  • Hi everyone this is the first video of a series called "Vintage Lenses" where I talk about my collection of old lenses and why I love them.
In this video I want to talk about the Minolta AF 50mm f1.4, a classic lens from the 80s, I hope you enjoy the video and stay tuned for the upcoming one.

Thank you for the wonderful review. I have a Canon 50 mm 1.4 on my Sony Nex. Wanted to upgrade to a Sony A7 and wanted an inexpensive 1.4. I too love soft portraits of my kids and wife with bokeh. You confirmed exactly what I wanted, without having to pay through the nose for expensive modern lenses - as of 12/2022 these are 90 USD on Ebay. Also thx for confirming the right adapter for the full frame from Sony.

the sony a7 is a very good camera, one of the best, I have a a7s2 and paired with this lens can produce very beautiful pictures and videos ... if you also want to use the af capabilities I would suggest to buy the la-ea4 adapter which will give you phase AF, pretty limited for video as your aperture will be locked at f3.5 but very good for stills

@@tanotoscano7579 - again I so appreciate you sharing your wisdom and time. I wanted a very good camera on a budget. I am going with the a7rii, but that doesnt leave me much for lenses. Also wanted an automatic lens since I miss so many kids shots with the manual. with the la-ea4 it will be perfect. Was very nervous cause I thought I can't be the only one pairing the A7 series body with the old a mount lenses, and I found you. Also have a bunch of APC-S lenses, with the 42MP sensor on the rii the crop will still be around 16MP. I don't do video that much and it wouldn't be low light so thats okay with me. I read your a7s2 is really great with low light video. Thanks again.

I just bought one of these. I have one of the older Minolta MD mount 50mm 1.4 Rokkor-X, but it requires an adapter. I think the adapter may effect the focal length so I'm curious how this AF50 will perform vs the older MD. I use a Sony A77. Cheers from Kansas, USA.

Yes, definitely, especially if you get the version 1 ... just be sure to check if the lens has any fungus and if the aperture blades are fine

Hi there. I found your video really interesting. I would like to ask you in case you have any idea… I use the AF lens 50mm like yours (probably I have a newer version) with a DSLR, more specifically with Sony a200.
I want to start using an SLR and believing that 50mm is ideal for the very beginning I thought that I may can use this type of lens.
Buuut I can’t find what kind of electrical analog SLR can I buy to mount with the Minolta 50mm AF lens. Do you have any idea?

I used it on a minolta dynax/maxxum (depending on where you live) and worked great

A Minolta 50mm AF lens on your Sony a200 will be equivalent to 75 mm because of the APS-C sensor size.

Hi Davide. Great video! Quick question: what camera did you use to shoot the test video at the end?
