To all three of you - THANK YOU so much from the bottom of my heart. I'm sitting here in Minnesota watching this video and my heart is jumping for joy with the quality of the lessons that you are producing. Wishing you all a blessed day!
Hi from Spain. You guys are so nice. Im 71 and just starting and cannot tune my tenor Uk, yet. But I so love the way you teach. Sure hope I get to this elevel before I die haha!
great tip from the guy in the middle about keeping the thumb above the strings and not letting the whole hand fall below. that made a big difference for me in keeping up! thanks!
Cool! I found myself naturally anchoring my pinky finger, like you would finger picking, to keep my fingers from straying too far up, down or away. That helped with the efficiency and economy of movement.
omygosh!!!! so i was playing around with my uke and since i played the flute, I just started playing the B scale and finding out what note comes next. This vid incredibly helped me know what to do now: -Knowing the scales -Teaching myself the strumming > Also I wanna thank Glinzy(sorry for spelling that wrong) when he said something about the strumming pattern how your thumb tends to go down below the strings. Thank you! Thanks so much Mr. H!! :D
Thank you, Ana! You're absolutely right about style of teaching and how it affects those wanting to learn. That's how a dummy like me was able to make it. Keep strumming :)
Hi Kimo! Id just like to say Thank you so much for creating and posting your videos! They are so informative and you explain and set goals at a perfect pace - For me anyway! I am a complete beginner to the Uke but I have played the trumpet for many years - Stringed instruments were always a bit scary to me! I am however getting on marvelously thanks to your vids : ) I love learning this wonderful instrument! All the best Leigh
Aloha, Leigh! Thanks so much for your feedback on our videos. They're fun to do and I do hope they continue to be useful to you. Please do let me know if there is anything I can do to help nourish your interest in ukulele. I'd love to help. Your trumpet experience will be a definite positive factor in learning to play ukulele. Best Regards, Kimo
Hi Kimo, I'm a new ukulele player & the FB ukulele group I'm a member of was watching your recent video with the ukulele made from railroad ties. We were amazed by your right hand technique & I've been looking through your videos ever since trying to grasp what you do. I think this is the pattern you use on Aura Lee/Love Me Tender, but I don't quite get it. On the melody note, the Up with the index finger, do you only play the melody note? And in Aura Lee, do the down strums hit most of the strings, or only the g & C. Also, do you generally play a low g of high g tuning. Anyway, thanks for the videos, your playing is really inspirational.
Thanks, Rc, for your inquiry and interest in ukulele. There's a lot you've addressed so I'll try to keep things brief. The strum pattern you mention is a triplet produced first by a downstroke of the forefinger, a downstroke of the thumb and then an upstroke of the forefinger which repositions your right hand for another triplet. I always play a low G instrument because I prefer that sound and low G tuning provides me much more range. The melody of a huge majority of songs I play is assigned to an upstroke of the forefinger. Down strums in Aura Lee do not "aim" for specific strings. It is simply a brushing down thumb movement that is used to provide harmony to the melody.
Thank you, Frank Judnich!!!!! You and I are in complete agreement in terms of style in combining melody and harmony. Please do let me know if I can help you. Aloha, Kimo
Aloha Kimo. While this video demonstrates a Finger-up, Finger-down, Thumb-down pattern, in another video you demo a Finger-down, Thumb-down, Finger-up pattern. Are these two totally interchangeable (i.e. each one is usable with any song), or does the particular song dictate which one to use ? (I hope that makes sense). And thank you for the wonderful instruction you provide. John
John Gleeson Hello, John!!! Thank you for your inquiry and interest in ukulele. Yours is a great question and the short answer is both patterns are indeed interchangeable in whatever way the PLAYER chooses. In terms of pattern, BOTH of these are exactly the same. What the player decides is whether the downbeat of the measure will be finger up or finger down. Let me know if this helps or if I need do a better job explaining it.
