    I'm betting the pre-painted mis are for newer players to replicate the scheme that is 'supposed' to be on the forcepack for its intended faction. Hopefully there will be an availability for them all unpainted since so few older players use the packs as they are apparently intended XD

    I'm cautiously optimistic on the Source books and the Mechcommander's Handbook. It sounds disturbingly like they're looking at Warhammer for ideas (yearly releases of the General's Handbook) I have been amazed by Catalyst providing free PDF updates though, so hopefully they continue to be player friendly and quarterly updates doesn't start to lean toward constant re-balancing of the game to move product.

    • @bruced648
      @bruced648 7 месяцев назад

      @kryptonianguest1903 brief history;
      Combat Value or CV was introduced in 1994, 10 years into the games existence. this was an attempt to satisfy a small number of players that wanted a "points buy system" for tournament play. (tactical handbook)
      Battle Value or BV was introduced in 1997. this 'fixed' many of the issues that CV system had. even though it cleaned up the points system, very few players were using it.
      the Wizkids clicks system took over for a couple of years in the early 2000s, but the majority of players weren't interested in this version of the game.
      when TOPPS (CGL) took over the game, they made some corrections to the Battle Value system, thus BV2. it's a combination of the 'master unit list' project and the efforts of CGL that the BV2 system become a 'balancing' method.
      what they don't tell you is that the points system is only good for small units. the Lance or star, basically, less than 6 or 7 units per side. once you get to company size and larger, especially with combined arms, artillery and Aerospace units, the BV2 system falls apart.
      most new players come from other games that are built around a points buy mechanism. battletech was developed on the principles of military theory. thus, unit design was never intended to be balanced. most original players were playing campaign style. while tournaments did take place, they weren't the focus, the story was and still is.
      from my 40 years of playing, I've never used any of the points buy systems and I don't think I ever will. it's not necessary.

    • @NRSGuardian
      @NRSGuardian 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@kryptonianguest1903 A grand total of three points cost adjustments in 40 years is a far cry from from the 9+ major adjustments done by GW. Basically, CV was established, because with the introduction of the Clans some sort of points balancing system was deemed necessary, and BV1 and BV2 were established, because of issues found with the preceding system's balancing and due to major revisions in the rules that affected points costs. Also, the Battletech adjustments are done to ensure better balancing, and not to enforce a new meta or force players to buy totally different army compositions. Also, all Battle Values are available for free on the MUL. Catalyst doesn't paywall such things like GW tends to do.

    Great news update, overall. Catalyst has made some good decisions about supporting the game. Now that that BTAGOAC has an established player base, give them the tools to turn matches and skirmishes into battles, and battles into campaigns! The force books are much needed since all factions need an update for Dark Age and IlClan eras concerning force composition. I was amused to note the composition of the first new force pack, since on chat just two nights ago we had agreed that the newer era 'mechs should be represented more. I am excited for a Phoenix Hawk that I don't have yet, but an Atlas II and a Thunder Hawk will make it feel more 3067. It looks like 2024 will be another good year for the game.

    The Force Manuals and Mechcommander book are both exciting. I am surprised that they're doing painted models in such a janky way. Hopefully the remaining 3 boxes will be matched to the Force Manuals. The SLDF box is a little less interesting to me considering the obscurity of the designs, but it is also true that you can justify pretty much any 'mech in pretty much any force if you try.

I think the only two mechs I would want from the SL pack are the T-Hawk and P-Hawk Special. I can see why folks are happy over the Atlas II being plastic. If it’s a faction I do collect that’s nice but will the colours and style match? Doubtful. And if it’s a faction I wasn’t interested in but I like the prepainted one…are they going to give a painting guide so we can do the rest of the lance in the same colours?🤔

    While not a big fan of pre-painted either. At least the first box will have (and this is my guess) it in olive drab and id guess it will be the Orion as it would work as Kerenskys Orion right out of the box. It is a mech people have, and it is a non exclusive design.

    We will have to see where they go with all this. While painting minis is part of the hobby, players already have all the tools available to paint, even a paint kit specifically for BT. Adding in a painted mini, for a major portion of the fanbase, is going to result in reduced sales over time. The quality is very unlikely to look like that picture unless a machine is doing the painting, although it would be hilarious to see clickytech quality painting. The storyline itself seems to have become stale, there's a number of us that are building new storylines at this point such as Resurgence that I am creating. We will have to see what CGL does with their storyline given their various creative decisions in the recent years.

    Repainted miniatures in a box really don't appeal to me, would rather do my own paint schemes granted though its not a bad box set. As for the civil war stuff well wouldn't mind a plastic Thanatos and Uziel and connecting to your vid really want a plastic Salamander. Quarterly releases are a very good idea rather than just all at once. Makes things boom bust for their sales.

    I feel like pre-painted miniatures should be for house army packs since that it does make sense to have prepainted with any modifications for the type who want that to just touch them up or play them as is. We saw with FFG's dominance in the market before covid when they surpassed GW that the market for prepainted miniatures is there, though how much of that is due to most of their games using prepainted ones and how much of that was due to their main lines being Star Wars when that IP was merely in decline rather then full collapse is debatable.
    The point is I can only see that as a good thing, though having a complete separation between the painted and unpainted would be more ideal.

    • @BigRed40TECH

    I've seldom been impressed by pre-painted miniatures of any kind - I'm not an amazing painter but I can do better than the mass-produced crap. But if they're going to do pre-painted, it's an all-or-nothing consideration to me. It's an unnecessary inconvenience to strip or paint over something, and it's quite unlikely they'll offer a scheme I want to follow or duplicate.
    I seriously hope they reconsider this idea.
