i'm experimenting with the Cort A6 right now, a "cheap" neck through 6 string bass. ( 800-900 euro range). it has bartolini pickup and even tho its on the cheaper chinese side, apparently they are similar to those in MTD. i switch the cheap preamp for a Delano sonar ( 3 band eq with mid swich and push pull active/passive ) and its really great now. it can do a lot of sound, because the pickup are in a similar position as the ken smith, you can eq it to sound really close to one. and because the pickup are split coil, solo the front one, put some flatwound, a bit of eq ( to tame the brightness) and now you sound like Pino.
i was a jazz bass type player for many years but i had so many problem with that type of instrument. the scooped sound that don't cut well in some band, demanding to mess with the amp-eq between each music, the 60s cycle hum that forbid me to solo pickups etc. plus all my jazz bass have a ski-jump and some neck issue. modern instrument with neck though, with humbucker/split coil seem to be more "solid" in a live setting where you don't know if the light, electricity, weather conditiion will mess everything. i only use my jazz bass in a controlled environment aka my home studio.

For me, while i tryn to help new people buying bass
I always tells them to hear a lot of basses with good speaker/headphones on youtube
    Mainly
    P bass
    J bass
    PJ
    Musicman
    Double Humbucker
    Maybe some soapbars
And if they dont have preference, or like a lot of it, or didnt want to bother
I will just tell them to buy active(with passive switch) soapbars / double Humbucker
Cause in my experience, double humbucker is just way too versatile and easy to deal with for beginner, blend pot is easier than saperate volume, no buzz from single coil, a really big and easy to cut thru sound (which helps a lot for beginners to hear it)

As a bass player, you need a Crate Electra solid body, an Hofner hollow body , a fretless, and a 5 string. You could get a jaguar short scale and a regular scale Hondo II bass too. You should try out a jazz bass and Precision bass. Try out a VOX bass and a Made in Japan Westone basses. The most important thing is to learn how to read bass charts, with chord progressions and also written out bass clef manuscript. Bass players do not have to know how to solo and improvise over a set of chord changes, but it helps if you do know how.Your job is to lay it down for the other instruments, like Saxophones, guitars, trumpet and organ

I think selecting a bass depends on your style of music, your budget, what feels comfortable and sounds good. Amps are to be considered as well. I love 5's, for that B-string. I've had a few basses, ("late-night" pandemic purchases...bad move!), and sold them because they didn't give me what I was looking for, so I ALWAYS go back to my two Fender Jazz Deluxe 5's (2006 & 2011), and I LOVE them, for most genres and styles that I play. Last, good technique with your finger, thumb or pick is essential too.

I like the 6 string best. I played a Peavey Cirrus 5 string for over 20+ yr.A couple of years ago just to have I got a Squier Jazz 4, for a year it was my favorite because I never really played a 4 string long before I jumped to 5. Unfortunately the Squier Jazz had a sound my friends that had Fenders were amazed that it sounded better than theirs. But I didn't like the restrictions I had on the 4 and wanted a little more than the 5.Since I no longer play with a gospel group,I decided to try a 6 string. For 2 yrs now I've been in love with my ESP LTD 6 string. I now want to excel so I know I must learn some theory and other things you offer. Need a link to check out your courses. Sorry so long 😊😊😊 My next baby is going to be a 70's Squier Precision, to complete my collection and I'll have every bass I ever wanted....😁😁😁😁

If I had to pick I would pick the first two basses. I prefer them in the order 2,1,4,3 I like the Ibanez SR sound. I played around with different brands at the store before and like that meaty sound. The 1st bass had some of the tone I like but was more smooth when you went up. The 3rd bass had a more round tone. I would have chose the last bass over the 1st one but something more about the tone I liked. That 2nd bass would probably be my go to for sound but then would have to touch each bass to be sure.

Best bass sound for me (that I grew up listening to) is Reggie Parker, Reggie Young and Fred Hammond. Smith and Jazz Style 5 string is my favorite sound for gospel.

I like the tone of your Fender, but personally I've been an Ibanez guy for quite some time now (I'm jonesying for the 6-string multi-scale bass by them) so you know, different beast with the preamp and active pickups. Might just be me though, as I've always been a rock player and heavy metal listener. I've also thought of looking into a Fender-style bass, but I'm a bit picky as I prefer to avoid the neck dive of the standard Fenders that I've played (my left wrist has a titanium plate and thus fighting with a diving neck isn't my favorite thing). Lots of good info in here my friend, keep it up. ;)

Learning traditional gospel music is well and great to a point, however an artist in my opinion needs be awesome with and on any instrument you play,by holding down the low end tight and right, you should be able do that with a four string Rouge😏😂 just jokiNg. When it come to basses options are necessary, we are different as bassist we all need variety A 5string my be the motts for you, sometime something as basic as the right strings or the right pedal adjustments make the magic flow 😎

My first bass was a 4 string cheap Stagg jazz-ish bass, but I find 4 string limits me and does not allow to go lower than E without detuning. 5 string jazz bass is where I am at home, and my main bass is Sire V7 5 string ash maple. I played a 6 string and I found little to no use for C string because I am a traditional bass player, I do not do flashy things with my instrument and 6 string bass makes slapping more difficult for me. I would like to have another bass, just a different sound color. Should I go with 5 bass with active humbuckers ? Should I go for a 4 string precision and string it with flatwounds because I have never played an instrument like it ? Maybe a 6 and add a Low F sharp instead of High C to get even more extended low range and to go an octave below traditional 4 string bass ?
