Children of Men (2006) - Immigration scenes

- Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
- In one of the most prophetic dystopian sci-fi films, Britain (and the rest of the world) is on the verge of collapse, as escalating immigration problems are topped by an 18-year infertility crisis.
In this collection of scenes, one can see the brutal extremes British government has resorted to in order to tackle its immigration issues.
Director: Alfonso Cuarón - Кино
In graffiti:
“Last one to die, please turn out the light”
Why are you here mox?

"Last one alive lock the door"
Fun fact: The elderly woman speaking German in the cage is Miriam Karlin, an actress who appeared in another famous dystopia set in London, "A Clockwork Orange." She played the cat lady Alex bludgeoned to death for those interested.
Thank you, Ryan, very interesting!

The actress memorized her lines, she DID NOT write the script. The screenwriter included this prejudicial attitude as it highlights the hypocrisy of being a victim of oppression while simultaneously holding yourself superior to other victims of oppression who are a different creed & color.
I find that scene beginning at 2:50 so unsettling. While the masses are living in a horrific dystopia, and immigrants are being locked up in cages and send to concentration camps, there’s just this walled-off section of society living in complete luxury.
It is very unsettling, I agree
@@dirtisbetterthandiamonds Anthony Bourdain openly stated that there would be no peace until white people were bred into cappuccino / coffee coloured people!.. In other words he advocated the extermination of a different race to himself as the final solution (he did not consider himself white but rather jewish). He was a bad man.

Sunak is complicit in war crimes
The saddest part of this is that britian was trying to maintain itself as one of the last governments and even these harsh measures weren't enough to stop the almost guaranteed civil war
@JeanClaude Clemenceau just stop invading countries you twat and leave them alone.
@JeanClaude Clemenceau you see these acts as symbols of better times, others see them as early warnings before the decline of modern civilization. All these events happened less than 300 years ago, all very recent as far as human history is concerned. Tyranny will only slow the corruption of humanity's lands and the suffering of its peoples, another solution must be found.
JeanClaude Clemenceau Wow, you give a pretty simplified view of history and cherry pick examples. The Nordic countries in the middle and latter part of the 20th century soared economically under democratic socialist governments, going from some of the poorest countries in Europe to some of the wealthiest. The Asian Tigers experienced tremendous economic growth while liberalizing their political systems in the 20th century, South Korea made by far the most dramatic rise. How does your truthism account for that?
JeanClaude Clemenceau First, your explanation for cherry picking makes no sense. Extrapolating from a few examples is not simple, it ignores every other example there is.
Second, we are better at measuring depression and happiness today than before, and suicides are not up. Suicides have been steadily declining over the past century in the Western world, here’s a UK study on the topic: academic.oup.com/ije/article/39/6/1464/736597
JeanClaude Clemenceau I think we have different definitions of ”practical” and ”simple”. I don’t think you’ve proven anything by just citing a few, hand picked examples and then draw conclusions from that in any simple manner.
I have a friend who’s a woman. She’s 6’2” and taller than most men. I would be stupid if I would use this hand picked example as proof that women are taller than men as a rule.
And your method of reasoning doesn’t work since you thought suicides were up in the Western world.
Not that far off.....stay vigilant

The movie is pretty much about humanity.
what a prescient film. The best part about it is it doesn't specifically endorse or condemn the government or the fishes but instead goes for an honest, nuanced approach
Simply just accurately portraying this kind of hell-government is enough of a condemnation in and of itself if you have any empathy for the people being opressed, Come and See (1985) is a good example of this

If the latter, I wasn't really (from what I remember, my post disappeared for some reason) making an interpretation of the film, but giving reasons for why it's a good thing that the film didn't tell a story about a dystopia caused by a political entity or group, but rather showing the fucked up government as another example of the fucked up world. It could have gone in the direction of the fishes being good people, fighting against an evil tyrannical government, with that government being the cause of why everything is fucked up. But it doesn't, and the film is better for it.

Right now Britain is attempting to implement a policy to send failed immigrants to Rwanda (which isn't Democratic and civil liberties are under constant threat). While we aren't exactly putting people in cages (yet) this is already about to happen. The British Government forgets sent treaties and laws we signed up to forbid the policy. @@TheAlexagius the mental gymnastics some people perform to justify fascism and concentration camps is both amusing and a little disturbing
@@ethenaux I see no mental gymnastics. I see a fictional setting with circumstances which are beyond any extreme we have ever experienced in reality. I always liken scenarios like this to an analogy from the movie Titanic.
In one of the final scenes, one of the lifeboats is rowing away and Mrs Brown is arguing with the boat captain. She is demanding him to go back and save the people in the water, as there is more room in the lifeboat. The captain refuses, saying they would all swamp the boat and capsize them as there are too many people.
Most people on the left would go back, even though it would almost certainly capsize the boat and everyone would die.
I am the level headed boat captain, telling everyone to sit down and shut the fuck up, as I reluctantly row away.
That is the problem with those of the left (and the right). They are driven mostly by emotions and seem to completely lack foresight and critical thinking skills.
Real poetic. The wonderful thing about fiction is understanding the messages hidden inside the story itself, but let's not forget that the titanic movie was a dramatization of a real event that killed 1,500 people, and our current world wide refugee crisis is killing tens of thousands on the daily.
See, the "left" might want to go back and risk their own lives to save the people in the water. The "right" might want to abandon them to guarantee the safety of a few. The people drowning are wondering why there are only 16 lifeboats on a ship that carries over 2,000 people.
Fortunately, captain, we do have an answer to that question. What once was 43 lifeboats were brought down to 20, then to the policy minimum of 16, it was a decision made by the very powerful British Board of Trade, and J. Bruce Ismay inheritor of a (in today's value) multi-billion dollar industry. They decided that lifeboats would ruin the aesthetic of the titanic, and damning 1,500 people to a very painful death.
At least Thomas Andews had the dignity to go down with the ship he designed to be 'unsinkable.'
To continue the parallel, it's multi-billion dollar corporations that are pumping pollutants into the air, water, and earth creating hundreds of thousands of climate refugees. They that are breaking apart entire political structures in other countries to capitalize and gatekeep their natural resources; to sell back to them at a profit, or utilizing the locals as a labor-slave resource so we can buy mass produced garbage on the cheap. These are the people who legislate gatekeeping policy that undermines the basic human rights of people a lot like you and I. These are the people who decided that 1,500 people would die in an emergency, not dis-similar to todays corporations who fought against the legislation that would have mitigated the spread of a virus that killed over six million in two short years so they could continue to profit off of the tragedy.
Unlike the titanic, the people who suffered from the destruction of these unimaginably large industries, will never see justice.
You see, captain, it doesn't matter that Mrs. Brown lacked "foresight and critical thinking skills," she was scared and didn't want to see people die when she felt she could help. The captain was terrified, and likely just wanted to see his family again. Neither of these people are in the wrong for being emotional because neither of them had much power in this situation and they were scared. It was J. Bruce Ismay, the British Board of Trade, and today's massive corporations that seem to be completely irrational and out of touch. A tragedy that never had to happen had they had foresight and critical thinking skills
If we're going to see the forest through the trees then lets be realistic about our expectations, you aren't the captain of the lifeboat. Statistically, you wouldn't have been on a lifeboat at all. You would have been a body in the water.
I hope you have a life jacket, captain.

But I also feel like any kind of hostility may just be the same kind of helpless coping behavior.
