Freightliner additionally acquired 90016 which was provided by EWS as a replacement for 90050, which was withdrawn in 2004 following fire damage while on lease to EWS, suffered a transformer fire at Coventry on 30/9/2004 while working 4M73 an Ipswich to Ditton container train .90050 was the last mixed traffic electric loco to be built at Crewe Works for BR and was also the last 90 to be released into traffic. its suffered server fire damage over 19yrs ago and there was way to much damage for it to be repaired hence its was stripped of all usable parts for the rest of the class aswell as 90033 - and its only on loan to Crewe Heritage Centre from Freightliner.
Popped over last weekend to do some measuring up and take some pic's, had a brew with the curator he told me it was on it's way. Don't worry, the restoration guys are spot on and the guy who does the paint is pretty damn good. Not really a fan of post steam, but the 125 he just painted in the yard is pretty awesome.
Thinking of visiting Crewe Heritage Centre this month, same day as non event day visit to Nantwich. Will look out for Progress Rail at Longport on the way through on the 'Knotty' (Crewe - Derby line).
Yes, not much use for electric locos to work in preservation, unless on the mainline, at a great cost! Hoping to get a video of it arriving at its new home.
So I'm not the only one thinking 90050 should be cosmetically restored & displayed it Crewe Heritage Centre then! Are Freightliner still using their 90s?
which way were they heading and what sort of time was it ? do you know the headcode they were on ? we dont tend to see much scheduled 90 action on the west coast at weekends, LSL90s yes - on railtours - but not so often Freightliner 90s@@michaelward2082
@@johnson_street_IEMD I was at Stratford from 1140am, to 1.20pm sat 7th October, both on freightliners to or from Ipswich, the line from Ely to Peterborough being closed for engineering work along with the Ely to Kings Lynn line, I never made a note of the time, also on freightliners were 66707, 66711 and 66737, usually 90s spend a weeken at Ipswich
Nice video great camera work as usual as always I am really enjoying your lovely videos and camera work keep your lovely camera work up I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on RUclips bye for now Philip
Cos it was a parts donor and there wasn't a further use for it .. storing it anywhere else is going to take up valuable space, one only has to look at where DBs 90s ..and their surplus 60s have been stored for the last twenty years to see
I'd have thought electric locos that were just over 30 years old would have some useful life left in them, so what's the hard nosed business case for letting them rot at Crewe? Is it really cheaper to run diesels under the wires hauling freight trains? Is it because the cost of swapping them for diesels at the point where the wires stop is too costly? Or just that because the passenger demand has gone that they're surplus to requirements? These are 5,000 hp machines!
@@johnson_street_IEMD I thought the main route for the 90-hauled freights was the West Coast Main Line, not the Anglian routes? The ECML power upgrade is to allow more fast paths. The West Coast Main Line also has issues with traction draw, especially with the freights, particularly around Euston, Crewe, Preston, and the north side of Birmingham. There's a long-running program to upgrade, replace or modernize existing power feeders on the WCML that's been delayed multiple times. I saw a map of it somewhere
@andrewreynolds4949 the 90s join the services at ipswich and go from there to Trafford Park, Crewe Basford, Coatbridge, Ditton and Garston .. and may soon be operating Ipswich to Daventry DIRFT
Because it’s only a cosmetic restoration and freight liner probably don’t want to give away a different 90 which can be of use to them as they run the 90s daily still
@TRAlNVlDEOS yep spot on .. and hopefully they'll acquire DBs 90s to bolster their fleet with the contracts they've recently secured.. both the active ones to swell operations and the long term stored ones to service their active fleet for parts as and when
I’m glad that 90050 is saved
It's good that 90 050 has been saved the next thing is to restore it to its formal glory
former :)

Seen 90050 at Crewe Heritage Centre last month & 90001/002 when I went to Nantwich yesterday.

They do an excellent job
Yes, passed the Centre recently on way to Chester 197 spotting and 91112 and 87035 looked immaculate, congratulations on the paintwork

Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Definitely coming by road, hope to get a video of it arriving
The best news I’ve heard for that 90! I’m hoping it can be rebuilt to its once running condition!
Unlikely I’d say - However a preserved static display is better than nothing at all. 👍
@@trainsplanes Let me get it from the horses mouth on Saturday, I doubt it will be a big secret.
Rumor online is it’s gutted for parts. My guess is it won’t run again
@@andrewreynolds4949 yea it’s been completely gutted inside and out but now crewe heritage are trying to rebuild it to its former glory
Good news!
Yeah now at our place and myself and James have already started the work on it
Nice one buddy - You guys did an amazing job on the 91.. 👌👍
Great video as always 👍
Good news! Hopefully more share a better fate!
Seen at crewe Heritage centre last month.

Ah you can still get round the back then ?, I though it was a no go now the units have been built nice vid by the way,
It’s full of thistles but it’s possible again now 👍
Lot easier if it's going to be a static exhibit so you don't have to worry about all the electrical bits of course.

Where’ve the stored 86s been moved to?
They were all exported to Bulgaria between July and August this year.
So I'm not the only one thinking 90050 should be cosmetically restored & displayed it Crewe Heritage Centre then! Are Freightliner still using their 90s?
Sure are 😀 they were on 4S88 and 4M87 yesterday
I saw 4 at Stratford today, 90004 and 90014 plus 90013 and 90048

How did you manage access to view the yard given all the new industrial units now in situ ?
There is still access around the back but it’s full of thistles and boggy in places - Def don’t wear shorts. 👍

Side issue: I loved the look of the class 58s, but really hate the look of the class 70s 😂 The 70 looks like a racehorse 🐎 designed by committee 🐫
Good news that it's being preserved. But why store it in the open all this time? Criminal.....

Word is it’s cost of electricity right now. I know there’s some electrical feed capacity issues on the WCML that probably contribute to that too

Aren't there loads of 90s knocking about in far better condition that 050? Why use the most knackered looking one?

Buy a DB one and swap the good parts over and it will run again
Or... buy a DBC 90 in working condition. The damage to 90050 is far too severe.
I'm glad it's been saved i would rather keep the old-school locomotives and send all them sheds and class 70d off for scrap lol 😆 😊
