If you're applying on places like ZipRecruiter, LinkedIn, and Indeed, then you're not using them the right way. Never apply for jobs through them , Instead use them like a search engine for job leads and go to the companies' websites and apply there instead and absolutely do not pay for services on those websites either because they will not get you any closer to getting a job than just applying straight to whatever company from their website

Surprisingly the CEO or other C-suite execs didn't get a bonus of any type and their base salaries are actually pretty reasonable. But yet we have had record profits for two years now. Something's not adding up. I suspect the company is buying some other company but it hasn't been announced yet. "The Great Resignation", for the most part, was mislabeled based on a misquotation of a report. The study asked IF you would leave your current job for a increased salary, better work conditions, better benefits, etc. It got reported that people WERE going to leave their jobs. That's where the panic came from. But the pandemic did expose how expendable people were in certain industries and some folks changed jobs. You do have to ask though did people quit their job because they saw the writing on the wall that their were going to be laid-off. Regardless, the job market has been a mess over the last five years.

High housing costs relative to income, stagnant wages, and income inequality drive this issue. Job loss, weak social support, medical expenses, evictions, and lack of affordable housing also contribute, while systemic problems and inadequate policies further perpetuate the phenomenon

Possibly anywhere from 3-6 months to actually get a job these days and more for senior level and higher paying positions. There are still jobs out there but it may not be the job, the pay, the benefits that you want. If you need 6 figures, you need the skills to get that and or connections also. I think I know what it is. We are in a serious recession and all the work has dried up but companies are still holding out against hope and keeping employees on because they think that the work will come back soon. I have anecdotally heard of truckers just not getting any work compared to last year.
Employees can sense this and know it's only a matter of time but they are not going to leave their jobs without redundancy, even if they can get another job offer which is unlikely. So we are in a period of inertia waiting for it all to hit the fan. Employers are holding out hope and don't want to risk the cost of layoffs/rehiring if they get more work even though they are bleeding cash. Employees are clinging on for as long as they can with no life rafts left for them to jump to.

I've had 3 interviews so far this year, but no job offers. I'm kind of giving up on standard employment. I'm shifting to gig work (pet sitting, driving, etc.) and selling handicrafts to get by, but it definitely isn't a rosy financial outlook.

All of the jobs I see on LinkedIn for similar job/experience as mine as paying $10-20K less than I make now and are requiring you to be in office. Advanced HR positions for $40K. So...homeless? The last time $40K was a decent wage was back in 2014.

So isn't it just that the FED has jacked up interest rates? Making life more unaffordable in general for consumers and making it more difficult to buy homes? So as the economy sucks more for consumers and it's more costly to move and to buy a home, the tendency is just to stay in the home that you're currently in and also to batten down the hatches and stay in the job but you're currently in.
People aren't leaving their homes and they're not leaving their jobs because the economy sucks for most people in the United States.
The increased desperation among the working class will likely be seized upon employers and they will probably use the opportunity to suppress wages and increase workplace abuse.

All of this is very true indeed. Whether in US or in Europe (I am France-based). Went through an illegal layoff 6 months ago from a 6-digit salary director position in Paris, just purely savings-driven. Have applied to +150cv in the meantime with only 6 interviews at hand despite 25 years of experience, holding 2 Masters and speaking 5 languages. No feedback at all from applications 9 times out of 10, even when being in the middle of a recruiting process. I am 48 and do not recall job market being so challenging to the extent where the only possibility of bouncing back seems either to be through your own network (which is quite uncertain) or being the upteenth guy on the market to start up your own company. Quite scary when workers are required to work longer as retirement age has been pushed forward.

So I am very picky now about which job I want. I only applied to one job 5 months ago for my cities waste water department because they offer a pension and more money down the road and I have a interview in two weeks. If I get it I’ll switch jobs but if I don’t then I’ll stay put because my job pays well.

That's the effect. The cause was massive layoffs all over the place, and companies declining to fill necessary headcount. Many are running "super lean" in anticipation of folderol in November - or because they think that AI is going to mean that they won't have to fill that necessary headcount because AI will take a lot of the donk work. (It's a good 25 years from that. There's still an awful lot of mechanical turking, companies using their employees' data to "train" AI to be more useful for business tasks, and...dreck. Lots and lots and LOTS of dreck.)

It if wasn't for the fact that my job is still 100% remote since Covid started I probably would have left by now. I don't dislike my job, but I am overworked and slightly underpaid relative to the market. I've had a few offers for 100% office and hybrid positions, but they didn't offer enough to lure me away. The only way I'd leave is if the commute was no longer than 20 minutes and it paid substantially more money (minimum 15% increase).
There was one company located literally a half a mile away from my house that I tried to get into but they did not offer me a job. I would have taken that one (it was 3 day a week hybrid) if offered.

I think your analysis is spot on. What I find interesting is the economic impact of the pandemic, although immediately severe, seems to have less overall impact than past economic downturns.
As far as jobs being redefined into positions with less growth potential, this seems to be the trend in the corporate world where all jobs are commodified.

in spanish (colombia) there are two common sayings:
    1. "mas vale pajaro en mano que 100 volando" (it could be translated as: "it worths more a bird in the hand, than 100 flying")
    2. "mas vale malo conocido, que bueno por conocer" (it could be translated as: "it worths more the bad thing that you know, than the Good thing you dont know")
When we do Job Hopping, we inherently are taking a risk that we cant land properly in the new job and become jobless. in dire times like these people will stick to what fells safe rather than what gives higher earnings unless they cannot afford their basic needs.
