The fact that back in the day, so many people complained about this game's story being so weird and saying things like, and i quote, “writers being high while writing ” forgetting that it all happens in a coma, still makes me facepalm 'till this day, what a underrated master piece this story was...
I also LOVED the fact that you could shift into a car in the middle of a live conversation between the driver and the passenger. Such a high level of immersion! There were hundreds of dialog lines written for this and you never had to listen to one of these twice. So an other totally awesome feature, never done before, never done again but the devs took the risk and were able to execute to absolute perfection!
The story in this game is something that is truly out of mind. An action film like story, hell even driving the cars (Specially from interior view) feels like playing a realistic game or something. This game is also ahead of many modern titles nowadays. I always had fun crashing cars with huge ass buses in the bridge, causing chaos everywhere. And then doing some insane glitches like the bus goes absolutely crazy when you damage it from the back constantly.
A fantastic game, a game that Ubisoft doesn't let you buy anymore. Probably because of licence problems. It's sad though, as this was a great game, unique in it's kind. 2nd person, detailed damage model, physics are almost BeamNG, fun selection of cars to play with. The game basically feels like a toybox filled with cars, part of it thanks to the story.
My favorite thing about the story is the way it balances the fact that nothing Tanner does in the coma has an effect on reality with keeping him relevant. Sure, he doesn't DO anything in the coma, but he does LEARN quite a bit from the TV in his room, and that lets him put together Jericho's plot while everyone else is running around in a panic.
I miss racing games that actually had a lot of charm and innovation to them. DSF was one of them and I can only hope if we see another racing game like this in the future. Great review!!
Undoubtedly one of the greatest racing games of all time. I remember being on the hype train for this game and it vastly exceeded my expectations (which were already very high). A true masterpiece.
This game actually has amazing physics all of the cars are a thrill to drive. And they express having real weight to them! And Split Screen which is rare in itself!
I just started playing this a few days ago and remembered how much I would play this as a kid, it’s just so unique that it’s hard to forget. This, midnight club la and hp2010 were my childhood favourites and it’s sad that nothing has quite reached or exceeded these games despite the insane advances in technology
You put it together well. However i would add that the cockpit camera was one of the best made ever for an arcade experience. Real 900 rotation and countersteering when drifting, and the fluidity of direction change and sense of speed made me play it for longer than i dare to admit haha, it just felt so good just hoonin in ane car
This is still amazing to play today. The driving was so much fun. The escaping coma missions were intense, and the whole game was awesome 👌 masterpiece
I love that little detail where the willpower cost isn't based on the actual price of the car, but rather how Tanner imagines driving each one of the cars themselves (with american cars being the lowest, for obvious reasons).
We're in a stage of racing games right now of "Freedom, but to a fault." Like, giving someone who has never played a piano before a piano, and going "You're free to make music!" Someone who has never played a piano has more "freedom" to make noise than someone who has been a practiced pianist, and has the skills to know what noise is just noise, and what noise is actually pleasant music, this parallel can be applied to new racing games as well. you can do whatever you want in the recent forza games, but unless you have the knowledge and finesse to builld yourself a compelling story, and therefore game, given the VAST sandbox you are presented with, you're left just kinda playing in the sand, not building anything worth playing. You're not a dev, yet here the dev is giving you all the tools to build your game the way you want it, and going "Fine, do it yourself."
I was so addicted to this game. I can not even count how many times I completed the campaign on various Xbox accounts and I am still not bored of it...I loved that the map size got bigger an changed the variety of cars with them. This game is just a vibe and I love it and now that I am older, i appreciate the story and the dialogues with passengers even more. Also the final story got me sweating and I loved watching at all the details when that gas explosion occured (opened car dores because people tried to flie or trash and newspapers on the streets). The details ♥️
Driver San Francisco is an Underrated Masterpiece… That we should not have gotten after Driver 3 but damn am I glad we did! This game didn’t get the love it deserved, hopefully we get a New Driver Game At some point I do miss this Franchise!
This game is one of my favorite of all time. I remember I got it on X360 and it did not expect much, I was not too familiar with Driver series but oh man. The story was great, the controls were very satisfying, the map is sick and the cars selection was superb. I rememeber compliting the whole game and then began to unlock all cars. After that was done, there was still multiplayer and I play a butt load of it on split screen with my mate. A great game for sure!
The thing that lacks in this game in my opinion is more small hidden spots on the map that you can explore after finishing the game, like in burnout paradise, for example. After completing game you eant to take your time and explore the world a little more. And at that point i realised that almost every gas station wasn't accessible in driver sf. And i also wish this game had a better cop chase system
This game was truly a love letter to the 70s car chase films. I still remember the OG Gone In 60 seconds mission. Hard as hell but it was memorable. I picked this game up at a pawn shop years ago best 10 bucks i ever spent. Its one of my top 5 games ever
i pre-ordered it back in the day, it's the only game i've ever pre-ordered. i remember being so hyped about it, having played all of the previous driver games and finally seeing a new driver game with real licensed cars, while still having the dna of the old games. online gameplay was insane too but bad matchmaking killed it very quickly
What I am very impressed about the game is that the performance is surprisingly good the FPS was pretty consistent, around 60 or 50 FPS I think I don't remember my game lagging at all, it was pretty good
Shift mechanics also allowed for one of the missions where instead of 1st or 3rd person view, we played in 2nd person view. THAT is what had blown my mind on the first playthrough
One of my favourite racing games ever beaten only by nfs mw ‘05 and carbon. Replayed this game countless times, did all the side quests and races, played it online and still revisit it sometimes for nostalgia. Everything from the aesthetic to the driving engine i just love and look back to this day. Truly an underappreciated masterpiece.
Ah good old Driver Games. I remember playing the first one in 1999 and I remember beeing so hyped for Driver SF. I will never forget this legendary series.
This game is so underrated. Everyone who's played it loves it. But I feel like not many people played it unfortunately. I really hope we get another Driver game someday, or a remaster of this one at least.
My favourite stuff was the different types of city missions -Car chases -Scaring instructors -Keeping people alive -Stopping bad things from happening -protection missions -that cable tv guy trying to capture wild driving But my Absolute favourite one was the kidnapping city mission, where you legit feel the tension with the kidnapper, the actual fear and horror from the dad and how driving on main roads felt like you were doing the wrong thing (you weren’t allowed to drive on them and you’d feel and hear music that you were doing the wrong thing) I’ll always appreciate this game❤
Loved playing it back in the day, The story felt immersive, The cars were interesting, And i also remember being pretty amazed by the graphics and loving the quality of the cut scenes.
I've heard that The Crew 1 ( and later The Crew 2 as well) should have originally been planned as a sequel to Driver SF. We got a different game but with a good Story nonetheless. I liked TC1 so much I bought the second one and was strongly disappointed, literally only one line in the whole game talking about something that was a part of TC1. The Summit in TC2 is what made me drop it (after getting the Platinum which I must say wasn't hard). Nothing new + Story not worth replaying made it not worth getting better parts or new cars.
@@Hushio-Hero I could definitely see you how the crew would be a sequel to the driver San Francisco. nevertheless, it's still a spiritual successor my eyes.
A minor detail I love as well, not only with the steering wheel degrees, but also the fact that Tanner actually shifts in automatic cars. He actually has animations for center console and column shifters. Better wheel support and a manual transmission option would've been amazing.
The driving physics in this game is amazing, you can see me driving my Murcielago in this game. The plot is put in allot of work and other that? Everything you said about this game was cool.
Driver SF was and still is one of my all time favorite games. Quality car selection, a fun story, and a game the capitalized on the movie car chases of the past. It is so sad it didn’t get the respect it rightfully deserved. Even graphically it has definitely stood the test of time. The damage was far more believable than most titles even.
Something i don't think a lot of people talk about, is the Iconic cover car. When you see a yellow 1970 Dodge Challenger RT 440 with black thin stripes. You think Driver San Francisco.
I remember picking up Driver as a rental from our local german equivalent of blockbuster, and immediately falling in love. I got the deluxe edition right after that, i even have a collectible toy car that came with the game. Driver SF will forever be a part of my childhood, as it was the first game i really fell in love with
I remember seeing this in a store when I was 7. I bugged my mom for it and said she'd buy for my 8th birthday, which she did. I didn't understand how cool the game was until I came back and played it a solid 5 years later and realized just how cool it was. The mission where tanner goes into cardiac arrest is one of my favorite missions in any game
Really impressive overlooked gem of a game. Sad that it didn’t set a benchmark as it should. There exists an old article on Eurogamer with an interview of the developers explaining in great detail the technical challenges they faced with this game, a great read.
this game was literally the perfect springboard that propelled me into the world of cars, it is literally one of the few masterpieces that have been made, to this day I still play it and I do not I regret knowing such an exceptional game. The story really hooks you, as all the events that happen throughout Jericho's quest and story mode, Tanner was a pro when he discovered Jericho's plan, the "building a bomb, is not him, having people thinking that there is a bomb is.... Brilliant?", In that moment i was shocked, and that's why i love this game. The game is like a TV series, from the beginning to the end, it always keeps you wanting not to stop playing, and that's the reason why this game is a complete 100% A MASTERPIECE.
What I love about this game is how they introduced new cars in each chapter while keeping either 3, 4, or 2 cars from previous chapters in the new one. What I also love is how many cars that you’ve never been able to play before, just AI’s in other games, are now playable here. I just loved that and how they brought many underrated cars in the real world (imo) into this game. It really feel’s special in a way. And ofc I love the story. I’ve played this game since I was 4-5 years old and now 16, I still play it. This will always be my fav race car game.
There is one more game in which you can shift your mind between diffrent characters depending on task its called Clive Barker's Jericho (Shooter game). Whole concept was pretty interesting, i will try explain without spoilers... after first mission you are able to swap your mind with other people in your squad which have unique abilities, you also travel back in time backwards, first to world war 2, than medival and so on and so on, to a begining. each era you will be in have completly diffrent enemies etc. Definitly worth checking in this underrated gem.
The "Previously: on Driver San Francisco" mechanic is a mechanic you wouldn't find in any other racing game, that's one of the few things that makes in unique.
Thinking about this game always make me think about how the game is totally unique on its own. It has story that is so extra and yet at the same time is actually genius from narrative stand point. The licensed cars is a nice touch but the balance between the cars you'd see on roads commonly and high-end sports cars makes it click. It's sad that it fell victim to perhaps one of the worst business decisions in gaming, but I'm glad that this game gets recognition. I just wish that I could get my hands on this game to experience it myself.
I definitely enjoy the first person view in this game and I play on keyboard. It feels amazingly drivable and not overwhelming like some other simcade physics
It’s still an amazing unmatched game. My father and I started with the very first Driver so we were excited for this and loved every second of it when Everyone else thought it was wierd. It’s strange how many ppl love it right now.
You forgot to talk about the best mission in the game. This game came the closest to experiencing 'the second person'. You control the car you are following. Fucking epic!
I remember asking for this game in middle school because I wasn't allowed to play gta, and I'm so happy that was so because this is probably one of my favorite games of all time. It's a crime this game is not more easily accessible anymore.
Playing the game with a racing wheel makes it 10x better. I remember I spent hours doing the missions. All the missions were very challenging but always fun. Just downloaded it again today.
I wish this game got a remaster or heck, even a sequel. But with Ubisoft shitting itself financially and with the ongoing recession...I am not holding my breath.
This is one of those games that nails the awesome sense of driving in action movies. also some of the best car physics in any game ever, everything feels truly amazing and fun.
I played the original Driver on PS1 and Driver 2, later 3 and 4 which were also good. But in 2012 Driver San Francisco blown my mind. i don´t have the DVD any more, but after this video, i had to buy und play it again. Thx for this
Great video! I must have played this through 12 times now since release, almost once a year, its the best comfort game and it never gets old. Great unique story and theres always another character to listen to lines of when shifting. Think i rmrmbwr an interview with an old writer last year saying theres was several thousand in car shift characters which is insane
Played this game so much when we got it. I first had the Wii Version (Same name totally different game) but my Dad showed me a Clip of someone getting a Tag of someone in an Online Event (gamemode: Tag) where they shifted into a Ramp truck and the "Tag" drove over the Ramp which made the Ramp player win. We got the game a week later but I didn't have online access back then (wasn't allowed) so I played trough the story. I do still remember struggling close to the endgame with some Race events as the Game got stronger opponents down the line, and it was a really good feeling finally winning. Obviously, when I replayed it a few years later it wasn't that hard. I replayed the game last year as well because I heard of the servers shutting down and I wanted to have this game's Platinum Trophy and so I did. Were more people playing due to them knowing the servers would shut down. Two- Three Years ago no-one was playing online so I couldn't have done it then. Also I like to replay this game every year just because of how good it is, as well as because there is a 'New Game+' option. Newer racing Games don't have this because they know their story is trash.
You should do a review on Driv3r, my favorite installment from the franchise. It has an interesting backstory and how due to circumstances and dates it never reached it’s full potential.

Couldn't agree more
I hope so too!
Undoubtedly one of the greatest racing games of all time. I remember being on the hype train for this game and it vastly exceeded my expectations (which were already very high). A true masterpiece.
Sonic Frontiers

Damn. I was so lucky to be a racing game-loving kid when this came out. This game was an absolute blast & I’ve got so much nostalgia for this game
Same here. I remember when this game was brand spankin’ new. Couldn’t get enough of it.
I quite literally re-downloaded this game yesterday and this gets uploaded! It truly is a groundbreaking game that will forever be held in our hearts.
we have the most superb timing
DRIVER San Francisco
I love that little detail where the willpower cost isn't based on the actual price of the car, but rather how Tanner imagines driving each one of the cars themselves (with american cars being the lowest, for obvious reasons).
We're in a stage of racing games right now of "Freedom, but to a fault."
Like, giving someone who has never played a piano before a piano, and going "You're free to make music!"
Someone who has never played a piano has more "freedom" to make noise than someone who has been a practiced pianist, and has the skills to know what noise is just noise, and what noise is actually pleasant music, this parallel can be applied to new racing games as well. you can do whatever you want in the recent forza games, but unless you have the knowledge and finesse to builld yourself a compelling story, and therefore game, given the VAST sandbox you are presented with, you're left just kinda playing in the sand, not building anything worth playing.
This is one of best racing games I’ve ever played. Wished there were more vehicle mods for this game.
The hours of playing demolition derby with my step mom the years before her passing is why this game stays in my memory
Mose, when you come visit me next, bring driver so we can play the splitscreen please and ty
Thanks for this very in depth review of one of the best driving games out there.
YOU'RE WELCOME!!!!
What I am very impressed about the game is that the performance is surprisingly good
the FPS was pretty consistent, around 60 or 50 FPS I think
I don't remember my game lagging at all, it was pretty good
Amazing game, used to play it to death back when i had it for the ps3, sadly broke the disk in half, but my love for the game will never break in half
Shift mechanics also allowed for one of the missions where instead of 1st or 3rd person view, we played in 2nd person view. THAT is what had blown my mind on the first playthrough
I saw this today! Somebody finally appreciates this game as much as I do!
This game is ABSOLUTELY amazing!
I will never forget this legendary series.
that's so nice!
I'm so old I remember when Racing Games actually strived for a good campaign story
FOR REALLLLLLL
This game is so underrated. Everyone who's played it loves it. But I feel like not many people played it unfortunately.
I really hope we get another Driver game someday, or a remaster of this one at least.
So happy you made this video! My all-time favorite racing game for sure! Thank you!
Mine too!
No problem!
@@UltraViolet_Moses For real ?? I wanted to ask but thought you would have mentioned in the video 🙂
even tho I play the crew 2 these days I never forget about driver franchise cuz tanner is my favorite character between all games and movies
My favourite stuff was the different types of city missions
-Car chases
-Scaring instructors
-Keeping people alive
-Stopping bad things from happening
-protection missions
-that cable tv guy trying to capture wild driving
But my Absolute favourite one was the kidnapping city mission, where you legit feel the tension with the kidnapper, the actual fear and horror from the dad and how driving on main roads felt like you were doing the wrong thing (you weren’t allowed to drive on them and you’d feel and hear music that you were doing the wrong thing)
I’ll always appreciate this game❤
YOU'RE NOT LISTENING
Loved playing it back in the day,
The story felt immersive, The cars were interesting, And i also remember being pretty amazed by the graphics and loving the quality of the cut scenes.
Couldn't agree more!
Dang burnout and driver went out on a high notes I’m really glad that happen the legacy’s will inspire many indie racing games in the future
Not going to lie, this and the crew 1 got to be one of my favorite racing games. mainly because of the stories.
Man I love the crew 1 so much I already left like 3 comments/replies under this video mentioning it.
Honestly, this game is a gem that shows off the full potential of open worlds, racing games, and video game stories.
this is a lian...
A minor detail I love as well, not only with the steering wheel degrees, but also the fact that Tanner actually shifts in automatic cars. He actually has animations for center console and column shifters.
Better wheel support and a manual transmission option would've been amazing.
I was playing it a couple weeks ago for the memories and it’s freaking ridiculous how fantastic this game is.
Was it good? - Froot Chronicles

Another really cool thing about this game is that it plays really well with a wheel!

The game is like a TV series, from the beginning to the end, it always keeps you wanting not to stop playing, and that's the reason why this game is a complete 100% A MASTERPIECE.
on par with breaking bad (gritty)
Can't wait to watch the official live action adaptation of Driver this year on Binge! #ReDriver
Produced by Binge, not released yet!
Another banger as per usual my man. I don’t know how I’ve never heard of this game! It’s now gonna be my new favorite
I am SHOCKED to see that the game FINALLY got some attention!
The mechanic in the last mission that allows you to control two cars at the same time is just mind blowing and unique.

Five Nights at Freddys: Security Breach
The "Previously: on Driver San Francisco" mechanic is a mechanic you wouldn't find in any other racing game, that's one of the few things that makes in unique.
This game still has one of the best car lists of all time. So much variaty, and a cockpit view for every car. I loved playing this game!
Couldn't agree more!
Masterful Writing my friend, you bring passion to every word you say.
I definitely enjoy the first person view in this game and I play on keyboard. It feels amazingly drivable and not overwhelming like some other simcade physics

I logged so manny hours on this game back in the day! I had so much fun just driving around.
It’s still an amazing unmatched game. My father and I started with the very first Driver so we were excited for this and loved every second of it when Everyone else thought it was wierd. It’s strange how many ppl love it right now.
I love this game to death, great video!!
But with Ubisoft shitting itself financially and with the ongoing recession...I am not holding my breath.
the only regret i have is passing by it at game store years ago thinking it was just a generic racing game

This is one of those games that nails the awesome sense of driving in action movies. also some of the best car physics in any game ever, everything feels truly amazing and fun.

Driver, my most beloved Series 🥺 Driver was my first game as kid on my PSX… damn, it‘s been a long ride since 🥲
Great video! I must have played this through 12 times now since release, almost once a year, its the best comfort game and it never gets old. Great unique story and theres always another character to listen to lines of when shifting. Think i rmrmbwr an interview with an old writer last year saying theres was several thousand in car shift characters which is insane
It really is!
You're a lifesaver. (For real though the Xenoblade series is phenomenal and holds such a special place in my heart).
LETS GOOOOOOOO, WE'RE MAKING HIM REVIEW IT SOMEDAY
Newer racing Games don't have this because they know their story is trash.
ok
Another amazing mission is where you are driving the car in front of your perspective, such an underrated game
You should do a review on Driv3r, my favorite installment from the franchise. It has an interesting backstory and how due to circumstances and dates it never reached it’s full potential.

the soundtrack was good shit too. the music during the last section once you're out of the coma was perfect.
