Live in a small club you COULD feel her spirit. I saw her at King Pleasure's (Ann Arbor, MI) way back and she was fantastic. King Pleasure's didn't last long, but my memory of that night lives has. I swear, her voice and her bands instruments spoke to each other. It was something else.
I was playing a gig with Esther at a club in Detroit. She had Pistol Allen, James Jamerson, Eddie Willlis and myself in the band. I was a young 26 year old white boy from London and completely blown away working with the Tamla Motown rhythm section. Just to cap it all Esther took me to Aretha Franlkin's house after the first night. The Queen was not in residence but her sister Carolyn was and she played Esther this song which we subsequently recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio as a track on the album Black Eyed Blues.
@@madkeysfilms thx, moments and memories to cherish. Thx for sharing. Must also have been something to work with the guys who formed the Funk Brothers and can be heard on so many hits of Motown... I often wondered how she was to work with. I think she was somebody that knew exactly what she wanted from her band...
I love this song so much. Thank you so very much for this. I have been looking for this song for years. I cried like a baby when I listened to it. I have been in love with a man that lives 3,000 miles away from me for the last 10 years. I sent him this son 10 years ago. There are other singers performing this not no one can sing it like Esther Phillips.
Esther Phillips was revolutionary and transgressive like the great artists of the world. She imbued all her interpretations with an extraordinary unmatched voice and eloquent emotional gusto. I would love to see on video her "Native New Yorker" interpretation.
Thanks for sharing this rare live gem ... absolutely devastating. Probably Esther's most heartbreaking ballad and the sad thought that she would have to leave us not long after this performance only adds to the emotional turmoil it causes.
I believe this was recorded in Manchester during her 1982 visit to the UK, which included performances at a club called The Canteen in Covent Garden, one of which which I attended on 10 July.
Solo pensaba en esas personas que están sentadas ahí en ese lugar ,escuchando a Esther Philips que regalo de Dios , que afortunados ,Dios mío ,te amo Philips 👋👋👋👋👋
I'd love to know where that white kid bass player with the mullet is now and how much he thinks about those shows he did once upon a time with Esther Phillips and how often he watches this video and whether he still plays professionally or just when he can and how he felt when Esther Phillips died.
Darlene, thanks for the remarks. If you mean Black Eyed Blues, then yes it has been issued on cd. In fact I think just about all her albums are on cd now.

She was nothing but an amazing and talented vocalist - such phrasing and vocal tone - could really lay down a story w/soul. Love her.

2 years before her death on August 7, 1984.
