I keep meaning to get around to making a video with a tip I learned in it. For now, I will just leave it here in case it can help someone. I am a new driver, so I could have got this wrong. You can let me know.
When I was in training they showed us where we could find the list of state restrictions for how far back your tandems could be. They made it sound like every trip you would need to check the book and make sure you were legal. What I started doing is sliding the tandems all the way forward when I picked up the trailer, unless it was a relay. I would then take it to the nearest scale like that. If the weight checked out I knew I was good to go anywhere in the country. I didn't need to check the book. If the load needed to be adjusted, it was obviously going to be adjusted in the only direction it could move. If I had to adjust the tandems past the first mark on the side for state restrictions, then I would check my route and check the book. Obviously doing it this way meant I always had to be thinking about tail swing, but I also was able to get the trailer through some really tight situations my company sent me to.

I understand in California that the tandems must be locked in a certain spot. That you can get fined for it not being there. 41 feet under a certain hub. Is that the front hub or rear hub?

Yes, that is true. Most companies and experienced Drivers simply set the center line of the "last" axle at '40 from the center of the 5th wheel kingpin. 👍🏾😎🚛

Some trailers have marks on the side for different tandem distances from the kingpin. Other states have restrictions too. At Schneider the book in our door had a page with all those details.

@@C3darCr33k yeah I am with schneider too. I am very new at all this. I have looked in the book and saw that. I am though in 11 western states and California is the only state that has a set distance. I was also told that in high winds to set the tandems all the way back if carrying under 33k to make it more stable. I dud have to drive back last week with a pretty light load from Ohio and fortunately Wyoming wasn't bad. The worst wind happened for me when I almost got to my destination in Nevada. Anyway, I just want to be safe as possible and being inexperienced there is so much to consider let alone the tablet and trip planning. Trying to find a safe place to stop where there is space can be a challenge in certain spots especially when your timing is off and at peak times.
