I Just Ordered a Motorbike With Pedals?! The New 30mph Engwe M20

- I'm always looking for fun and interesting bikes to build up and film, so when Engwe recently got in touch and ask if I'd like to try out the M20, I said yes! (even though technically I can't ride it on a road here). They've kindly gifted this bike to me for free for the purposes of creating this video, however there's no expectation that I say or do anything specific and all opinions shared are my honest review. I'm not being paid by them or anyone else and the intention of this video - as with my other bike build videos - is simply to entertain. Because an e-motorbike with pedals sounds kind of fun, right? Hope you enjoy it!

Such a shame the laws are so behind the technology. Last year I hired an e-scooter via an app in Barcelona and it was great fun. Perfect option for getting around the city, short commute or last mile things. One of these would replace a car for so many people.
Yea in city if you have a 20+ mile commute tho your options are a little different.
in germany you can ride these legally. you just need insurance and a driver's license for a moped.will cost around 50€ per year.
I get the wish to just drive it, but it's basically a scooter and can do a lot of damage in untrained hands. it handles very differently than a bike.
It's about to replace a commuter vehicle for me and go probably 40+ miles round trip.
Hope those batteries last
@@SethJefferies.i think the batteries in these bikes will last. Not only this brand. But most of the brands. Some experts say they can last 4 to 5 year.
But all will depend on how you use them and treat them also.
You can hire an escooter in most UK cities the same way you can across Europe. Only problem is they are illegal to ride if it's yours.
UK nanny state forcing people to buy electric cars and making pedal bikes illegal... Such a depressing little island
Just got mine yesterday!! I’m in love ❤️
I really want one, is it worth getting 2 batteries?? Hmm
@@luismejia857 I only got the one battery just bc my job is literally 1 mile away, but I’ve rode about 25 miles on it on one battery
Good old England. Anything innovative is strangled at birth!
I love when e-bikes have the faintest whispers of being a bike. There is one brand in the US that gives you pegs to replace your pedals.
lol. I joked with Nic that we should take off the cranks and weld on footplates.
Surron basically
@@antscape surron isn’t street legal..pedals or not it’s above 750w
@slimdunkin117 then most ebikes aren't because most of the "750" rated ebikes can actually output higher then there supposed too..there only limited by software.
What you need is a small battery with little current to do only the voltage multiplication for a higher speed.
You can be up to speed and use a toggle switch if you're not on a hill it shouldn't even get warmer.
Always check for warm wites or circuits under a laod to minimize any risk.
Go on the road in the uk with it and if you see the police just peddle they won’t know
Especially as you don’t need to register it or have plates
Put a 250w sticker on it
If you're responsible while riding in the UK, I can't see it being a problem. However, if you ride around recklessly as if it's a moped, you're more likely to get stopped.
You are lucky to have gotten one. My M20 and second battery are back ordered (US).
Oh really?
Nice video. I live in the United States and own a Engwe Ep2 Pro. I like the dual suspension and batteries on the M20. Wish I could trade my Ep2 for it.
Insane !!!!
My wife and I just bought a couple M20’s and we absolutely love them. So fun to ride and we like that there’s the option to peddle as well to help save battery / increase range. 26 mph is about the absolute max it’ll go for me at 205 lbs but that’s plenty enough for us.
35 km/h is the maximum speed
I’m 5’5 a buck 25 think I’ll fly away haha just playin
Got this ebike bookmarked. Would love to own it some day. Unfortunately UK laws prevent this bike being legal. 15.5 limit any higher it needs to be insured and you need a license.
fuck it mate, just get it and slap a 250w sticker on it, once you see a police car just pedal normally. that's what i'll do
I've got one.... also i live in the UK and never been stopped at all the police just look at me and give me the thumbs up or pull up next to me and ask me what bike it is and i tell them and they like its pretty dam cool... ride safe....... but i did a hack or tip and got a sticker saying 250w and put it on the batteries even tho they are 750w 😂😂😂😂😂
Does look like fun, yes currently not legal but see similar versions of these on my way to work. Think they're be a lot of test to pass before VSA would allow these to be road legal.
you can take it to get msva certified as a l1e electric moped with a speed up to 28mph but there is like 50 pages of things that need to be on the bike for it to pass. it's been done on youtube but not easy by any stretch.
i have spent weeks trying to get to the bottem of this.. i only realised the issue when DVLA contacted ebay to inform me its not road legal! theres a few issues 1 it has a twist throttle (ilegal) no biggy fit a thumb throttle.. 2nd the motor yes you can stick it in peddle asist 1 and potter about under the 15.5 mph limit sticky ground its like saying i only drive my golf GTI around in 1st gear!..
but the big one you need a certificate of conformaty for the uk to reg it and use on public roads and engwe do not issue the docs needed for uk registration..EU yes UK no.., if you are going nuts in a town you will get a tug.. thankfully i live miles from anywhere and can green lane at will...
Great review. Could i ask how tall Nick is? Im 6ft 3 and wondering if it would be comfortable for me
Looks an excellent bit of kit , a lot of fun. Was wondering though, are the headlamps upside-down 🤔 they look like they are pointing upwards
You can adjust the position of them.
Are these just meant to be electric mopeds intended to be registered, MOT'd and insured for road use? I believe e-mopeds are restricted to a 4KW motor and 28mph.
If so, would you consider doing a video about the whole process of making one of these ebikes road legal?

@@thenuttypuffer cheers for the info.
My M20 makes a slight rattling noise in P1 does anyone else get that from the motor/hub?
Nice bike
Just got mine today cant figure out how to get it onto throttle only mode? Had a little go earlier on and really enjoyed the pedal assist and its really nippy . It cutting out when you stop peddling is really annoying though! Quite cold today(Scotland) so only did 3km hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow and i can get out and figure it out. Got another two coming for my friend and his son ! haha Starting up my own Mod pedal gang !! Which reminders me i need to order my Parker coat! 😂
I’m trying to save like 1000 dollars for it because I have like 200 dollars worth of stuff to sell and my Lectric XP Lite which I like a lot but this thing is just better in looks, speed and range
any tips for 5ft who wants a motobike kinda e bike I have a 2020 Turbo Levo Expert Carbon but im too short for it and love the look of the super 73 and REVV 1
Legally, a moped is defined as a motorcycle with an engine no bigger than 50cc and a maximum speed of 28mph.
Originally, a moped - meaning ‘cross between motor and pedal’ - started out as a very basic motorcycle with pedals. Most mopeds are automatic and they’re usually the first step in learning to ride a motorbike.
You can learn to ride a moped at 16 and as long as you complete your compulsory basic training (CBT) you can ride on public roads with L plates. Bear in mind that your CBT certificate is only valid for two years; so if you want to carry on riding you’ll need to either take your AM moped licence or complete another CBT course.
It will require a DVLA approved number plate, insurance and possibly tax to ride it on a public road.
In the USA would this be considered a street legal e-bike?
@@bruhyeet8625yup mate. USA maximum ebike speed is 28mph and 750w which is what this bike is.
Great info. Just to add that e-mopeds are limited to a 4KW motor (and 28mph as you said).
Also, holders of a full (car) driving licence obtained before 2001 can ride a moped without L plates or taking the CBT.
Did you try actually pedaling it to see if it was possible in a "battery dead" situation? it looks like the seat is way too low and the stance is like riding a horse.
There were a few B-roll shots of pedaling.
When you say 'not road legal' is it deemed to be inherently unsafe for UK roads or could you register and license it as a motorcycle?
I’m super fat and it went 52 mph down a long hill in town. Brakes could not stop the bike will all my walrus blubber at that speed so i ended up stopping when I hit the back of a double decker bus
Where did you get the battery equalizer?
What do you do with bikes after videos? Do they just sit there or are they used
Is this spit kabel for the 2 akkus in the box, please! I´m Österreich
You say about it not being legal; that's not technically true. You can use the computer on it to set it to 'EU legal', i.e.; limit the top speed and power output. So, technically, you couldn't be 'had' for riding it, in the UK, if you had that setting turned on.
i have spent weeks trying to get to the bottem of this.. i only realised the issue when DVLA contacted ebay to inform me its not road legal! theres a few issues 1 it has a twist throttle (ilegal) no biggy fit a thumb throttle.. 2nd the motor yes you can stick it in peddle asist 1 and potter about under the 15.5 mph limit sticky ground its like saying i only drive my golf GTI around in 1st gear!.. but the big one you need a certificate of conformaty for the uk to reg it and use on public roads and engwe do not issue the docs needed for uk registration..EU yes UK no.., i get what you are saying but if you are going nuts in a town you will get a tug.. thankfully i live miles from anywhere and can green lane at will...
Do you get all the tools needed included to be able to build it
Anyone know how wide is the handlebar?? Need to check if fits through the door 😅
Is this 'thing' really just 1299 EUR? (to 1599 with the extra battery). That's crazy!!
You can't get a normal road bike for that price anymore
I bought the 1 battery version for £1050
Yeah - wild isn't it?
Not a legal expert but I believe if you register it as an electric motorbike or moped and pay road tax etc it is then technically road legal. You just cant class it as an ebike in uk law.
I'm just over 6ft, fo you think the size of the bike would be okay for my height?
Motor pacing video on Cade very, very shortly! 😂
Is the bottom bracket off of a kids bike, it looks tiny.
So what is the rider hight max size ?
Same as a jansno x50 bt twice the cost?
You can legally ride them if you essentially treat them as mopeds, you'll need to register and insure them and have done a CBT.
What if you choose to use the pedals
Mine doesn't go over 21 mph and I even have the right settings.
Türkiyeye sipariş vermek isterim ne kadar yurtdışından?
If the speed is under 30 mph it's technically legal in many USA states, BUT.....I would think some places would require licenses to operate and a registration too. Not too sure.
Looks like a great commuter/shopping option if there was a way to mount a carrier. I know there are folks here who don't like seeing these on pathways and trails because of the speed.
Fun video. Send bike to me so you don't get nicked in UK. 😂😂😂
It's a real shame they're so hard to register in the UK.
in the usa this would be classed as a class 3 ebike. so i think they are road legal without any license or insurance there.
They are not legal in the UK?
@@Fabulous_exposition nope. Only 15mph and 250w is allowed.
regarding legality, are they not legal as long as you have a provisional, CBT and register them with the DVLA, insure and tax them etc? They would be classed as mopeds, no?
You couldn't register it with the dvla as you'd need to add a million things onto the bike after you received it. Not worth the hassle when you can just go out and buy a 50cc motorbike for not that much more than this which will already be registered.
@@JudeTheRUclipsPoopersubscribe It all stinks to me. It's like the government are deliberately making the laws around ebikes absurd just to discourage them from becoming a widely adopted form of eco-friendly transport. Anecdotally that seems to be why the authorities don't really seem too keen on policing illegal ebikes, because they don't want to have to back up their ridiculous laws. It's all about discouragement. I say fuck 'em.
@@bokehintheussr5033 Not it's not the "government" making anything illegal, you can buy boatloads of ebikes that are totally fine...
Just not e-waste like this.
Reviews need more info. Do the batteries have any certification, like UL? What is it? What's support like? How fast do they respond to emails/phone calls? Are there dealers in the US? What about parts? How long to get one if something comes busted?
Reviewing bikes from a new company doesn't help the potential customer. I want to know that there's somebody on the other end of that and don't want to find out the hard way. I'd like to see reviewers step up more on that end.
Engwe is UL certified.
Your knees will hurt
Where’s the review?
Can you adjust the seat height on it
nope
Illegal im the UK and Europe. Shame the registrations are so limiting, stupid really. Would be nice to ride legally!
I’ve got a bit of an issue. I’m heavy and a 250w bike just doesn’t do the job. I feel even a 1000w bike would only carry me at 15 mph. Where I live in Shropshire, it’s very hilly and my normal e-bike is just crap. Is there anywhere in uk I can have 5 minutes on one of these before I buy one or am I throwing away my money?
A 1000watt will drive you around no problem.
I don't know your weight of course. But on some bikes you can sit with two people. So some support up to 200 klio.
Also i see other big guys on YT who reach 45 to 50 km p/h. So that is about 32miles p/h.
My dad is 20 stone and my 1000w hub motor mountain bike carries him along at 28mph just fine. With myself on it at 12 stone I get 33mph.
@@petervermeer.4904 it might be interesting to see what a 1000w motor might do in this area. It’s a huge gamble to spend £1500 + on a bike and be disappointed.

is there a speed limiter, and if so can you remove it?
i think it comes limited to 15mph and with the throttle not working. but you can unlock everything as an "off road" mode.
Yes
You are right it is not road legal in the UK, can only be ridden on 'Private Property'. As it would be classed as a motorbike you can't use it on Bridleways either. So, useless really till legislation changes.
Doubt anyone would stop you
@@greg_thomsonespecially if you use the pedals as a normal bike when around in public no one will know otherwise
So a bit of a horror story here. I received my M20 last Friday with a dented fender and a defect in the front fork that makes the bike unrideable! I contacted the company via the service email and had to wait until Monday for a response.
Their response is to make me repair it myself and wait 15-25 business days for the parts!!!
And hidden in their teens is that you can't even return a defective bike without paying $100!!!
Pay 100 to return it and get a refund of the bike cost or a replacement bike?
Can you please update regarding how you resolved this? I was literally on the checkout page today but saw your comment. Hopefully you will respond quick
Should try to run it tubeless. And it needs drop bars, obviously.
Can you get past the restrictive laws if you choose to just use the pedals just as a normal bike
Maybe, and you also had to limit your speed (15.5mph or 25 kmh) .Then if the police stop you, and ask you about the engine, you just say you don't know and good luck
Rumour has it, this particular bike is loosing fans rapidly as there is more things wrong than right with it. The seat hardness & shape is what annoys most people.
That's a quite small detail and easily fixable isn't it ? Just remove the standard one and add a softer and maybe even bigger seat.
That was not "Off road where technically it is allowed to be used" a footpath or bridleway is still a "road" riding a motorised vehicle on a bridleway or footpath simply adds an extra offence, yes in fact it's worse than riding on a road which has vehicular right, the only difference is that you are far less likely to be seen or caught, the only legal place to ride one is on private land with the land owners consent (and I'd make sure you have written consent).
UK plod will love you 🤣😂
you slid the top battery on backwords
"Top notch engineering" if that's possible...
I’m calling the police
Is that a song?
That rear suspension looks like trash. Supporting the whole thing on the one stressed shocked, I bet the rear is sloppy, loose and wobbly.
Does Nick do any work any more? Has he gone full influencer?
fuck damn eu 15mph 250w pedal only rule. or i'd have to buy a €5000 "speed pedelec" with paperwork, registration, insurance, ...
Now wire the batteries in series instead of parallel and watch the thing fly lol.
Would melt the controller.
I never trust a review that repeatedly says motorbike/motorcycle it sounds more like they are scripting than reviewing.
Motorbike?, what kind off motorbike you ride, moped maybe yeah bt definitely not motorbike 😂
Register it with D.V.L.A. and make it road legal , will cost you £300 approximately , plus with a few modifications .
what mods? indicators?
These bikes are all over Ireland. There is a huge grey area about pedal assist and throttle assist here. Some of these things can hit 60kph which puts normal cyclists at risk of being rearended. Personally a licence should be issued for something this powerful. Nice video though Jimmy 👍🇮🇪
If it was easy to register these bikes I would totally get it done.
I'd probably do the same. They do look like fun. 🙂
@JimmidNicholls spark cycles bike can be registered I believe
These are considered bicycles in usa
I disagree , just got one yesterday and it definitely does not have enough power to where it should be registered, top speed is 28 mph and I feel like that’s way to slow to be on the road with cars. I respect your opinion though! Much love.
its not 30mph....
I get 27 on mine :/
😂😂😂
i disagree with the idea of these things having no legal requirements, as many people seem to wish, and I live in the US- San Jose, in particular, where electric moped thingies like this are pretty popular. here ebikes can cruise at 28mph legally.
do we really want beginners and non-cyclists/motorcyclists immediately able to do those speeds without any time to develop safety skills? Most of the riders of these types of things are NOT- SERIOUSLY NOT- experienced cyclists and/or motorcyclists. I know this because i see them pulling bad moves everyday, like riding opposing traffic, or in the sidewalk, with no helmets...
i also ride motorcycles and found the license tests to be very useful for cycling in addition to motorcycling. a couple of the questions on the written test were about bicycle laws too. what downside is there to requiring licensure if the roads are already so dangerous because of idiot cagers?
yeah but the training you have to do in europe to be able to drive 50cc mopped is a joke (i had one when i was 15), on the exam day i've burned a stop sign but still had my "license" (as long as you paid they just give it to you) and in no mean i've learned anything more that what my dad explained to me when i was 6 riding a bike for the first time with him on road.
it's just easy cash for driving school and gouvernement (taxe)
Having license or not doesn’t matter…you see all the idiots in cars?
@@slimdunkin117 true!
Slow and almost useless. Most traffic flows 45 mph in my area. Motorcycles need to be able to keep up with traffic. Electric will never over take gas. Expensive and slow. Just a toy. Even Zeros are not fully usable.
If you're off road but on a public right of way you are still illegal. You can only ride this on your own private land or the private land of someone else with their consent. I think you should try to register it as a moped. if you have a full driving licence you are covered for a moped. You will need tax and insurance too. If we get too many of these things being used illegally it will have a negative impact on the users of legal ebikes and reduce the chances of getting the current ebike legislation improved (to allow more power, speed, throttles etc.).
Is it me or Nic looks really tired without glasses?
beware engwe sent me defective x26 with stuck batt engwes fix was to tell me to pry out batt with screwdriver and sand a brand new ebike 🤪🤯 or to take to shop pay $300 and wait for a check. engwe also asked me to lie via email.
Yup engwe is an awful company as I am finding out myself.
You can't even return the bike for being defective unless you pay them $100, and if they do send you a replacement part, they won't send you another one even if it is also defective.

pointless bike. so few places to legally ride it. I can see it being ridden on bridleways etc. disappointed with this vlog.
The illegal on roads but alowed off-road as far as I'm aware. Are you UK based? Do you know the rules? I tried to work out if it was possible to register it as a modped, tax it, insure it, put plates on it, etc A legit e-motobike that I would use for commuting. But it's IMPOSSIBLE to work out the laws and what you can and can't do. So frustrating. Any knowledge that you have to part with would be appreciated.
@@Jimmidoesstuff I appreciate that you did mention several times about the legality. I’m from the UK, I see these ridden on the road; often flying along bike lanes. My understanding is that off road would only be on green lanes where cars are also allowed, or private land, Is that where you road? I see these bikes being sold and very little is made of where they can be ridden in the literature. Very few people would have access to an environment where these would be legal. Maybe I over reacted to your video, but if the general public see these as bikes, rather than motorbikes; it causes more friction. Look at how the media reported Simon Cowell’s crash on an electric motorbike; it was described as an ebike.
Yes, you could spend thousands of dollars on an eBike ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ and get something much higher quality. However, if you're looking for a basic model to try out eBiking this is a great choice. The assembly is easy as far as bikes go (took about an hour for me to do, I'm not an expert). All tools needed are included. I added the plastic mud guards you see and a more comfortable seat. The other reviews are correct that you're probably going to want a better seat (Giddy Up! Bike Seat is what I got - super comfortable). The battery easily handles a 2-4 hour ride if you add some of your own pedal power. I haven't even gotten it up to top speed yet - it is very fast. Components are not top of the line, but decent for the price and work just fine. It works great on dirt roads and singletrack and pavement although too heavy to do tricks or any serious technical mountain biking. I'm looking forward to using it a lot over the summer. Tons of fun!
