While I am overall a big fan of Roland, and use many Roland products in the studio which I am pleased with, like keyboard amplifiers and digital organs, I have found Roland's digital pianos to be rather mediocre to me. They don't inspire or amaze me with realistic, authentic sounds, and the user interface of the RD line in particular is convoluted and difficult to master, in my opinion. While I do not hate Roland's digital pianos, I also do not love them, and so the RD-88 falls into a neutral territory for me.
One truly negative thing I do have to say about the RD-88 is that it has the least consistent volumes of any digital piano I have tried, and recording with it is a nightmare. The piano sounds are whisper quiet, but the EP sounds are considerably louder. It's so extreme that one patch can be recorded just fine, but the very next sound, in the same bank, causes my audio interface to peak like crazy! It gives me very little confidence while recording with the RD-88, and while it might be OK for a live situation, if you plan on doing any recording at all, I'd suggest avoiding the RD-88. It's too difficult to work with.

I believe you are mistaken about the supernatural sound engine. They start with piano samples of each note then add the synthesis. It is not completely synthesized. There is a different sound engine on the pianoV piano that is, and a part of it is used in the RD 2000 but not included on the RD88. Very good review! Thanks

as I now own a RD-88 for some days and already played a lot with it, I wanted to give my feeling of it, as I not agree with you on some points.
About the speakers, I owned a Korg Havian 30 (2x25W speakers) for 4 years, and ofcourse I was a little worried about the RD-88's 2x6W speakers. I use it at home for practising, and really these built-in speakers are surprisingly good. The basses are really good too.
About the menus, I don't agree with you about the "complexity". Most of the common changes are done by pressing a dedicated key and then using the INC and DEC keys. For example to navigate through the sounds of acoustic pianos, just press the PIANO key and you can access all the different pianos with INC and DEC. (from what I remember it's exactly the same way on the P515).
And then on the RD-88 you can do more. Pressing ENTER is used to access a drop-down list of the sounds in each bank, which does not exist on the P515.
To resume I don't find the menus too complicated at all, given all the parameters at disposal. Everything is very well organized, in a logical way.
Now for the quality of the piano sounds, it's totally a matter of taste, totally subjective. For me, I just discovered Roland's Supernatural sounds and I really love them.
That's it. Sure I'm going to keep my RD-88 for a very long time.

For home practicing I agree, the RD-88 speakers are ok, but other keyboards like the P515 have far better speakers which is why I was a bit disappointed. Roland advertises the speakers as being able to be used for monitoring in a live situation but I feel that if you brought one into a room of 30 lively people, you couldn't hear yourself at all.
Perhaps the user interface is a bit subjective, I think Roland's user interfaces are just messy. The text on the screen is tiny, the screen itself is tiny, the buttons are placed in weird spots, they are labeled strangely sometimes, assigning parameters like effects to certain knobs is far more difficult and convoluted than it should be. I found the RD-88, and other Roland products like the RD2000 and even the simpler FP-30, to be quite annoying and cumbersome to use.
I feel like I was being a tad harsh on the RD-88's piano sounds, listening back to the recording. They actually sound pretty nice via the direct line output, but those speakers were affecting the sound and making the music seem distant and tinny when in reality it was rather pleasant. Again, this is why I complained about the speakers. They don't accurately represent the sound you're playing.

Claude, I miss the music rest. If I want to play somewhere with the keyboard on its stand, what solution do I have to mount some music rest on the keyboard? What can I do? Any suggestion? Do you know if Yamaha sustain pedal works on it or do I need to buy a Roland one? I mean the one provided is just terrible 😕
Great review, and your conclusions were spot on. I wanted a lightweight keyboard with 88 weighted keys and built-in speakers, so it fit the bill. But I was generally disappointed with the RD-88.
The sounds are erratic and not up to today's standards. I agree that the organ sounds are good, but I think the fast Leslie speed is just a little too fast.
The built-in speakers are pretty bad. I didn't expect them to be great. No keyboard I've ever played has really great built-in speakers. But these are worse than others.
And yes, the interface is bad. It's hard to navigate. And I can't believe that the real-time controls remain in effect even after you switch patches. Like if you turn up the chorus effect on one patch, it turns it up to that level on every patch that you select after that. And the only way to set all the real-time controls back to their default settings is to turn the keyboard off, then on again, which is ridiculous.
And even the much touted Mainstage interface isn't all that great. Besides just basic USB control, it just shows the name of the Mainstage patch on the display.
But I don't mean to dis it too much. it does the job, and I like that it's lightweight. And its basically like getting an older model RD for like half the price. But I guess I just expected a little more from Roland. Because it's not that expensive, but it's not that cheap either. I think there are much better options out there for the same money.
You can actually change sound without pressing the enter key at first. There are to keys above the two arrow keys which have this funcion.

I'm a pounder so Roland is just across the water from me and I have a stock of nylon hammers than I can install in 5 minutes! Just got a Clavinova Clp 685 and love it as well. many good features on this stage piano, but what i don´t like:
-no music stand for sheets or tablet
-no DIN midi in
-too much height
-external power supply
-miniature stereo line input
-no usb to device to connect midi masterkeyboards (you could easily play some sounds out of the rd88 from a 2nd keyboard even without powersupply)
i´ve had many rolands: jx-3p, jx-8p, rd-600
i still have: rd-300gx, jv-1010, bk-5, pk-5a, fantom-xa, cm-110
i´ll keep waiting for a new stagepiano (probably no roland) and stay with my rd-300gx until some company will develop something i like.

Roland has some very nice keyboards with a great action. I just wish that the support arm of the company had a great action. I bought a Roland RD 88 keyboard and 2 months later it died. I took it to a Roland repair center where it has been for over a month waiting for a part that is coming from Japan. When someone spends this much for a keyboard one would expect the company to keep adequate parts on hand to repair their product.

Is this a good alternative to fp30/fp60? I will mainly use it at home and mostly for piano practicing in my bedroom. I have an upright acoustic piano for my living room. The RD88 has analogue knobs and direct buttons and that is why I got interested in it. I do not like going into menus to select different sounds/options. Does it have the built in rhythms with auto accompaniment? From what I understand, the RD88 has a slightly different key action even though Roland is calling it PH4. Also, it does not have the bluetooth function and the place to put the music stand.
The keyboard action is the most important feature to me as I mostly play classical music.
Honestly, no. It does have built in rhythms, but there is a lot of menu diving involved for nearly every action on the instrument. The action does feel slightly different, a little lighter, but still pretty good. And no, there is no place for a music desk, and that alone would indicate to me it would make a sub-par home practice instrument. This is geared purely for gigging musicians and on-stage work.
If you really want a Roland, the FP30 would be better for home use than the RD88, although it's not perfect either. You select sounds by holding down a button and pressing certain, unlabeled keys, which in my opinion is even more annoying than a menu.
Personally, I prefer the Yamaha P515, in this price category, to anything Roland has to offer. It's built better and has higher quality sounds overall, especially for the acoustic pianos. Also it has a music rest, Bluetooth, and large, high quality speakers. You don't have to go into a menu here unless transposing the keyboard, changing the intonation, or other such features that are rarely used.
Another contender in this price class in my opinion would be the Korg SV2. While it has no speakers, and is a couple hundred dollars more, it has some of the best electric piano sounds I've ever heard in a modern instrument. With absolutely no menus or screens whatsoever, it's all analog style with tactile knobs, and is very intuitive and easy to use, although a tad more complex than its predecessor, the SV1, which is also excellent.
@@ThePianoforever Thanks for the quick and detailed reply. It helps a lot. I did try the Yamaha P series, I believe P45, a few months ago and the key action was a little heavier and springy. The FP30 appeared closer to my acoustic piano though I am not sure. I will investigate the two model you mentioned and see if these two better fit my needs.
@@ThePianoforever FYI, the Roland FP-30 has Bluetooth and it's a totally different ball game when you connect it to Piano Partner 2 app on a phone or tablet! As you probably already know by now, you have tons of controls via the app that are not easily accessible or not at all on the keyboard itself. One of those, is auto accompaniment aka fill in. Do you happen to know whether the rd-88 or any Roland stage piano for that matter, has Auto accompaniment-fill in along with its rhythms?

What a great review .. I went with the fp 60 because of the Bluetooth , but honestly I like the slightly more responsive weight of rd 88 .. I’m a complete beginner to pianos ..
I landed here as the Roland RD-88 is about the only digital piano in stock right now, all others, from every maker, have weeks or months of delivery times.

MikeBristol me too ha ha. Most reviews are done by pro demonstrators who are hoping to sell their keyboard.....so it’s almost a sales pitch. Where as this guy is super critical from a pianist point of view. He’s like the Simon Cowell of reviews...it takes a lot to impress him.

Roland seem to be playing a marketing trick with their description of their PH4 actions.
In fact there are 3 variants:
Lowest: PHA-4 Standard (RD-88)
Mid: PHA-4 Premium
High: PHA-4 Concert
Highest:PHA-50 (RD-2000)
They are allowing descriptions of various products to use “PHA-4 action” to falsely imply that pianos have better quality responses than they do because the word “Standard” can be missed out. The PHA-4 Standard action is flawed, with a clicking sound that has developed in around 20% of their devices after several months of ownership (source Roland owners forum) it’s the cheap device they use to provide escapement.
I’ve owned a ton of Roland stuff over the years, but the RD-88 is to be avoided. It has cheap, wobbly plastic Jack and midi sockets, the audio interface doesn’t recognise iOS (Yamaha keyboards do) ie RD-88 does not have class compliant drivers. The menu/navigation system is a nightmare, and the speakers are a joke. Additionally, Roland have switched from sliders to rotary knobs which are really vunerable to damage and easily snap off when using a transport case (as we all do when gigging).
It is nice and lightweight, but heavily overpriced as Roland have cut so many corners with this. Prices are all dropping worldwide.....for good reason. (From £1065 to £915 in the UK -Dec 2020)

How does the RD-88 compare to Casio PX S3000?
I can't playback Mp3 or Wav files from the USB flash drive. I formatted it on the keyboard, I put the songs in the songs file. The files show up on the screen but when I press play on any song it tells me the file is not playable. Is anybody else having the same problem?
For the piano sound, how many maximum polyphony does it have? and does it have any piano editor to adjust things like string resonance, damper resonance, etc?
I like the piano sounds but the difference between the loudness is pity. When you played two instruments together, in the split mode, did you noticed the loudness? Or not. I couldn’t hear it that clear if they where different or not. You compared the RD-88 with the RD-2000 is it an idea to compare them in a video? I am particularly interested if the resonance really difference. Thank you for sharing and playing.
Great review! Do you know if this piano can be configured through a Roland app, like Piano Partner 2? Would be interesting to see how the user experience compares to the physical configuration interface. It is interesting also how the RD-88 has the same piano action (PHA-4) as the FP-30 but is a bit different at the same time.
No, the rd-88 does not have bluetooth, and thus is not compatible with piano partner 2, which requires Bluetooth (according to Roland's website). I think this is because you are able to configure everything on the keyboard itself and thus don't require piano partner? I'm rather fond of the cheesy filling accompaniment that piano partner 2 and the fp30 gives me... wondering if the rd-88 or other stage pianos have those somewhat cheesy but fun features?
I had more hope for this piano, for it to be an improved RD800, on which I like the keyboard feel more than the RD2000 (although I chose the Kawai ES-8 after further playing and still thinks Yamaha CP4 is a strong contender). The Zen core is a nice possibility, but it seems like Roland stressed this one a little to much for the NAMM2020 and that it would benefit from having some further development before shipping. The form factor and weight is right for a gigging musician though.

This was my last hope for a portable stage piano and a studio midi controller with built-in sounds and speakers, after I found out about the faulty key action of the Casio PS1000 from one of your previous videos. Now I don't have any. :-( Thank you anyways for being brutally honest. :-)
The main issue with this is the volume inconsistency. That can be fixed with a firmware update.
You won't find a perfect instrument. This one and most of the others in this price range are already pretty good.
I'm still not completely clear what exactly zencore is. Is it something one needs to purchase as add-ons? Or are they additional/free sounds that the RD88 already has hidden somewhere?

Looks like an old FP-2, but with pitch wheels? (or is power switch on top now), but probably not made as well. Does it have spit keyboard and sound mixing? 12:30 doesn’t sound artificial to me at all, just brite, like a Young Chang, etc. there are no doubt many brightnesses to choose from, as on earlier iterations.

How difficult is it to play fast one handed repeated notes the way that you can on an acoustic grand? Would a pianist capable of playing the sonata in d minor K141 by Scarlatti be able to pull it off on the rd88?

We are just building out the studio at the present time, but are also in the process of working with a few individuals on projects that will be coming up in the future.
I'm looking for a reasonably priced keyboard that does harpsichord well. I was waiting but you missed demoing it on this vid LOL,, anyways, of all the keyboards you have tried, which one(s) would you say is the best for both sound and action, and if it has good pipe organ , all the better. Dude, I even though I am coming from a totally different branch, different genre of music, I totally love your videos. In my opinion you're nailing the most important thing at the beginning - it's not an instrument for everybody. Because no instrument is good for every person - there are so many factors to consider, it's impossible to point out just one perfect instrument. That's even more of a reason why your reviews are important - they (hopefully) help people make decisions... assuming that the people actually know what they want.
I bought the rd 88, but I can´t find such a compact keyboard stand. wich one did you use?

I never really liked the sound of the Roland. The way you describe it is exactly how I feel about it. Tingy and artificial. The sustain is also pretty short. Even if this one is "modeled", it sounds similar to my Roland Juno 88.

I wonder if for changing tones you can just use the Inc. Dec. buttons instead of having to press enter and then use arrows? I have the RD-700 and the Inc. and Dec. buttons are how you move up and down the tone list. But perhaps they changed it for the RD-88.

Re: Your description - I can kinda understand why you're not too impressed with Roland digital pianos tbh - Roland is, and always has been, an electronic instrument manufacturer... Their digital pianos have always been electronic appropriations of pianos, and they tend to prioritise having a crisp, clear sound out of a PA system over capturing an authentically rich resonant 3 dimensional acoustic grand piano sound.
IMO Rolands work best as stage instruments in a contemporary, pop/rock kind of context, much like the Yamaha CP70/CP80 etc. That's what I use them for... even when the option of using a real grand is there :P
I agree, for the right person, this would make a nice stage piano - it's slim, portable, and doesn't compromise on the action. I just think that certain aspects of it could use improvement, like the user interface, and the plugs in the back which are nearly impossible to see. Also, there's such a huge volume difference between the sounds that it makes recording with it very annoying, especially when changing sounds.

SuperNatural is a hybrid synthesis technique, so they are in fact blended with actual samples and some modeling/synthesis.
Newest Supernatural version (Supernatural Piano modeling) is a pure modeling engine not based on samples. Although looking at the specs, RD-88 seems to be using the older version (Supernatural Piano).

Hi, Could rd-2000's Sympathetic resonance be fixed by patches? if so, they fixed it?
They could do a firmware update. I have a RD-2000 and updated it to ver. 15. from ver. 1.0. With the ver. 1.5 update they give you 7 more V-pianos for a total of 17 v-pianos. I don't know if more sounds were added in other categories though.
I connect my sustain pedal to FC2, but I have to play a note, then press the pedal and the sustain works. But if I press the sustain pedal first then play a note, the sustain doesn't work. Coming from a casio previa piano it works when I press the pedal before I hit the note and the sustain will work. Is this a normal behavior for Rd88?
So if I can get both at similar price, which one, this or P-515?
I will be reviewing the P515 very soon.

I had a SV2-88S ordered for two months, but lost all communication with the national company about two weeks ago when they closed all of their stores. I will be getting one as soon as I can, but I see a lot of price gouging on with this product at the present time.
Walter Wanderley had a very distinctive organ sound. Supposedly a B-3. But no one else on a B-3 sounds like him. It's a great tone, but good luck finding it. Listen to his Rain Forest album.

A cheap little box sustain pedal sadly
I don't need on board speakers. I've always steered clear of purchasing a keyboard that had it's own speakers for fear I could not bypass them.I play live and go directly into a soundboard.
Can someone tell me, on this keyboard, if when I use the output into a soundboard I can shut the speakers off.
I don't need them as monitors because I use in-ears.

James, a couple of questions: Does it have an earphone jack? This would be a suitable practice "piano" when one is on on the road. Is its operating system undateable? I agree that Roland has to work on its operating system interface -- It's a nightmare.
It does have a headphone jack, annoyingly it's in the back of the instrument, and all of the ports in the back are quite poorly labeled, you literally need a flashlight to see what's what. But yes, it would be suitable for a practice piano on the road.

Guys, need your advice about the piano model. Looking for a new portable piano to practice at home (just finished my 3rd year or music school). The only two priorities are the quality of sound and the authentic piano keyboard feel. Basically just like Rd 88 but I don't need any mixing different instrument features. The price range is 1k or a bit more. Shall I go for yamaha p125?
If your price range is a little more than $1k, I'd suggest you take a look at the P515. Here in the states it tends to go for about $1,500 and since it's been out a couple years you might be able to get a deal on a used one. It has one of the most authentic feeling actions in that price point, and some of the best acoustic piano samples in general. Also it has amazing speakers, especially compared to the RD88, but this may not matter if you're playing on headphones.

I owned a Roland FP7 about 10 years ago. Back then, it was in a league of its own. Shame they got left behind!

No, not the speakers, they were not recorded for this video. This instrument has two jacks in the back that allow you to record the audio signal directly from the instrument, no speakers involved with the recording process.

This seems horribly designed. It's got a lot of potentials as sort-of a jack of all trades instrument if Roland has got the user interface right, but this is way too clumsy. An additional rotary knob for selection and swapping the button and knobs on the left would make using it much easier. I'm interested in your opinion on the action of the Yamaha CP88. How similar is it compared to an actual grand? Is not having escapement a big issue? I don't really understand Yamaha's decision to not put escapement (the NWX) in its flagship stage piano.
Need RD88 vs CP88. So much difference price!
This instrument seems like it was rushed to market before all of the glitches were worked out, which has sometimes been a problem with new generations of Roland synthesizers.
