sixteen here but my dad played this for me on vhs when i was tiny (had a CHRONIC zippy phobia) but i revisited rainbow last month to get over said chronic phobia and have been hit with an autistic hyperfixation like mad. what a tune
I never realized that Hugh Fraser who composed the theme and played the flute was the same Hugh Fraser who played Captain Hastings in Agatha Christie's Poirot as well as a whole host of other TV parts until he mentioned it on Pointless Celebrities...
Hugh Fraser tells how the show's producer asked the band if they would write the theme. It was Fraser who came up with the melody, using his friend's wooden flute. His fellow band member did the guitar chords and, after lyrics were written, the band recorded the theme with a 24-track mixer in a studio at Thames Television.
This is a different recording to the one used in the TV show. If you compare them closely, the broadcast version has more octave slurring on the flute, is a slightly slower tempo, the drums are louder and have an open hihat in the pattern, the backing vocal harmony stack is totally different, and the lead vocal is much more relaxed and close-mic'ed. Also there's a 16th rest between the words "climbing" and "high", and the fuzz guitar section is generally much heavier. It's still amazing to hear this version and the rest of the original song, but I'd LOVE to hear a high quality dub of the actual recording session used for the TV show.
From the single not from the master tapes of the actual theme used. I have beginning and ending theme on a reel to reel recorded at thames which once converted i will upload.
I’ve been wanting to get this ever since I heard it 15 yrs ago at a Belle & Sebastian’s music club night! (coincidentally, they named themselves after a French children’s tv show in the 70s/80s). I totally got my hippy groove on to it lol! What’s the title of the vinyl & what does the sleeve look like? 🌈
Think I see why this was shortened, it shifts from happy and upbeat to slower and somewhat sad, kind of a reminder that Geoffrey is no longer with us. Still good, of course
Well, my secret guilty pleasure, was always hitting the 'air' cymbals at exactly the right time, everytime the closing credits were playing.Still have to do it !
RIP Geoffrey. Now you're painting the whole world with a rainbow. X
Who would have thought the theme from Rainbow was a prog rock classic
It was the 70s so totally apt!
💖😎UP!💃1st🕺Never!😎
Reminds me of Shaun Ryder out his nut on "The word" channel 4 😂
When I first heard Yes as an adult it gave me Rainbow theme tune vibes haha
Just needed a Richie Blackmore face melter to top it off😂
i never knew this was an actual full song. this song is absolutely fantastic....

I remember watching it as a kid. Brings back memories of the 80's. Such a great era to grow up in. Thanks for sharing!
Yes it was
Nostalgia hitting me hard here...
I am yes, only 18 but when I was younger, my mum used to put it on for me. Loved it. Miss being a kid so much!
Relatable 👁️👅👁️
Well, I am 39, and I used to watch this program when I was a little boy
I’m 18 too and watched it growing up! Didn’t expect to see another, my Mum had it on VHS
Ahahah I’m 20, the flute hits different mad memories
sixteen here but my dad played this for me on vhs when i was tiny (had a CHRONIC zippy phobia) but i revisited rainbow last month to get over said chronic phobia and have been hit with an autistic hyperfixation like mad. what a tune
Love this tune..great memories from 70's childhood..and what a fab hippie tune...Groovy and far out
RIP Geoffrey, A lovely man!
Jeez never heard this in full before! Just wow!
Still cant get enough of that drum fill from 0:19
Yeah that was always my favourite part as a kid 😁👌
I’m saying!!!!
Brilliant and beautiful. I grew up with the show. Now I know that I all I ever heard was the chorus!
I never realized that Hugh Fraser who composed the theme and played the flute was the same Hugh Fraser who played Captain Hastings in Agatha Christie's Poirot as well as a whole host of other TV parts until he mentioned it on Pointless Celebrities...
Thanks for letting us know, I didn't know this either.
Captain Hastings was a composer and flautist? Great Scott! Did Poirot know of his sidekick's musical talent?
And Wellington in Sharpe!
R. I. P Geoffrey, see you over the Rainbow x
This fucking rocks. Bertha - Trapdoor - Fraggle Rock - The Raggy Dolls...cartoons in my childhood had some amazing theme tunes.
I should go on record to say that I LOVE Fraggle Rock. My favourite character is Red!
part of my childhood i was born in 69 so i grew up with Rainbow, great show very very funny at times rip Geoffrey you where a great presenter.
RIP Rainbow man ... i used to watch this all the time ... died today 😥
It really does sound a hippie song of its time and I love it!
Jethro Tull...
Can we enter this for Eurovision next year?! 😂😂
how about john rainbow ex day tv vet goes crazy in a huey chopper
I always loved Rainbow as a kid, a real top-notch show. RIP Geoffrey Hayes and Freddy Marks, sadly missed.
The band is Telltale - Tim Thomas, Hugh Portnow, Hugh Fraser, Chris Ashley & Ted Richards.
+thetragicyouth Some sources say Rod Jane and Freddy sang it
+thetragicyouth the same Hugh Fraser who played Captain Hastings alongside David Suchet as Poirot.
Rod, Jane and Freddy are not credited as the singers on this record. This song and this band existed before the TV show.
psych track,

The drum's is favourite bit. Bungle is now living in the wet house in Birmingham lol
?
Rip Geoffrey Hayes... Another bit of our childhood gone..
There's something very comforting about hearing this tune :)
It seems that every kids show's theme has an unheard darker middle section.
You should try the full version of the school TV classic "Picture Box", that is eerie!
This programme used to be on the Nick Jr Classics block on Nick Jr 2 when kids were meant to be asleep (the late hours of the evening)
RIP Jeffrey...
Amazing memories to reflect and hold onto😊 with this theme tune !
Always thought that it cut off at the best bit (when the beat kicked in), now I can appreciate it in all its glory.
Rest in Peace,Mr Hayes,(Rainbow Presenter).
Ah - the joy of life! I had forgotten. Thank you Rainbow.
Rainbow was one of my favourite TV programmes. I have watched it as a child and adult. This song brings back so many memories.
I think whoever played rhythm guitar on this needs a shout out!
Lovely kids lunchtime show made by the quality company Thames Television, purveyor of nice kids programmes
Didn't know how good this tune was until i grew up. Now my boys listening to it and liking it!
RIP & God bless Jeffery.
Great stuff!
The first drum fill I ever learnt❤😂
RIP Geoffrey you will always be in my heart
I was whistling this in work for 5 minutes before my memory caught up and I realised it was rainbow.
Forgotten VHS on Twitch brought me here.
This song feels a lot different when you hear it while a monkey god kills grave-robbers.
Matt Berry's cover of this is superb.
literally only discovered it today and almost cried, my two favourite things 😭
wow as a kid you enjoyed the show....and as a adult you sooooooo RESPECT THE FULL TRACK.......MIND BLOWING!!!!!
Outstanding track from the first bar to the last, brings back a lot of memories - thanks for posting!
Absolutely wonderful. You have to smile to this.
Sheer Magic.
