  • In this video, we focus on the topic of iLobola once again.
We shall explore the process of ilobola, which can be lengthy and strictly formal. We also look into the negotiation process and what happens on the day. A crucial figure by the name of Theophilus Shepstone will be examined as he was influential in the number of cows that should be paid for iLobola. We will also look into his significance in this practice. The standard number of cows for an ordinary man would be 10, yet this may differ from family to family. We explore why it is 10 cows and the purpose of each cow is explained below.
The list of cows and their significance comes the work of Prof Gugu Mkhize (umsamo.org.za/.... The cows are as follows:
“Ubikibiki”, the first cow, is given by the groom (umkhwenyana) to the mother of bride (umakoti). The second cow is “ubhaqa”, given to the father of the bride to light the way. The third cow “ingquthu”, and the fourth cow “Umumba”, are given to the mother of “umakoti”, yet a portion of the fourth cow is to be used for the necessary work that accompany ilobola. “Imvulamlomo” is the fifth cow, is given to the father of “umakoti” for him to open his mouth and engage with “abakhongi” (the bridegroom’s representatives). The sixth cow “is imvula”, which “is the cow that gets mentioned first before even paying the ilobola” (Mkhize, 2011:np). “Unozungeza”, is the seventh cow which forms part of ilobola. The eighth cow is called “inhlabisamthimba” and gets slaughtered on the day of the wedding. The nineth cow is “isibhoma”, an additional cow that is also slaughtered on the wedding day for extra food. And lastly, the tenth cow is called “ibheka”, an additional cow given by “umkhwenyana” (Mkhize, 2011:np).
