      Looks like they lost

    Alot of people around the world still have a mentality that Vietnam is very poor and ruin by war until they visited the country. The truth is Vietnam is not a country like most people think its used to be. The country is not developed yet but definitely not a third world country and still has a long way with alot of issue to do but the future look great and bright.

    Saigon is the old name of the city, later named after President Ho Chi Minh, because it is associated with the campaign to liberate the South and reunify the country, the campaign named after Ho Chi Minh.
    Our President Ho Chi Minh entered the South only once, then he boarded the Amiral Latouche Tréville in 1911 to travel the world to find the way to national liberation.
    Since then, Ho Chi Minh did not have the opportunity to go to the South. He missed the South very much, so we changed the name Saigon to Ho Chi Minh in memory of our great President Ho Chi Minh.

    There’s another route from Phan Thiet/ Mui Ne to Saigon, which runs along the coast, if you want to avoid the National Highway. You follow the coastal road, with much much less traffic and way more nice views, and arrive at Vung Tau, a nice beach resort town. From Vung Tau, you take the ferry to Can Gio, and then cross the bio-reserve area back to the city via South Saigon. This route takes a little more time, but gives you more leisure.

My opinion only 🫢😊 He needs a vacation himself I think and reset perhaps🫢🙏🏻

    That is what is amazing about Asia - you have the ancient culture, beaches, islands, mountains, jungles in the country side, but then you also have very cosmopolitan cities that are bustling with activity and have all of the Western brands and amenities you could want. As Asia continues to get richer, more and more cities are becoming very modernized like this and now it's not uncommon to see Ferraris and Lambos on the street.

    Hanoi also has a lot of modern areas like Saigon, but you have to get out of the old Quarter Paddy! It's called the OLD quarter for a reason :) It's probably the least attractive and least modern part of Hanoi. (Though tourists love it cause I guess it does not look western)

    • @patwoj8621
      @patwoj8621 Год назад +7

      Yep I prefer Hanoi to Saigon. More manageable, nicer architecture, nice old quarter and just have to walk out a little bit for a change of scenery.

      The Old Quarter of Hanoi- Hoan Kiem District and the Political Area of Ba Dinh District are not allowed to build tall buildings for architectural and security reasons for heads of state. Just out there is a modern city with tall buildings . Ho Chi Minh City is a richer economic center than Hanoi capital, but the number of high-rise buildings and transport infrastructure cannot match Hanoi.

    • @Lol-ok9kl
      @Lol-ok9kl Год назад

      What do you mean least attractive? It’s not modern but it’s history and the Hanoian government is making a good decision to preserve it instead of building over it. Just like in Paris, nobody thinks of La Defence when thinking about Paris

      @janchxxheonczsekk6412 Год назад +7

      This is so true. Hanoi has one metro line while Saigon is still building one. Hanoi also has more freeways and high rise skyscrapers. Plus many of Vietnam's largest companies are headquarter in Hanoi.
      Most tourist tend to stick to the central and Old Quarter so all they see is old and narrow streets. Little do they know if they go into the suburbs a bit is where modern Hanoi with its gleaming skyscrapers everywhere. It's just as modern as Saigon is.

    there are several interesting historical places in the city so I hope you had a chance to visit them as well. The former presidential palace is really nice. There's a city museum that I thought was quite well done. And the war museum was quite thought-provoking. That long promenade from city hall down to the river you visited is such a neat place - between the fountains that all of the kids love to play in and families just out and about I felt like it was really wholesome. I was there about 3.5 years ago and it's grown quite a bit even since then

    The tunnels at Cu Chi that the tourists try out have been enlarged to fit large westeners but as you found out, it is still hard going. I worked with an ex Australian Army Captain who was selected as a "Tunnel Rat" because of his small size. Those guys were "Sappers" or engineers who could disable booby traps and explosive devices inside the tunnels. Very, very brave men!

    Personally, I thought the hostel 2Passports 1Dream found in Da Lat was WAY nicer. I wish you'd have stayed at that place when you were in Da Lat....and I think it was almost half the price you paid for the one in HCMC. Really wish you'd do a bit more research as you continue your journey as comparison of one extremely modern part of HCMC to that of the Old Quarter of Hanoi isn't correct. One district/area does not a city make...and well, it's called the OLD Quarter for a reason.

    Wow Paddy.
    I am VERY impressed that you did not get wedged stuck in the Cu Chi tunnels like I did back in 2019. Great tour, but at a certain point I had to slither low to the ground in order to get through the tunnel. I reached a point where I became stuck and I had to crawl like a snake. At this point, I lost visual sight of my tour group and I was alone. It was hot and humid and I was sweating like a pig. The only way for me to progress was to slither like a snake and eventually I reached the end of the tunnel into a bunker and when I tried to stand up - I fainted, and when I came to again, my guide had me in an upright sitting down position, with some sweet juice to drink. The rest of my group continued in the tunnels and I bailed and exited - it was the best choice.
    Anyway, I truly enjoyed it and realized that those tunnels were built for a Vietnamese body type structure and NOT for someone from the West - which was probably very smart of them from a war strategic point of view.

    You actually can also walk in the pavement in Hanoi, and yes, Saigon is a little more modern than Hanoi, but not that much. It seems you have only spent time at the old quarter in Hanoi - which of course has old and short buildings, small roads, etc. While in other districts, there are tons of skyscrapers and more modern like Saigon. On the other hand, you also seem to spend time in district 1 which is the most modern district of Saigon.

    Crazy to think Jackie is still guiding tours to the tunnels. He was the guide when I was there in2005. He found out I was South African and called me South Africa all day. Each tunnel section we came to he’d say- South Africa you do the full tunnel. Such a character.

    Hanoi looks more developed . It has all the same things , plus more high rise buildings and much better public transport like efficient network of brand new busses and sky train

      Ho Chi Minh City next year will also have a subway, they rarely live in apartments, so there are fewer high-rise buildings, in terms of traffic network, Hanoi is better.
      Hanoi as the capital should be prioritized, but Ho Chi Minh City remains the largest economic center in Vietnam. .

    If Paddy did his prior research he would know exactly why Saigon is called HCMC, and why HCM's body is in Hanoi.
    2 minutes on the internet and the job's a good'un.
    I pretty much loved all of Vietnam, inc both major cities of Hanoi and Saigon, both very different but both magnificent.
    For exactly why Paddy prefers Saigon, is why i preferred Hanoi.
    Great video.

      I can recommend getting the ferry from Hat Tien to Phu Quoc and afterwards bike into Cambodia to Kep and Kampot. Spend time there ...After that onward to Phnom Phen and back to HCMC although that road is heavily trafficked but doable in a day.

  • @johnspartan4617
    @johnspartan4617 Год назад +3

    I like how you apologised to the bike rider that nearly ran you down on the pavement. You should have included a clip of people crossing busy roads there in Ho Chi Minh where I found it so nerve racking as all the traffic continues until the just before you need to step in front of them.
