and both 318s. One is nice, the other is a decent project. The one in the video may be a '78, but it has what's left of a '76-'77 grille, a near-impossible grille to find in intact condition.

Great to see you attempting to monetize yourself on the 'tube, all the best in this endeavour. I think you should have added ~20s into explaining the "Super Coupe" a tad more.
Thanks and best wishes on this new channel.

Wait... I vaguely think I thought I remember these now!
So this kind of means in a crazy wacky round about way, I grew up and learned to drive in dad's green/green 77' Plymouth Volare' Slant 6 wagon "RoadRunner"?! We just needed the horn and stripe kit to be cooler!

A kid in Highschool had one of these but my brother had a 1972RR so we thought these stunk back then. Shame that one is sitting like that. Can it be saved I wonder.

Steve, you should have brought a small battery with you to see if it would still work. That would have been super cool! My brother had the Aspen RT. It was a great looking car. Smog dog 360.

This and graveyard cars are my favorites on cable, and Steve has a great wealth of Mopar knowledge in his head. As far as I'm concerned, they stopped making roadrockers after 74 and all American automobiles pretty much sucked at that point..Volare is that example and are fugly..With that being said, I can appreciate what it is considering the times in which we live. My 3rd Mopar was a 70, which was the last year of the better looking body style and don't really care for them much after that.
