- This video shows 3 different tests you can use to identify or diferentiate between real (cultured/natural) pearls and imitation/fake pearls.
These tests are very easy to use and you only need some pearl strands to compare. If done properly you can learn to do it like a Pearl Pro!

This is so much fun & very informative. I was allowed to wear my grandma's long strand of pearls for my wedding. I had never really been into wearing pearls until that point. Every other set was just.. cheap looking and feeling. But these, the sound and just holding them in my hand... I didn't know very much about pearls at all, & I could tell an immediate difference from the ones I've seen before. They matched my off white lace gown beautifully. I've been obsessed ever since. I've been doing some research because, I'd really like to own my own necklace one of these days.
So, you did FEEL it. Yes...once you attune to the pearl it takes you to a whole different level. It can become an obsession. I thank you for your comment :)

Wahoo, my pearl bracelet passes the test. Wouldn't matter if they didn't, because my husband bought them for me and that gives them all the value they need.

The mother of pearl ones are a problem, I have worked with both but am an amateur compared to yourself. I knew about the coolness and the overtones that real pearls have (the way they are faking baroque pearls is something else but I can see why, I have seen some beautiful irregular shaped pearls). I just love them and if someone asks me to make a string, I go out of my way to get a traditional box clasp because I just don't like seeing them with a lobster claw fastening, I'm maybe a bit eccentric when it comes to this but I like them to be properly knotted and everything has to be exactly right. I think if sea or freshwater creatures give their lives for these beautiful things, then we have a duty to present them as beautifully as we can.

I used to be jealous of my mom's pearls, growing up. But one day, while we were looking at them, the covering flaked off the glass beads! Afterwards, we decided to buy strands of beads, no matter the gem, and make our own! Best thing we ever did, along with cutting gemstones together with my stepdad.

@@DouglasMcLaurin Turned into a small time hobby & business. We have more than enough pearl necklace sets, good sizes, nacre, main colors. Clients can buy precious stones on demand. Fortunately, working in Comics gives me an hour or two to play with, every few days to design something new.
The 2 best tests are the tooth test and if you just gently slide the pearl over your tooth, you don't damage the pearl and feel the soft, but slightly abrasive surface immediately. Second, just gently, very gently rub or better slide the pearls against each other. If you ever did this with real pearls you will always remember the texture. And if the pearls are drilled, take a look on the borehole. Fake pearls have split-offs and you can find small rests from the coating. Real pearls just have mother-of-pearl and if the layer is quite thin, you can see the core.

Hi! I know this is a video that's 2 years old. I was told by a specialist in jewelry. He taught me a lot, because I bought a lot from him! 😂 He said to rub one pearl gently across your tooth (teeth). The real ones felt a bit gritty against you tooth. You can feel it and hear it. The fakes just glide right over your teeth, almost like glass. That was 45 years ago!

I obtained a vintage piece with tiny oblong shape pearls (a necklace with medium size green hearts.) I'm wondering if your testing methods apply differently with this type of pearl as I'm not noting all your similarities however I don't have any other comparison.
I am trying to compare having found another vintage piece today from an estate sale.
You hit a particular spot there...these tests are more adequate for the "round pearl shape". Would love to see this vintage piece you have.

My husband gave me a strand of graduated pearls (as his wedding gift to me) more than 50 years ago. He purchased them at a small jewelry store - not one of those "big-name" stores in a mall,etc..
My mother had a real pearl necklace & I remember they had a knot between each pearl to stop them rubbing against each other. It's almost impossible to see the deference between fake or real. They were all perfectly round & off white. I guess pearls never go out of fashion - they look very elegant & classy.
It is actually very easy to notice the differences unless the pearls are not very high in quality and the fakes are high quality.

Thank you, my mother who is 89, has a strand of "pearls" but she can't remember if they are real or fake. She thinks her grandmother gave them to her when she was 16 or so. They are a soft cream color. My mother was born in Italy, I know for a fact that she has had these pearls as long as I can remember. I'm an only child and my daughter is an only child as well as her daughter. I would love to know if these are real or not. I'm confused as to the real pearls do they not get warm? It seems as if you said they didn't. I have watched this video a couple of times. Each pearl is individually tied on the string and the string is very fragile now. Please let me know if real pearls conduct heat.

What do you think about the tooth test? If you rub them across your front teeth and it feels grainy, it's genuine. I find it pretty helpful to sort out fake ones (feel too smooth).
I really DO NOT LIKE NOR USE this test (Tooth test) because:
1) Pearls are softer than the enamel on your teeth. Your teeth can scratch the pearl!
2) Some fake pearls can actually "feel gritty" BUT they are fake. If you haven't got enough expertise you may say they are real (when not)
3) Some cultured pearls are actually over-polished and some have been coated with lacquer...they may feel smooth and you will say they are false, when not (low quality perhaps, but not fake).
I actually have some interesting tests on my channel...the water & fire tests are some, the UV test...do check them out. They are more reliable and the UV test is very easy too.

Yes. Not all pearls have a "mirror-like" reflection (called "Luster") but it is indeed a very desirable trait.

pearls don't always form perfectly round.. mother of pearl is shell. they cut the shell in to the pearl shape and drill them to be strung.
Mother of pearls is basically the outer shell of the oyster which is also used in jewellery.
How can I tell what grade my Tahitian if they even are Tahitian pearls are can I do a test on them. Or is it the color IDK please help me here I have a bracelet and necklace set that I am wanting to sell but do not want to rip myself or the buyers off...
Not as easy as a test. I would recommend taking a certified program such as the "Pearls as One" course so you end up with enough knowledge to be able to understand the grading process...and then add up experience and you will be able to do so. Please check out the course!

I worked for a jeweller and he always just touched the pearls to be assessed by tapping them on his teeth. It always worked!

I recently bought a strand of 52 white pearls size about 8-9mm from a Thrift store for $2.50(reg price was $10).....they have a very high mirror luster ......they are cold, heavier than the other pearl necklaces, and they have a different sound ......they are also strung on a wire so there are no knots between the pearls, ....they have a older type claw clasp......I think that they are real.....I really lucked out and found them......I'm going to take the pearls to a jeweler for appraisal........Hopefully they are authentic

I bought two strains of pearl from my Hawaiian trip on a flee market. It is kind of small pearls, but the seller said they are fresh water pearl and she guaranteed they are real pearl, what is fresh water pearl and different from mother of pearls?
Freshwater pearls are not grown inside oysters nor in the ocean, but in ponds, lakes and rivers inside mussels. China is the #1 producer and they produce way too many of these. They are real for sure!
Are some large pearls becoming less expensive for earnings? My friend is selling them in Canada for like 30.00.
Size matters a lot in pearl pricing, but so does the quality...you can get inexpensive & large pearls. I purchase this kind for my "cruel experiments"
I've one pearl in my pendant. It was quite expensive. It's around 9mm, has beautifull shine and little imperfections on the surface. Looks like very good real pearl. BUT it feels 100% smooth. I've some real pearls that have this sandy feeling so I know how it feels like. Is my pearl fake?
The imperfections actually tell you that it may be authentic (depending on the type, manufactured goods may also have imperfections). Think of leather goods: leather is the skin of an animal that lived in this world and had "experiences" so it ends up with scars and other skin imperfections; this actually is expected of leather and makes it unique. The same is true for pearls...except for processed ones or true Gems (devoid of imperfections). The pearl may be over-polished (thus the great shine) but will lose its grittiness, so it feels "fake".
I suggest you use the water and UV tests to examine it in better detail.

we have a lot of real pearls in philippines. All those real pearls has its sandy feeling when your scrape it with you teeth. smooth pearls are the simulated once.

If we buy fresh water oysters from amazon or eBay are they real pearls or are they faking us?
Look, these will be real oysters or mussels...with a real cultured pearl inside, but the animal was a young-sick animal and a pearl of know value (very low, usually) is placed inside the flesh. So it is mostly fantasy...but you can buy these for fun and it will be perfect! Just don't expect a Gem grade pearl.

Is one of them shell pearls? I bought a strand that was supposed to be real but I don't believe that they are they have a hollowed out clinking sound and feel to them they don't feel real.
Shell Pearls are imitations. Ceramic bead covered with several layers of delicate plastic film. So, you are indeed correct.

Don Won No. Some may use Mother-of-pearl beads...but the ones I have examined yield a ceramic bead.

I've heard of them. Know little of them.
Even if it is real shell...it is not a real pearl.
You can "peel" the pearl with a sharp scalpel (or burn it) and then examine the bead. Use acid to check it: if it is shell it will bubble and slowly dissolve. If ceramic or glass...it will not.
I was going to ask about shell pearls. They must share some characteristics with real pearls as they are made from mother of pearl.
Yes, specially their weight. But the plastic cover does away with the rest.

The authentic pearls serm to make a "clinking/tinkling" sound, almost like a very, very delicate wind chime. Still, I think the tooth/teeth test is much more accurate than all of the tests in this vid.

They are fun. Just not the real thing...but a nice fantasy.
I believe I have a black pearl necklace, meets the criteria, cold and warms up in my hand. It may be vintage bought maybe 20 years ago and decided to take a second look, the clasp is vintage. Tiny black beads in between each pearl

How do you tell cultured pearls apart from wild pearls?
Great question and not that easy to do if you are not knowledgeable. Easy answer? Get an x-ray of the pearl (at a dentist's) and if you see a large white and round "thing" (a nucleus) in the pearl it is cultured and not "natural" (your "wild")...but this may even fail you.
So, you want RELIABLE: find an expert or get a Lab Report (it will cost you).

On the sound test one is ringing, the grey AB type pearls, the other 2 are not. At least to me.

Confused if they get warm is real or fake??
Ok, look...BOTH WILL WARM UP...but the time difference is what is important: fakes warm up fast, authentic ones much slowly...AND fakes keep warmer for longer and authentics cool down faster.
Timing is everything...once you start working with this method you will begin to feel it...you have to play with it, trying many different strands.

hhmmm another site says the real pearls absorbe the heat. Real pearls also have a sandpaper feel to them they are not smooth.
Well, nacre is not very good at absorbing heat. What did they compare the pearls to? I compare them with metal, glass and plastic.
that is very correct. Real pearls retain heat and cold. Like most objects really. Real pearls feel sander against your teeth

Um no, the more nacre they have the more silky they are. Go to a high end jewelry store and touch a strand of Mikimoto pearls. It's kind of like the feel of a new cats paint job on a high end car. Deep luxurious silkiness.

La perla se mancho? Quiere decir que alguna impureza entro en contacto con el orificio de la perla. Debes llevarla a que reajusten tu perla, so pena que se suelte del poste y la pierdas.

Contact a reputable Gem Lab: GIA, SSEF or Liechenstein. Their website will give you the information you need. Good luck.
Lip test is out, will not work with lip gloss etc!! Same with cheek test, where you hv on blush & maybe toner!

This is a new one for me. And I've even had pearls "for lunch" (for experimental purposes) and they don't taste like metal...more like chalk!

Many do. I have worn them before. The old Rajs/Moguls from India loved wearing them too...in long strands. Renaissance time nobility -both men and women- loved them!

There are many varieties of artificial/fake pearls. Many don't even look like pearls at all. Some are just called "pearls" because they have a round shape, but they should be called just beads.

I was always told that if you gently scraped a pearl on the edges of your teeth that a a real pearl is smooth and feels like a stone and fake pearls are textured and feel more weightless.
Yes...you can use the "tooth test". Thing is that your teeth's enamel is much harder than the hardness of the pearl and you SCRATCH IT! You may not notice it (use a loupe or microscope) and EVERYTIME you do the "Tooth Test" you are DAMAGING your pearl and eventually diminishing its beauty and value. That is why I don't recommend this test AT ALL and now with our world-wide experience with PANDEMICS (COVID-19) you can even INFECT a pearl and then someone else does the tooth test and then another person...you see the implications?
