Some notes about the composition as found on
www.jazzguitarcomprehensive.com/
Composer: Lee Morgan
Year: 1965
Origin: Introduced on the album Cornbread.
Style: Bossa Nova
Form: A-B1-A-B2 (32 Bars) [8-8-8-8]
A tag ending is often used to finish the performance.
Key: Ab Major
Harmony/Overview: The harmony of this composition is very functional and remains almost entirely diatonic. The changes revolve around II - V's that meander around the home key, and do not stray any further than a II - V of III. The melody is made up of a bop-oriented line and it uses two distinct motifs for both the A and B sections. It is common to play a stop on the first beat of the 8th bar in the A sections during the head, as heard on the original recording from Cornbread.
Recordings: This song has been recorded over 40 times to date. It was first recorded in 1965 for the album Cornbread. It is one of Lee Morgan's most popular compositions and it continues to be performed frequently to this day.
