Guys, I want to apologise. The diagram in this video for straight line and washing line is not correct. The spacing of the flies should be 4’. So top dropper to point fly is no more that 12’. Any longer than this and you will struggle to land fish on the point.
In this video I want to show you how to improve your presentation of buzzers from a drifting boat using three deadly tactics.
Buzzers or Chironomids make up a huge part of the Trouts diet and as fly fisher folk we can exploit this to our advantage. There is three main delivery methods for presenting buzzer patterns and I want to cover them one by one giving you detail on the pros and cons of each method.
If you can think of any other ways ti fish these kind of patterns let me know in the comments section below.
Excellent explanation for boat fishing. Not too sure about that drone catch though 😂
It was dicey 🤣
I am so happy you ade this approach and tactic video on chironomid/buzzer angling. A lot of people will learn from this one. Just super.
Thanks Gary, There are a couple of outlying techniques but these are probably the three mainstream ones.
Excellent video Lindsay. Thanks for putting this up. Very helpful.
No bother Deb 👍
Great video lindsay - struggling on the buzzers - no joy no matter what method I try - totally lost my buzzer mojo!😂
It will come back you just need one good day.
Excellent help there brilliant advice
Cheers Alan glad it was of some use 👍
Excellent presentation and graphics Lindsay. Super for the youngster to learn on their tablets and I also enjoyed watching these great presentations.keep them coming.
Thanks will do my best pal.
Another super useful video thanks.
Thanks Gareth much appreciated 👍
Great video Lindsay on methods used today 🐟🎣
Very welcome buddy.
Thank you for your detailed explanation.
Most welcome Sir 👍
Nice video video again Lindsay. There have been some terrific buzzer hatches on Rutland this season.
There has unfortunately for me every time I have been including when I made this video it's been howling with wind. Maybe get a better day in May.
@@lindsayiflyfish Bad luck Lindsay! I hope that you get better conditions next time. A lot of fish have been really tight to the banks which is a surprise to me after last years low water levels. Thank you for the videos, keep it up.
great advice and superb video once again Lindsay
Thanks John 👍
Another cracking video ...buzzer fishing I haven't ever got on with but getting better at it and had my pb last week 15.2 lb with a home made buzzer was well chuffed ...using straight line tactics ...which is new to me ....started using it last year ....normally always used the washing line method......and after watching this video I am gonna try the fixed bung method with the spacing you have mentioned ...my local Stillwater is only around 13 ft at its deepest ....I usually use sliding bung but that's with bung fly never tried buzzers this way
Great stuff Joe, the bung can be super effective.
Thanks Lindsay, great content, indicator section was useful to me
Glad there was something to help.
Another great informative video Lindsay, some amazing drone footage too!
Thanks Glen, trust you are keeping well pal.
Fantastic tactical information and superb video as usual Lindsay well done
Glad it was useful Billy.
Another great video Lindsay! Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks. I'm going to Rutland for three days in June. Cant wait!
I hope it continues to fish well for you pal 👍
Just found your channel bud, excellent quality and descriptions, definitely subscribed and thumbs up 🏴👍👍
Thanks and welcome to the channel hope you enjoy the videos always trying to improve the production value and information.
Thanks for another great video Lindsay!
It's so interesting to me how the bung is frowned upon in the U.K.
I am in western Washington state, USA. Here in the Pacific Northwest of the States and up in western Canada fishing indicators on lakes is a go to method for many fly anglers.
We use quick release slip indicators to fish up to 20' deep regularly.
A balanced leech pattern paired with a chironomid or Diawl Bach (or 2 where legal) have put a lot of fish in the net in my neck of the woods.
I will say we fish anchored here a lot as well...
with all that said... I had a 25 fish day on the washing line last weekend! 😁
Not sure why, probably because it is too close to course fishing. Some folks just don’t like it, I think it has its place.
@@lindsayiflyfish had to google coarse fishing.... makes sense I suppose
Lindsay, another solid video. I’m from Arizona (southwestern US), and I hadn’t done much buzzer(chironomid) fishing until the last 5 or 6 years. I’m trying more of the straight line method and other methods you use in the UK as I can get bored watching a bung(indicator). I use the sliding indicator set up very similar to what Phil Rowley does. What I do is use a short heavyish mono foe a leader and use a tippet ring. Then I go straight flourocarbon to a small swivel. I use a bobber stopper at the top to show where I had the indicator set. Length depends on the depth I’m fishing. At the bottom of the swivel, I go 2’ of flouro to the fly. We are limited to 2 flies in this state. If I use a dropper, I attach above the swivel. It’s a little complicated, but works for me and allows me to fish a lot of different depths.. I’ve caught fish 15 feet below indicator. My set up. Thanks again for video
That sounds great thanks for sharing your sliding bung method. Do you not find that it sometimes slips though?
@@lindsayiflyfish yes it has if you mean come loose, but move a few inches, no. The peg will make the hole bigger sometimes, sometimes it just slips for whatever reason. Used spider wire for awhile, and hardly ever came undone, but doesn’t sink as good as flouro. The bobber stopper help get the indicator back in place quickly. I have caught first 15 feet down in our hot summer months, and never could have landed them with the sliding rig
Lovely video. I just hade yesterday a marvelous day on the reservoir. Used the Bung methode. I use soft bungs with no hook in it. Keep on with the videos. I just love them.👍
Thanks John I will surely try pal.
Great video Lindsay, do you ever put the FAB on the top dropper with the buzzers below to see the fish reaction on a slow long draw then stop. Thanks John
I have tried with a fab on the top then one on the point. That works when you want to keep the cast right up.
I use new Zealand indicator for the (bung) which is a moveable indicator..comes into its own if you have different depth from shallow areas where you can raise the indicator on your leader close to your top dropper to keep your point fly just off bottom or slide it down if your going into fish a deeper section on the lake.obviously knowing the depth of water your fishing is extremely important as not only so you can adjust the indicator but also to space the flies evenly on your cast.usually I will fish the bung up to 15ft depths.anything over that I will straight line them using a floating or midge tip setup.if fish are feeding high in the water then the washing line is also a great way as you said along with fishing dail Bach's and crunchers and if fish are feeding hard then I'd often put a comorant on the point and retrieve the cast steadily through the fish
Thanks Adam, I take it the NZ indicator passes through the rod eyes?
@@lindsayiflyfish it can do.usually though I prefer to keep the leader and indicator outside the rod eye..it's fine with 12 ft leader but can be a bit more tricky with longer than 15ft
Awesome tactics
Basic for an old hand like yourself 😉
class as always sir
Thanks Denis 👍
That was great Lindsay!! Now the big question is... curved or straight hooks on your washing line?
Hi Chris mostly I fish straight hooks on the washing line.
Great video as always with the three methods clearly explained. The bung always divides opinion but I suspect the new Fulling Mill drop back bung might even cause some bung advocates to think it's a step too far. It's ust another float after all, isn't it? It will certainly catch fish that the standard bung would not. What do you think Lindsay, will you be using it?
It was designed by Howard Croston who I have enormous respect for. That alone make it worth a look.
Great video lindsay what pattern did the drone take 😊
That’s a secret 🤣
Nice video Lindsay. Question please, is fishing the bung in rougher water any good as I’ve always imagined the buzzers going up and down in the water column quite fast to be rather unnatural. Cheers Bud
It can work David but when the winds up I prefer to pull.
As ever full of great information. One key point that both newbies miss and experienced guys can ignore. Casting at an angle to the drift imparts more action and a natural presentation with the curve induced to the retrieve. Good tactic with the landing net while landing the drone. Even in the calmest of conditions on a moving boat. During a landing a slight breeze or a wake from a distant boat could distract resulting the drone in the water or hitting the boat damaging it or tackle. Please never go into reflex catch and release mode with that drone mistaking it for a trout. Too darn expensive.
Thanks Mick. 👍
hello, very interesting video! I really like the line assembly diagrams. do you use the blood knot or the surgeon knot ? We often have a debate with my friends fishermen about the surgeon knot on the bung, should we use the top strand for a better presentation or the lower strand which is more solid ? Sincerely from Belgium !
Hi Gauthier, I always is the bottom strand and use the surgeons knot to secure. Never had a problem 👍
Thank you for the advice !
Great video again sir was that one you caught at the end your biggest of the day 😅
🤣 no I think it might have been the smallest trout in the lake.
@@lindsayiflyfish the bung saved the day for me last weekend ended up putting it on for last few hours it was mad nearly a fish a cast set a chap up with the same he was new to fishing he got a fish after 5 minute he was happy getting one
Great video, I just love buzzer fishing the takes can be explosive..
Can I ask a question
Roughly how many different fly patterns do you use in a session & from your tried and trusted/ Go to fly patterns Roughly how many different fly patterns would you use in a season ie 60 / 80 / 100 thanks
I use only a few tried and trusted buzzers in different sizes my favourite is just a simple quill buzzer. I sometimes put other things on instead like crunchers and Diawl Bach's.
Lindsay I love your clips they are so informative. I am up in Assynt fishing the hill lochs. Wet fly is the traditional method but would buzzers work in these waters? Any advice gladly received
Not fished up there but buzzers work everywhere pal.
You say about max depth for fishing under the bung 12 ft, now if your fishing to international rules the yes you will need to put your indicator on a droper. However, I also fish a sliding indicator, using 3 float/waggler stops. Put 2 on above your top dropper, thread you bung on, set the depth you want with the single stop ( which can be retrieved back through the rod eyes) this mean you can fish up to 20ft. Try it works really well when you know the fish are lying deep and you need to fish static. I also use pike pop ups as bungs so they easily slide up the leader.
I like that idea John, I think I have tried similar in the past but your method seems better.
I too have caught trout as deep as 20 feet under a sliding indicator.
Another trick for deep water trout is using a Di7 type line, as long as the depth. Cast your flies out, count them down until they hang straight down, then s-l-o-w-l-y retrieve straight upwards, and hang on, as the takes can be savage!
Could you explain about the different tip lines. When you use slow and fast and the different lengths?
That may well be the topic of a future video. 👍
using 3 or 4 inches of strike wool attached to the loop on the fly line by about 5 inches heavy mono allows sight fishing with 18 foot + leader. The wool happily travels through the eyes of the rod.
I have used that method on Stillwaters we used to call it the Tash.
Hi great video. Im totally new ti this fishing and wondering if using straight line method I beed to build It with a tapered leader plus tippet or a one size fluorocarbon from fly line to flyes?
I use a level leader for my buzzer fishing but a tapered leader would work as well.
@@lindsayiflyfish thank you
Your four fly set up gives you 15ft plus from point fly to top dropper. How do you net your fish? Only asking as I've ended up standing on the thwart in a boat to land a fish when I haven't calculated my fly spacing properly 😢😢😢
That’s a mistake on my part then as the spacing should be 4’ between flies giving a total distance of 12’. That’s my bad sorry at 12’ landing fish is no problem 👍
Is the point fly anchor at the bottom of the lake? Or are all those flies suspended? 🙏
Depends on a lot of factors, depth of the water and speed of retrieve. I mostly fish from a drifting boat so the flies rarely reach the lake bed.
@@lindsayiflyfish thanks 🙏
A water I would love to come down to.
Make it happen Eddie 😉
Single angler from Scotland, but, it will happen now work is not a barrier.
The last few seconds 😂 so that's fly-fishing 2.0 ?
Always a worry la ding it on a small boat.
What is the song?
Not sure this video is nearly a year old sorry.
