Yasser is not only a grandmaster. He is an outstanding explaining grandmaster. With his lessons I dramatically improved my strategy. Yasser, a rookie says I love you !
But he is speaking extremely slowly, building too long and sophisticated phrases. All this video could last around 15 minutes if spoken in normal tempo and much less of unnesessary phrases
My first reaction upon watching this lecture was that he talked way too slowly and his points were too simple. But then I realize that that is precisely what makes him such a singularly effective chess educator, even for non-beginners. Will definitely be watching more of his lessons!
As a novice player, holy crap did I learn a lot watching this. I'll probably forget 80% of it right away and have to watch again, but still. This stuff is golden.
I wanna fall asleep listening to this guy. I've seen his games, I knew his face, but I never heard him speak. Love with his voice and demeanour. What a nice man, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
Great educator, doesn't leave any thing hanging in your mind. Wish I had this stuff when i was a little younger! Came from a poor background, never had the chance to play agains't anyone at chess (in the early 90s). Rediscovered chess during the pandemic. I'm glad I did.
Yasser Seirawan is without doubt one of the greatest. he did did not win any world championship, but he always competed with the best of every generation. we are very lucky to have his classes, such good quality content.
Very informative lecture, especially the point about dismantling white's position after the move f3 with pawn to d5. Previously I would find myself stumped when facing this move since whites center appears so solid.
The video ended too soon unfortunately. The critical line after 9...d5 is the one we missed: 10. Bxd5 Nxd5; 11. ed Nb4; 12. Nde2, although black has been scoring fairly well in this lately after 12...e6.
Don't get me wrong, I am far from GM but the thing on 17:30 does not seem to be a good idea. If ...Ng4 Nxc3-bxc (threatening to take queen so black has to recapture) followed by Bd4. And now we wanna trade bishops and leave black with weak black squares (either black moves knight back and loses tempo or closes it with e5 (f6 is not even considered I guess) and his bishop is not good anymore). And if the knight stays at g4 for some reason he is not threatening anything and will be kicked with tempo f3 at any moment. Does it seem logical?
If there's nothing better, I think black is doing fine after Nf6 in this variation. White played Qd2 with plans to castle queen-side and/or trade bishops. Now black has a semi-open g-file and white's bishop is no longer in battery with the queen. Development is still even because both players had to move the king's knight 3 times.
i was playing chess and i played some random opening moves and it said hyperaccelerated dragon pterodactyle something and i just had to find out what i had just done.
I don't understand why he didn't talk about getting the light square bishop out sooner for white !?! so you can go for that quick kingside castle for white..
Guys, I didn't understand one part: when you push the black pawn to a4 to harass the bishop, can bishop just take it and stay protected by knight in c3? Am I missing something? 🙄
I just have a question, what if when the white has their 2 knights developed and you got the bishop on the diagnol whites next move is to try and trade blacks knight with their white bishop, how do you respond, do you allow the trade or is there a trick... He doesnt mention it so i think its a bad idea but it still catches me off guard in a lot of games
17:06 I think he got the position confused. Ng4 isnt that good after white takes on c6, bxc6, and then plays bishop to d4, Its better to castle first as black and then if they castle to play ng4
After nf6 white can play Qd2 and if you atack the bishop white can trade nights and stockfish on low depth even want to capture with the pawn d pawn. If you capture with b pawn, white can atack your black bishop on e4 and stockfish at least see this at lower depth with +0.34. So this isnt so clear for me, maybe with longer thinking times it will change. Proble withh al the openings below Elo 1800 is they never happen unless two players play the ein lines.
Warning: At 34:28, You can't follow that move up with a4... because then it goes Nxc6, bxc6, Nxb6... and then anything black does is trouble. You have to go Nxd5 asap instead of a4 to stop the eventual Nxb6 protected by the discovered protection of the e3 bishop. IMPORTANT: I am not posting to this to sound like I know much about chess. I don't, and Yasser is my hero. I would kill to get one of my Winning Chess books signed by him. I just happened to have lichess open alongside this video and this inaccuracy reared its ugly head. It doesn't change the value of this video, though. As always, Yasser is teaching us principles and chess thinking. He's sooooo awesome!!!! I just figured I'd make a note of this for anyone watching.
At 48:00, I thought, given the position,1. .... Qa5 would've been good. Set's up a discovery double check, winning a rook. If 2. Nc3, the plan fails, unless 2. .... Bf5 is played.
He neither discussed 10.Bxd5 nor 10.exd5 after minute 34. He mentions that the opponent has 3 moves to take, but only analyzes the one that chess databases clearly indicate as equivalent to a blunder, as white seems to have zero winning percentages after 10.Nxd5 in advanced games. Unfortunately, 10.Bxd5 creates a 2:1 winning ratio for white, because it allows the knight that's now not gone a nasty in-between check on f6 later. I really enjoy his lessons, but it's not the first time he conveniently leaves out the best opponent moves at a critical junction, and still claims things like "as it turns out, after the move f3 white ends up with serious issues" ... which apparently is only true if white counters 9. ... d5 with one of the worst possible counters ... :(
This guy has got to be the sweetest, cheeriest Grandmaster I've ever seen.

I'm getting into the hyper dragon and this is gold. Every move is explained slowly. So good.
A wonderful teaching style and so much knowledge
34:49 why doesn't white play 11.Nxc6, bxc6 12.Sb6 after a5?
What is Sb6?
If it's Nb6, simply axb6.
If it's Bb6, then Qd6 with plans of cxd5 with a discovery attack of the queen to the b6 bishop.
Excellent lecture.

great lecture...too bad a lot of it is off screen and not visible
Never felt like he was taking a class in another place in a different point of time!
34:49 why doesn't white play Nxc6 after a5?
Lee Chang exactly. White is actually winning after he captures on c6 and then moves his knight to b6 after black recaptures with pawn.
Tiger Lily then a pawn takes your bishop? Wot

Great lesson, learned loads. Thanks!😁

How come at 16:00 white can't take on c6 then play e5? Doesn't white just win a pawn at the end

I dont think hes gonna awnser lol its been 4 years

What do you do at 34:10 if e4 takes d5 instead of the Knight taking it?
You play Knight to b4 and you attack it back with one more force
Don't get me wrong, I am far from GM but the thing on 17:30 does not seem to be a good idea. If ...Ng4 Nxc3-bxc (threatening to take queen so black has to recapture) followed by Bd4. Not every GM at his level shares hints . Yasser is one of the best
22:54 what is the best move to play against pawn e5 to e6? It looks intimidating, especially with the white rook opposite your queen.
you just play d5, a move that you were dreaming of. You threat e6, and you get a dream position.
34:15 He only looked at one of the possibilities?
The big question is now: What does white play instead of f3??
i was playing chess and i played some random opening moves and it said hyperaccelerated dragon pterodactyle something and i just had to find out what i had just done.
I don't understand why he didn't talk about getting the light square bishop out sooner for white !?! so you can go for that quick kingside castle for white..

What happens if after black plays d5, white responds with exd5?
what if white never moves the bishop to b3 but instead plays Nd5?
