The Chilling Story of the CIA-Sponsored ‘Jakarta Method’

  • Starting in the 1960s, a US-sponsored campaign of disinformation and violence was used around the world -- with deadly results. It was known as “the Jakarta Method.” The tactic originated in Indonesia, with the help of the CIA. “The Jakarta Method is the intentional mass murder of leftists or people accused of being leftist,” journalist Vincent Bevins told Inside Edition Digital. “It was such a big success that it inspired movements elsewhere around the world, specifically in Latin America.” #InsideEdition

    The propaganda during Suharto era is so bad that people in Indonesia has made the word 'Communist' synonymous with something that completely unrelated like: secularism, irreligiousness, liberalism, and ironically capitalism.
    Some hardcore Islamist literally called the elite ruling class of conglomerate capitalist in Indonesia as "communists" which is a total facepalm.

      @@robertortiz-wilson1588 Wait, do you disagree? I agree with you because the U.S. promoted land-reform in many countries (Japan, Taiwan, many South-American countries believe it or not and South-Vietnam.), permitted independent Trade Unions in countries before any communist country allowed them (The first independent strike action in the soviet union was in 1989 I think. Taiwan also had Trade Unions before the commie Chinese.) and even permitted both the Cuban Revolution (1959) and Sandanista revolution (1979) occur. My criticism is that Edit: "it" was more than a bit schizophrenic, often tied to corporate interests (Not as common as people think.) and suppressed Catholic movements and Churches (It is why I hate Indonesia.).

    • @robertortiz-wilson1588
      @robertortiz-wilson1588 7 месяцев назад

      @johnnotrealname8168 I absolutely agree with you. Very underrated points about land reform that hardly ever get brought up.
      I also acknowledge that corporate interests could sometimes hurt efforts in some areas at times. While they were being used by the US government and asked to make investments in various countries to help them economically.
      I was being overly blunt to the top comment, who, like so many attempt to propagate narratives that the USA as a whole, somehow considered it in their interests and as a matter of policy to deliberately attempt, based on that comment example alone, to destroy foreign "trade unions, nurses, bus drivers, anyone who had democratically voted for something the US didn't want" etc. That's all just false. Delusionally so. Even election interference came about mostly due to geopolitical calculation concerns in relation to the Soviet and Socialist world. Not for corporate economic benefit. That goes for places like Iran as well. If the South Korean, South Vietnamese, etc, leaders were true "puppets" US looks ridiculous considering the difficult time they had attempting to negotiate with them in terms of internal policy decisions that were asked to be carried out.

    I remember being at college studying international relations at the time those CIA documents got declassified. Some days later in a class of National Diplomacy History my lecturer decided to have a class discussion when the lesson touched on the Gestapu (the local name for the Oct 1 '65 incident). The discussion got heated between those who believed PKI was the main culprit and those who believe Soeharto was to blame almost entirely. I politely added that recently the CIA went and declassified some files regarding the Gestapu, in some part admitting their involvement. But the my lecturer just said that it hasn't been proven yet. I instantly lost interest to discuss further seeing my lecturer's pure ignorance.
    What is there to prove anymore when the organization has already published their own documents confirming their involvement?

    • @alst4817
      @alst4817 8 месяцев назад

      Well, I’d say that it’s quite naive to believe the CIA when they say they were the cause of some movement or revolutionary action. Yes, they give money and arms to revolutionary groups and counterinsurgency operations throughout the world, but they have to exaggerate their capabilities and effectiveness to get funding. The KGB and MI6 and Mossad and everyone else have found it basically impossible to foment revolution. The only thing they can do is support groups already engaged in these fights and hope the leaders don’t just steal the arms and money and put it into Swiss bank accounts, which is mostly what happens. Turns out life isn’t a Hollywood movie

    I've always believed it had never been the communist party, sure, they might not be good guys either, but the timeline of this conflict blowing up is soooo 'accidental'. It was Cold War era, Indonesia was one of the NAM founders but actually leaned more to the Eastern Block with its friendship with USSR that was more lax and friendly than USA's. Indonesia had no plan to side with anyone in Cold War, but it couldn't be denied that the West's arrogance alienated Indonesia and USSR's sincere request for friendship (not alliance, friendship) was more in line to Indonesians' taste.
    You want to tell me, a communist party (no matter how arrogant they grew) would stage such cruelties so efficiently??? Soekarno was very friendly with USSR, he got thrown down and the new guy that took over suddenly became VERY close to USA and the West...??? Yeah, get out of here. Due to this matter, Indonesia's budding friendship with USSR back in the days fell in sub-zero, some books would even list USSR as the nation's enemy when they had done nothing wrong to Indonesia, they didn't even stage the coup nor they had any control over the local Communist Party.
    Rather than "supported" by CIA, I very much believe it's endorsed, orchestrated, and staged by CIA who DIDN'T want the four chokeholds of trade routes would favour USSR.
    A newborn country which only ever having ONE president, whom always refused to follow the west's dictation and narrative and even openly spoke against the West's ideals, holding out against USA that had been around for a long time??? Indonesia was just one of many successful marionette mechanism to whittle down USSR's relationships with many countries.

    Indonesia 1965 massacre of the rising left nationalist labour movement under the direction of Sukarno, was completely orchestrated by the Kissinger-J Edgar Hoover policies of the 1960s in America. Kennedy and Sukarno were great friends and allies, but LBJ was a total corrupt politician who was a racist to his bones. Indonesia was like China and Vietnam becoming a major shift to the left in the balance of power in Asia at that time. In 1960s, other than Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, there was no other nation that supported the West. Diosdado Macapagal the leader of Philippines was a leftist and to date, only leftist leader of that nation.

    I have heard about mass graves for the coup that happened in the 60s, it is mostly in Java. But i've never heard about mass graves in Bali beaches, never heard gossips or news about it before. Well, maybe i'm not well informed, maybe bc it wasn't reported in mass media here, or media being reprimanded for that story, or maybe it's just rumour.
    The myth about Indonesia Communist Party (PKI) is really strong here. They're like associated with - idk - satanic cult? Bcs the myth is they not only killed military generals but also ulema. Up until today, Indonesia history in the 60s is really dark. No one can clear it.
    There is negative sentiment towards US (its policies not people actually) in Indonesia. But, the PKI myth is really really strong, particularly for the right wing people (traditionalist, conservativez).
