Exerts from a NY Times article by his then friend and editor, A. E. Hotchner, re: Ernest Hemingway's FBI file and his surveillance by the FBI for the last 20 years of his life: "In November I went out West for our annual pheasant shoot and realized how wrong I was. When Ernest and our friend Duke MacMullen met my train at Shoshone, Idaho, for the drive to Ketchum, we did not stop at the bar opposite the station as we usually did because Ernest was anxious to get on the road. I asked why the hurry. “The feds.” “What?” “They tailed us all the way. Ask Duke.” “Well ... there was a car back of us out of Hailey.” “Why are F.B.I. agents pursuing you?” I asked. “It’s the worst hell. The goddamnedest hell. They’ve bugged everything. That’s why we’re using Duke’s car. Mine’s bugged. Everything’s bugged. Can’t use the phone. Mail intercepted."
"On Nov. 30 he was registered under an assumed name in the psychiatric section of St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., where, during December, he was given 11 electric shock treatments. In January he called me from outside his room. He sounded in control, but his voice held a heartiness that didn’t belong there and his delusions had not changed or diminished. His room was bugged, and the phone was tapped. He suspected that one of the interns was a fed. This man, who had stood his ground against charging water buffaloes, who had flown missions over Germany, who had refused to accept the prevailing style of writing but, enduring rejection and poverty, had insisted on writing in his own unique way, this man, my deepest friend, was afraid - afraid that the F.B.I. was after him, that his body was disintegrating, that his friends had turned on him, that living was no longer an option."
"Decades later, in response to a Freedom of Information petition, the F.B.I. released its Hemingway file.
It revealed that beginning in the 1940s J. Edgar Hoover had placed Ernest under surveillance because he was suspicious of Ernest’s activities in Cuba. Over the following years, agents filed reports on him and tapped his phones. The surveillance continued all through his confinement at St. Mary’s Hospital. It is likely that the phone outside his room was tapped after all."
"In the years since, I have tried to reconcile Ernest’s fear of the F.B.I., which I regretfully misjudged, with the reality of the F.B.I. file. I now believe he truly sensed the surveillance, and that it substantially contributed to his anguish and his suicide."

Thanks, Mariel. Great example of how to live. I agree that we can stop destructive cycles and heal them.

I was the good girl ..caretaker...I was the youngest...but I took care of my older siblings and mother. My mother had severe depression...she almost died....she lay in bed with pneumonia...the doctor told her it's your choice to live or die.....we children sat outside her door waiting for her to get out of bed...for days....I pulled a chair up to the stove and cooked cans of cambells soup...or scrambled eggs...(the only thing I knew how to cook)....brought my mom glasses of water...stayed home and my brother and sister went to school....did this for two weeks until my grandparents showed up....they helped for a couple days....but the fear never left me....I then always saw the world in a different light....finally my mother got better...but she was never the same...she left us for two weeks to go on vacation....I was seven years old,my brother 8 my older sister 9...we didn't know what to do....again we sat waiting and waiting...no radio...no tv....no books or anything to do...no toys as we were very poor...no paper or pencils....we just sat there.....finally our grandparents came over....they were appalled my mother had just left us there....they stayed with us for an entire week....and brought us coloring books and crayons,food.....we were extremely grateful.....she was sick of being a mom.....I have never forgiven her for her behavior or for the emotional or physical abuse she denies she did....but the scars never go away....for the abused.....we learn to overcome...but we never forget...its ingrained in our memories....I forgive her weakness....I forgive her inner child...but I will never forgive her actions that caused my depression to shadow my life with such force...everybody says I should be grateful that we had a roof over our heads......WHAT????? Maybe she should of stopped at one child instead of having us three ...children do not ask to be here.......when you decide to have children you support them ....mentally and physically. ....I do and will always take care if my family.....even if the dad's do not....my children are more important then anything in my life...so is there mental and physical wellbeing. ....Thank you Mariel, I never knew your life story.....its so sad...but your a true fighter....a mama bear......and a great actress...peace be with you...😇🙏❤

If you change your way of life and take no alcohol or barbiturate as solution, make Hardcore sports and yoga, take life goals... it is not so hard, i think.

Stop belive everything you see.Just think! Look at her eyes, words, mimics, gestures. She is still " running from crazy" .Not a trace of equilibrium ! I ve never heard her,în and interview, saying: I m my own sanity,I m my own safety...noooo....extreme Physical torments, the man ,...But not her inner self!

Yes, balance, spirituality and connecting with others are all important in mental well-being, but there is a HUGE difference between managing depression/dysthymia and schizophrenia. I think medication is necessary for some individuals, but it should be part of a holistic path to wellness and managing symptoms. Thank you for your openness about your family struggles, though. Your message is helping eradicate the fear and stigma surrounding mental illness.
