Sounds very sweet. 👏
Thanks Andrew! Still got a bit of tuning to do, but almost there.
Sounds really good, I do like Valencia Blue for tgat era of Triumphs…
Thanks! I agree, mostly, not so keen on it on the Spitfire.
You have done a great rebuild job on the Herald, what events will you take it too this year? Cheers Bob
Thanks Bob, probably keeping it quite local for the time being. I need to get some running in miles on it, so blasting down the A1 for anything further afield isn't going to be great for the engine. Considering getting the Spitfire out to the NEC Restoration Show next month though.
Engine sounds fantastic, do you have a list of parts used to change to an alternator system and how you rewired it, I will be updating my daughter, 1968 1360 convertible very soon. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks Bob
So the slightly less invasive wiring method is described here www.triumphclub.co.nz/?page_id=825 and I was running that setup till now. I've now rebuilt my loom and added a second alternator feed (modified wiring diagram here gitlab.com/jovisg/SpitfireMk3WiringDiagram/-/blob/master/Herald/1360/Printable_Herald1360_Wiring_Alternator.pdf?ref_type=heads)
You can make an alternator work with the dynamo brackets. But it's not that neat and the pulley alignment isn't great. The alternator equipped cars came with a different top bracket, and the bit that bolts to the block is cast (two parts, one cast, one tubular spacer plus one very long bolt). You also need an alternator, and a longer fan belt (I'm using a 1063 one specified for a Fiat 127). For the brackets, I'd give the Spitfire Graveyard a ring, they also show up on eBay, and you can get them new but that pushes the price up obviously!
Should Never let a freshly rebuilt engine idle or run without load… bore glazing will be the end result
My understanding is that to avoid knackering the (new) camshaft the engine needs to be run to 3k ish RPM for 20-30 mins. So what do you mean by without load?
