Great Review! I have a golf mk5 2006 1.9 tdi s i had that issue you mentioned where the engine would be in limp mode it was still drivable but the engine has no go so to speak in the end all that had happened with the age one of the electrical coils had become loose and the turbo wasn't essentially being told when to go all it required was following the electrical wiring wriggling the casing with all the wires in. Once this had been done the turbo clearly started working again and it was like it was a brand new car. Haven't had any trouble since and this was about 4 month ago drives great now.
Hands down, best car review I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Just a simple ,behind the wheel nice conversation. And I didn't want you to shut up!....because it was so helpful, the way you try to convey your information to the viewers. I'm subscribed, and , honestly, I am feeling a sensible, honest, vibe. I've only been interested in cars this past year since the incredible moment I sold my beloved Peugeot 205 diesel. Since then , I have been bitten with the car bug. Going from a 1995, to a modern car has been a real eye opener 😳. Lol. Keep up the good work😎😎👍
You are like me, found the Golf TDi, Love it and tell everyone else about it!. they drive like a BMW, thats how solid the driving experience is. I have a 2004 GTTDI MK5 98000 miles which is my pride and joy. the best thing is that when you look after these motors they will run to 400,000 easy. top video pal 👍
Thank you for your comment. I loved my MK5 Golf Tdi. It was the only car I have had in recent times where I used to take it for a spin with no real destination and just enjoy the drive with some great music playing in the background. Such a great car and I do miss it. Cheers, Tony - WTA
Have a 2008 1.4 petrol comfortline for 3 yrs now. 90k miles on it. Feels like 4 year old car. Bit heavy on petrol . 30 to 35 mpg in city. Great solid car
I have a mk 4 golf tdi pd 130 and its been s pleasure. Very quick with incredible fuel consumption. Its on 205000 miles and engine still perfect. Although its still my daily driver it will need gearbox service as theres signs of wear. I am upgrading to the mk5 golf:-)
The MK 5 is a great car to own and the one we had, which featured in our review, was so comfortable on a long drive and great to chuck about when driving down country lanes. We are no mechanics but if you are looking for one we would say to look for rust on the front wheel arches, as they are well known for rusting there. Make sure that the turbo is ok as they tend to clog up and the car goes into limp mode, which towards the end of our ownership of the MK5 Golf happened a lot and make sure the air con works ok. There are plenty of forums out there to read up on and read the review of it on honestjohn.co.uk as it does list a few other problematic things about the MK5 that are well worth bearing in mind. We hope you find a great MK5 Golf to own and enjoy plenty of miles driving it like we did! :D
I've got a mk5 and had the rusty front wings, there are foam pillars inside in the wings that hold water and muck hence the rusting on the arches. Mine currently has 139,000 and is running like a dream
Thank you for commenting, especially about the rusty wings. Also glad to read that yours is running like a dream at the mileage you have mentioned and I wish you more happy miles. The MK5 Golf is such a great car and I really do miss mine as it was the only car that I have owned in recent years that I just took out for a drive when I fancied it plus it was super practical and great on fuel. Such a great car! Cheers, Tony - WTA
I own a 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit 2dr. I bought it brand new in March of 2009. It's been very reliable. In Europe it would be a 2008 Volkswagen Golf. My car has a 2.5 litre Five cylinder engine.
To be honest I really do miss it as I loved getting in it and just going for a drive, which I haven't done for a while with the other cars I have featured. Thank you for commenting and have a great Christmas!! Cheers, Tony - WTA.
They are a great car and I really do miss the one I had featured in the video but with a turbo that was dying a death and its constant maintenance needs the costs were a bit too much for how much I used it so I had to change it. Hopefully one day I will get a newer one and if I do you can be rest assured that it will be featured on this channel. Thank you for commenting and I hope your car brings you miles more smiles!! Cheers, Tony - WTA
great video, looking at 2008 Match models myself for my first car, I'm a late bloomer for driving (27) so my insurance is a bit cheaper than a 17 year old so the 1.9 TDI Golf aint a bad option price wise also in Ireland cars made during and after 2008 are taxed based on emissions so the diesel fits into one of the lower tax bands. A 2007 same model and engine would be double the costs to tax.
Hi there and thank you for your comment. The MK5 Golf is a great car, especially in the Match spec where you get a few extra options which make it well worth considering. Amongst other things to check I would look out for the Air Con to make sure it blows very cold (known problem with the MK5) and give the car a good test drive (especially at speed down the motorway) to make sure that you have no issues with the turbo, which we had towards the end of our ownership. Otherwise we loved it and you are very lucky to be driving around Ireland which is such an amazing place to be, especially around Galway and the like!! Good luck and if you get chance you will have to tell us how you got on. Cheers, Tony - WTA.
Nice review! Funny when you mentioned the A1231 in the North East - I commute along that road every day! Wouldn't have guessed that's where you were driving, based on your Brummie accent :o)
Buy the petrol 1.4i S entry level model of the Mk 5 .....It is a very good car for getting from A to B, and there's no turbo to go wrong! Sod the aircon ....I don't need it.
Ha ha the air con part of the comment made me laugh. It was a great car and at the time of purchase I did have a choice between the TDi (featured in the video) and the SDi, which is the non-turbo diesel version of the Golf MK5. In hindsight I should have gone for the SDi but I wanted the extra gear that the TDi Sport had (as featured in the video) plus it had a bit more power. The petrol version would have been a bit too much in terms of road tax etc to run but you are right it would have been a bit more reliable. Great car all the same and I do still miss driving it to this day 5-6 years later! Cheers, Tony - WTA
Hi there and thank you for your comment. I only select the gears that I feel are appropriate with the road conditions, gradient of the road, traffic numbers and how the car's engine is sounding under load therefore if I feel that 5th or 6th gear is appropriate then I tend to select them. I was doing the same with my Micra today (review of which is on the channel ruclips.net/video/09WzIjnnj3Y/видео.html) and as it has a 1.5 turbo assisted diesel engine there is a bit more low level grunt which helps me go up the gears a bit earlier than if I were to use say a 1.2 petrol Micra which would be a totally different story. Also the VW Golf featured in the video is a 1.9 TDI which has a nice bit of torque when the turbo is working ok and does allow me to use the gears you are questioning. Everyone has their own driving style and I am sure that yours is completely different to mine whether mine is good or bad I have been driving like this since the early '90s and never been through a clutch yet so it seems to work ok for me :). Hope it helps! Cheers, Tony - WTA
I am afraid being a little on the short side it would be unfair for me to advise you either way. Your best bet would be to visit a used car dealership near you and try one out for size. Cheers, Tony - WTA
I am 185cm and I have one of these mk5 golf. I sit very comfortably in my golf with out any trouble whatsoever. Bear in mind that I commute to college 250 kilometres every day for 8 months now (I bought my golf a week before starting uni) and I never had trouble with space, etc. The only thing I would say is, if you're buying this car for commuting purposes then go for diesel, if in town use only then you might consider petrol but again there's no harm in owning a diesel for saving money on fuel. I have the 1.4 petrol and I spend around €100 to €140 a week. That's really expensive but also consider the fuel prices that's been going crazy lately.
@@THKILLERSPORTUGAL That's very good, Congratulations. I am planing to purchase the 2008-09 mk5 golf 1.9 tdi this summer which the reason why I'm watching this video. As I commute every day to college, my conclusion is that buying petrol version of mk5 golf was my only mistake so I'm looking forward for buying one with a diesel engine.
Thank you for your comment. We can’t really say as we are not qualified mechanics plus it depends on how the car has been looked after, how many miles it has done and if it has been serviced regularly. Might be worth you visiting a few Golf MK5 forums and see what they say.
1.9 tdi 105 suffers camshaft issues & Turbos blowing . 2.0 TDIs suffer from oil pickup pipe failure if you’re lucky both engines can do crazy mileages you just have to look after them and service regularly using the correct Engine oil specifically for PD engines

You get a simple and easy to work on engine whilst enjoying the features of the mk5 chassis (I don’t like the mk4 golf at all) They are not at all quick though haha

I own a Golf Mk7 1.4TSI, and the dashboard has a gear shift indicator, Which recommends 6th Gear at 40mph, and 5th at 34/35mph
