- So you want to laser on metal? THIS is the laser to do it! You've seen me laser a pizza and use a co2 laser, but you've never seen anything like this! Fiber lasers are MADE to do metal! If you've followed me on social media for a while, you've seen me using this for the last year! This is the @omtechlaser 30w fiber laser. It's incredibly powerful and so quick if you blink, you just might miss it!
This is the first introduction to what a fiber laser is and how it's different from a CO2 laser.
I'll be going it to much more in depth videos on 'how to' for fiber lasers in future videos! Make sure to subscribe to learn everything about fiber lasers!

How does it look on chrome material?
Excellent video. Game changer for me and my machine shop. Who knew!!
Great to hear!
Pretty cool man! This is my first video as an introduction to fiber lasers.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the intro with OMtech. Very cool! Yes more vids please. I do a lot of 3D printing and I could really get into this.
More to come!
Fantastic! Are you able to share any tips on how you managed to do the deep engraving? without leaving the material burnt black? Maybe I am running it too hot. I am using stainless and dont have access to the machine for long so trying to learn as quickly as possible
Great video. Now what size is the smallest fonts can you do?
Don't hold your breath for a reply.... IF the "author" cannot show the courtesy of a reply to a question, he should keep his damn videos to himself.... PERIOD....
Great demo, but is it just me or you don't always wear glasses when operating the laser?
Very quick, neat and elegant job, that's a WoW
Thank you! Cheers!
How deep can you go in metal? Is 0.5-1 mm. possible for brass and copper?
Any plans for the fiber laser tutorials you mentioned in this video?
Great video - now that Lightburn works for fiber lasers - do you have a link for settings for Lightburn for metal engraving like the link you included for Ezcad?
THATS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW AS
What setting do you run?
I've been doing Cerakote, Hydrographics awhile. Wife and I run a custom shop plus FFL custom long gun rifle builds built to order ect. She has a Glowforge for many of the things she does. Looking to branch off and add a fiber laser for etching, engraving, stippling.... curious have you done any work burning a top color of Cerakote off with an image allowing the base coat color to pop up?
Lightburn is now compatible!!
Great video. What program do you use to create and edit your Vector files in? I have a CO2 laser now, but I am looking into getting a Fibre laser, since I’m doing more metal engravings.
Inkscape will work for making vectors (svg) and is free.
Wow, this is a nice channel to follow
Great Vid did you use the standard 175x175mm lens . The reason I ask is I am looking at the exact laser. Would you recommend it? 🙂
It’s a 200x200. Yes it’s great! Use my affiliate link!
Is it true all Fiber Lasers are capable of engraving in different colors, and will you be doing any color engraving videos? Thank you.
So super cool Ben, I appreciate the breakdown
Time for ALL GOOD THINGS to invest in a fiber laser :P
@@MyersWoodshop I'm coming back to this video when I'm ready 🙂
As far as I know, it is the infrared light that is dangerous, the powerful beam coming from the galvo head, not so much the bright light generated when the laser light hits the metal..
Also, the microscopic metal parts blown off the surface might "not smell much", but du you want them in your lungs in any case?
It is an informative video you have made, but I myself, recently having acquired a similar fiber laser (60W), will approach this with a "better safe than sorry" attitude, much different than your IMHO nonchalant "safety" precautions.
Thanks for the clear video, I'm subscribing. Does this or any other fiber laser do 3D imaging on flat surfaces? If not, can you suggest what I may need? Thanks to anyone for suggestions.
hi friend,we have 3D fiber laser machine, can do the 3D works
Fiber lasers are trending hard! Mine will be here next week :)
I’ve had mine for a year now, just now finding time to film it!
Thank you for creating this video. I appreciate the context and presentation. As you may know, the information for using this laser is basically non-existent, and your video is the most promising resource to other users out there.
You mentioned you would be adding some other relevant how-to information to this playlist.
Can you provide more information, or link in the additional resources you found helpful?
Have you moved over to Lightburn now that it is available for fiber?
Thank you for providing a much-needed lifeline to new Omtech Fiber users!
Once you focus the laser / lens once and create a focus jig, do you just always use the jig to focus?
I have a question i hope you can answer:) can the 20watt omtech fiber laser etch on to metal business cards as good as swipeskins do check out their website if you could help me tell me what laser they have:)
First off, amazing video. It has really helped get me started with my fiber laser. Do you have the file of the tool you use to focus the laser? I have a C02 laser so I could make the tool. Second, where can I find the other videos you have done on this laser? I have looked but I can't seem to find it. Last, what are your tips for EZ Cad and setting up the laser since getting it over the workspace perfectly is a hassle. Thank you!
since this video, lightburn has added fiber support (in private beta form). It's superior in every way, so once i do more videos, I'll show off lightburn only.
Good job on the laser video
I was wondering if you have a video out for setting up the rotation device l have the 50 watt laser engraver and I really want to get to use the rotisserie but I am having trouble setting it up I do get it to turn but the image on the object and screen does not match up even double checked the dia Hope you can give some advice or a step by step setup video for beginners would be great
Been looking for a fiber laser engraving machine for a long time. We make Damascus knives...have you ever tried it on nickel/carbon? Appreciate the videos.
Yeah, it works great!
Any update on Lightburn to run fiber lasers ?
Hmmm... where did you get a piece of scrap TRANSPARENT aluminum at 07:28? That stuff is rather pricey :)
Haha. I never caught that! It’s like a unicorn!
Cool video! I’m looking to get one of these. Does this unit come with the rotary?
No, it was an add on
Great video! I've had my eye on this exact model for a long time! I know sometimes imported hardware like is is finicky and buggy, and support is usually non-existant... How has your experience been learning the ropes and working with omtech? Is there any long term maintenance that needs to be planned to keep it running well?
learning the ropes is basically go in blindfolded :P No maintenance at all as far as I'm aware. It just works!
Subscribed. I’m saving up for a 50W fiber laser machine , hopefully it can provide me decent income. I’m HOPING to replicate full coverage scrollwork “hand engravings” on firearm slides. I’ve seen it done but nobody has done it on video. I’m sure I will learn a lot from your channel.
Question , you can order these to be compatible with “easy cad 2” .. do you think it would be s better program to learn on ?
How has it been going for u
@@LujosElPhoenix I got the laser actually 2 month ago! Still working on designs but I am almost ready to try out a pattern on one of my tisas 1911. I got a OMtech 30watt
@@NotoriousMastaG I see brotha I'm tryna start a business there's a niche in guns , trying to see what machine will be best and learning it
@@LujosElPhoenix omtech is really good and u get quality for the price. I got mine on Amazon and did the payment plan to pay it off over 12 months. If u can afford it the 50 watt will be a much faster engraving process. 30watt still does the job though! Good luck brother
hi myers, that piece of metal how do you paint it? or leave it raw? as final product? how much it costs the engraver?
Is there an all rounder machine for organic and non organic materials...?
What settings you using? I’m having to do multiple passes to get similar results.
Hi can you share the parameter for aluminium plate?
Is this brand a reliable one vs others ?
Can these units do axe head engraving? Surfaces that aren't completely flat. What are limitations of the softwhere?
You can apply a curve to the engraving the better you get but it takes time to learn all
The tricks
What do you do for exhaust for it? I’m saving up for one but I’m brainstorming my exhaust system currently.
Interesting this popped up, I ordered a 50 watt JPT with 2 lenses and a motorized z axis and ezcad 3
that costs a bunch!
Nice video. Can I do stainless steel charms with this 30W laser.
Yes. There is a channel called Barch Laser on RUclips, and they have some videos with information about all the materials a fiber laser can engrave.
Hi, what calibration did you use? power, speed, frequency?
Hello,I want to cut a name in a 1mm gold.
How can I adjust the parameters ( speed, frequency, power) for a clean cut?
How deep can you etch into brass, making nameplates, with raised lettering, and the background etched away
Can this cut thin copper foil? Somewhere in the range of 0.05mm - 0.1mm thickness. Also can it engrave plastics as well?
But that was anodized aluminum, result would be equally good with a CO2 laser if not better. Does fiber lasers work onto an untreated and reflective alloy surface?
How deep can that engrave? I am a type 7 FFL (manufacturer) and am trying to mark things in house vs farming it out? ATF has depth standards for markings
Plenty of power to do NFA marking since NFA depth standards is not super deep
Awesome videos
Would you need a fiber laser to engrave metal yeti cups? Also, is this the right tool for engraving slate coasters? Thanks so much
co2 can do slate just fine
How do you like this compared to em laser
Inspired on your video I bought the Fiber Laser 50w from OMTech but I can't make it work the EZCAD2 keep saying demo version and do not get comunication with the laser machine. Do you have any Idea what could be wrong? Thank for your help. You have amazing videos!
Should install the driver that comes with the software from the fabricant
Good video my friend, however, you could laser those on your Co2 easily. Anodized aluminum will laser just fine on a Co2, I have been doing it for years. A Co2 will not laser good on non anodized aluminum. Reason I bring it up is because you could have a jig in your Co2 and do like 10+ at one time instead of 1 at a time.
YDFLP-E-60-M7-M-R
Can we buy this??
Could you run multiple pieces at once?
Sure can!
I'm looking into fiber lasers. Have you ever wished that you got a 50w instead of a 30w?
do you think the 30 watt would be good for low volume or do you think the 60 watt is the way to go? i own a powder coating company and will be etching into powder
I'd think 30W would work for powder coat work. Get a JPT MOPA type if you can... much more versatile. He didn't mention, but I'm guessing it's a Q-switch model.
@@jackwilborn2353 also to note if you must get the c version of the JPT mopa though it does cost around 2k more
I wanna buy one
Hi! Im working on steel and i have a question. How can i obtain a smooth engrave ? I mean the area that i want to carve after lasering is not smooth
Dude, you're breathing heavy metals... Appreciate the content despite the fact, thank you, sir.. !
Great video but what is the difference between the 30W vs 20W? There is definitely a difference in the price. Thank you!
since no one answered you the higher in Watts u go the more it will cost. Also depends on if it's mopa and such. Unless you are going into like 500 watt range for cutting the only real benifit is it does the job faster
will it cut sheet
I’ve read in some advertisings that it also does leathers, is it true? Thanks.
It will!
How long the laser last?
Laser lifespans.
How do you go about pricing different things? Do you have a set price or does price change for different pieces? Is the price the same if someone wants a gun engraved or a knife?
One offs get priced higher, multiples get a discount.
@@MyersWoodshop what's a good starting price to start offering engraving for a single item so I know where to start my pricing?
I know this is intended to engrave/mark but have you used it for cutting through material? If so, did you have any problems? I spoke to a distributor who said you'll burn out the power supply in a short amount of time. Looking to make cuts 0.15mm-0.5mm.
I have cut through an aluminum can with it.
dont kill me but how much money can you make a mon th starting off with a 30 watt laser ?
Can you do a gun scroll engrave, doesn't have to be a real gun maybe like a Tokyo marui 1911 nickel air soft pistol
definitly.
did you see that lightburn has support for this now lol
Hi, was wondering could you have engraved 5 pieces at a time..
Fiber lasers lose power, speed and a bit of focus the farther they travel from the center point, so you want to keep your engraving area as small as possible.
Keep it up, thanks :)
Is glass an approved material for these? More specifically, thin glass like wine glasses
1065uM wavelength will pass harmlessly through glass... need a co2 for glass ...
That's nM, not uM
I'm looking for an affordable laser engraver for my flask business. It would be my first laser engraver any suggestions? This laser is awesome but its a big investment (do-able but big) Is this beginner friendly? so you know of any other lasers that may get the job done? I'll be watching your other content just in case you don't reply :) !! Thanks!
You'd definitely want a fiber laser, and they just aren't cheap. This one is one of the cheaper modals. It works well!
I see on their website it does stainless steel, does it do mild and hardened steel too?
yep!
@@MyersWoodshop which is better the “split” or non split?
They are the same. I have the split, which means I can move the table and beam separate from the tower. Use my links if you get one!
@@MyersWoodshop I definitely will thank you. In the mean time while I save up, do you have an a site where I can sent my knives to be engraved ?
Mine doesn't work. I can't connect it to any computer and install driver.
Can you engrave motorcycle parts and if so how much and I would like to talk to you about it
At 7:25. What rotary roller attachment is that? Why did you choose 30w over 50w?
Since he did not answer I will. It is off of a onefinity Z axis. Not a rotor. He put a bison head onit. Router holder bracket.
Ben, Did u know that you can use lightburn with cad? 🤔
Lightburn just announced they are working on adapting fiber lasers. So excited
I’m in the beta, it’s incredible
Hi, i have a fibre laser JPT 50 watt cutting sterling silver. Im having problems with small brown fleck marks showing up across the surface after cutting which dont dissapear even after sanding and filing back or pickling. Has anyone come across this problem?
That's insanely fast!
Insane. I meant it when i said blink and you'll miss it!
@@MyersWoodshop is this laser good for stonework as well?
I’ll try it!
@@MyersWoodshop did you try it yet?
I just found OMTECH. Most likely will get 20w. How bad can ezcad be?
Lightburn just announced they'll work with this! I've been beta testing and it works great! Skip ezcad!
@@MyersWoodshop where can I go to find more info on LightBurn working with this laser? Thanks
So how much?
Will it Cut stainless steal How Deep for stencils ?
hi , yes,it can cut Ss,gold,silver etc.,
Is it danger to the eye?
Good info and fyi, a 30 watt fiber laser will cut solar cells in multiple passes.
thanks
I make knives and would love to get one of these to mark my name and logo
There is no danger for your hands and skin with the laser. It will feel warm, but not cut you :)
Hi do you have the settings to laser a photo onto dog tags I’ve tried few times but the picture just don’t come out good maybe I’m doing something I’ve got 30 watt fiber laser. Thanks
@@Fastcarz165 maybe ask in a forum or FaceBook group. Getting an answer in the commentary field on RUclips is very unlikely.
So…. Customer service = 0 ?
duuuude. Wear some laser goggles. Those q-switched lasers have peak pulse power of like 50kW. All it takes with a galvo laser is one overly shiny surface and that deflected beam bounces right up at your face. Your eyeballs have to be worth more than $50
Wasn't very helpful for me to get stated with the laser but more so how you get started. Not very detailed
Noisy and disruptive. The OMTECH CO2 laser's loud operation is a constant source of frustration, disrupting our entire workspace
How do you get it to spell out the preview?? Mines just a box
