  • Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, and roughly equidistant between London and Oxford, is the town of High Wycombe, or sometimes referred to as, simply, Wycombe.
Geographically High Wycombe is situated within the Chiltern Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The River Wye runs underneath the town centre, and the town centre in turn is located within a valley in the Chilterns.
The town was first documented as 'Wicumun' in around 970 AD in the Saxon era. It received market borough status in 1222, with a market hall being built later on, in 1476. During Medieval and Tudor times, High Wycombe was a mill town, harnessing the River Wye with water mills which were used to manufacture lace and linen cloth.
Other industries in High Wycombe included paper making and, perhaps the one it is most famous for - chair making. Wycombe was surrounded by beech, elm and ash trees, making it ideally suited for the production of simple chairs for kitchens, servants' quarters and public buildings. Having begun in the 18th century, the chair making industry developed in the Victorian era with several factories springing up across the town. At its peak it is believed that 4,700 chairs per day were manufactured in High Wycombe. Typically they were transported by wagon to London over a 36-hour round trip.
During the Second World War some of High Wycombe's furniture factories were adapted to produce aircraft components. The industry fell into decline around the 1960s, around the same time that the River Wye was culverted underneath the town centre, with two shopping centres popping up in the area, along with various office blocks and multi-storey car parks. There is some noteworthy older architecture in the town - particularly High Wycombe Guildhall just off the high street. This was built in 1757 to replace an older guildhall that was destroyed by a fire. The current building is Grade I listed.
The town is represented in sport by the football team, Wycombe Wanderers, going by the nickname, 'The Chairboys'.

Hello all, back in for my yearly update on this infamous town. I’ve got a new job at roosters grill, located in frog more, next to Dennis’. I’d like to first of start by letting everybody know the rat infestation has gotten worse in this town. My manager makes us close on Sundays to do a weekly ‘rat hunt’. He says we need as many as possible as they are a great substitute for chicken. He also makes us crush up hula hoops and mix them with some unknown liquid, this has a thick consistency and a greyish colour… We then shape the crushed hula hoops to make chips. Many customers have complained our chips taste like hula hoops now but dont complain about the rat flavoured burgers which really does suprise me. If your ever in roosters and get the chicken burger meal, just know your order a grilled rat in between a bun and crushed hula hoops!
    Thanks,

I have been in High Wycombe in the summer 1970. Staying at a family's home in Hazelmere. Unfortunately I could not remember anything to be seen in this video. The only thing I have not forgotten is the name of the little boy of the family I stayed. He was about 2 years old then and his name was Giles. Greetings from Germany.

Hi there, I’ve lived in Wycombe for my whole life (32 years) and I’ve worked in Dennis’ kebab van while during my this time. I can honestly say they did some unthinkable things in that van! It varies from rats being thrown in the fryer and tossed between a burger bun, to Dennis clipping his toenails into the potato chip bag! Absolutely vile, please bring awareness to this #StopDennis #Charlieissuperior

this is true,i worked in Dennis kebab van and toilet for 6 years
, we collected the local rats from highcrest senior school and skinned them and them made fillet burgers from them. we gave it to the homeless to eat since they aren't human beings. don't eat at charlies either tho!

@@lishy5314 hi there, in terms of areas I will recommend Marlow, wooburn Green and surrounding areas. I will avoid areas like Castlefield, Desborough Road... and in term of schools I don't really know because my children were not going to school at the time. All the best!

Who are all these people commenting? I lived and worked there for years. The council got taken over by ethnics, uncontrolled back garden building, drugs, prostitution, just appalling. All the furniture factories gone. And if you come across a person with pale skin they're probably polish. Couldn't wait to leave. Now in the Westcountry, but this is slowly going the same way.
