    The oneshot thing is interesting because I’ve heard Brennan Lee Mulligan claim that oneshots aren’t as easy as people think, because you have to know how to wrap things up within a set time limit which is hard

    • @Toulin
      @Toulin 3 года назад +1

      I was thinking about BLM and Matt Mercer's discussion where they talk about this. Trying to figure out how to wrap up a one shot is nearly impossible unless you're basically railroading the entire thing (which for first time PCs might be a good thing). It makes for more sense to try to set up a one shot with the idea that it'll probably be a 2-4 shot instead, especially as a new DM. Wrapping up a story is hard when you have dozens of sessions and WAY harder when you have a finite amount of time. I like the idea of using modules, as Lauren suggested, but even that can be a lot for a first time DM.

    • @hipsterbrigadier9428
      @hipsterbrigadier9428 3 года назад +3

      @@Toulin I'm prepping for being a first time DM and I've basically given up on the idea that it's a oneshot. I have an end point I want to get to and a basic outline but it won't be done in a single session

      Yep! My one-shot actually lasted almost a month. We meet up once a week and I am just very lucky that my players have shown up for every session and not have the horrors of cancellations like I've (and many other players) experienced.

    • @kid14346
      @kid14346 3 года назад

      @@Rick.Grayson My point is that the additional rules make your life as a DM a hell of a lot easier. Need to know how survival in a frigid wasteland works? Right in the DMG. Not sure if certain powers would be too strong on your monster? The Monster Manual has a ton of examples and the DMG literally has a make your own monster section. Even if you don't like these they exist as a reference point.
      It is about the actual ease of playing and making the game as a DM. Having a base point to reference and change later is easier than trying to make an entire system for things like alternate initiatives systems, lingering injuries, sentient magical items, monster powers, monster stat blocks, etc.

    Just adding my 50 Cents here: if you're part of a group as a player and like to toe dip into DMing, just offer your DM to run a oneshot at a appropriate point in the campain.
    There're always points in a campain, when there is an in-time break where a oneshot would fit in and most DMs will be thankfull when they get to play

    A trick about running into a ruling you dont know, to keep the momentum going amd maintain a better shot at sticking closer to the rules as written, is to have that player to find the rule while you move the story kineticicism over to someone else turn or "cut scene" and return to the active rule seeking player who hopefully has a ruling in hand. If not then make it up as it sounds just and fair in the moment and charge the player to find the ruling and remember it as it pertains to actions they might want to keep in mind later.

    Very interesting discussion. Thank you very much. I can just say that today in our lives we are so stressed and focused on being a "good something" or not being a "bad something" (choose by your own what to put in place of "something") that we forget to be "something". Life is so complicated that in any case we will do something good and something bad. I think the same can be translated about DMing. You don't have to think to be a good or a bad DM... just try to be a DM, your kind of DM... all the other things will rise up... give you time, be patient.

    Dice, location, players. I teach and train DMs in the sum of hundreds each year. Been DMing 30+ yrs. Ran 13 weekly groups (avg 13 -15 players) each in their own custom built worlds and campaigns/adventures you find on any shelves. 53 sessions each group each year. Over 200+ rotating players who remained 25+yrs in those worlds. Not including my home games, nor my con events where I hosted events as well. Thousands of players over the course of a year is not out of the ordinary. Hosted Adventurers League before it was even called Adventures League for hundreds of walk in players of varying character levels, same table, same time. This past weekend I just ran a teach n train event for 54 DMs new/old. Built 54 oneshots at that event, set up 54 session zero formats and scouted out proper player chemistry, helped build 54 new worlds, and 54 new sets of world mechanics for each unique table. I also hosted 3 seperate solo teach and trains for 3 DMs I found randomly on twitch / youtube doing livestreams. I am no one. I know that of all the DM teach and train events I have run for all of the DMs I instructed or games that I orchestrated... this was not the format I instructed/delivered. This is not the game it used to be anymore. This makes me sad. It had such potential. I guess my time is done with D&D. Half a lifetime. Over 300+ fully built adventure modules, thousands of worlds, thousands of events and players. I can't follow the path the brand has taken. I prefer the widest selection.

    From all of these videos I’ve watched about DMing and knowing how to run your game. It really all boils down to using the books as a guide, not a straightjacket. If it means bending some of the rules and fudging some dice to make sure your friends are having fun then that’s the most important aspect of DnD. It’s all interpretation of the field me the players

      LMoP was my first module i ran as a DM. It gives you everything you need for a multi session adventure. My players enjoyed it so much I spun a campaign off of it.
      Its great because it give your players a chance to learn the basics. Theirs some good traps. It has pre-made NPCs with more plot hooks. It really is pretty good starter.

      Short answer, YES. My choices for a first adventure are (1)IcespirePeak, (2)Phandelver, and (3)Heist. All of them can roll into Storm King Thunder if you decided to go long. Involving Heist, Summer is my favorite Season, but opinions can vary. Have a Blast. May All Your Hits be Crits and We all Grow Better Together.

      Quick tip. You dont need voices. Just describe the difference. If you dont make any difference between npcs and stuff then everything will feel Shitty.

      So I ran LMoP as a new DM, and I would say it's best to do if your friends are newish to dnd. I had a group who were already experienced dnd players, and the amount of goblin and orcs that you go through can make it feel a bit bland. With a new group, Lost mines is a great adventure. I've also played Dragon Heist and that one is quite interesting, but confusing. Good luck, hope this helped

      Had a player say, "I love it when you describe the characters in detail. That way I know when to take notes!" You don't need fancy voices, just start with slow/fast speaking tempo and raising and lowering your pitch and volume.

    I think as a novice DMer, you must learn the basic game mechanics before you start a spontaneous story line. Yes you can draft a bulletpoint form and direction but you must know the game mechanics before you start. Run a typical basic dungeon crawl with 3 to 5 plyrs and see how you manage and run Real-time Resource managements...

    Time spent watching this video is something I am never getting back in my life. The crux of this video - read the DM guidebook, in this video I will tell you what I did - and in the meantime I won't tell anyone interested - how to evolve a story, how as a new DM to chose between reading the block vs building up, if building up how much and in which direction, how to tip the players you as a DM want them to do, so the triggers for the story can work; how to set the difficulty on the adventure/campaign... essentially since everything is a learning experience, why even make this video!
    Worse worse experience of my life... and what is it with pressure - some of us have jobs which are way more demanding and pressure riddled, so could D&D not find two people who do not trivialize real life challenges, and make being a DM sound like the most challenging thing in life! This was a ridiculous experience.

    Good luck. DMs are the people that spend all the money and the new OGL has pissed people off to the point that you can expect people to migrate to other systems. Been playing everyone week for 5 years with graduate school buddies. I buy every book that comes out. But I also use 3rd party content. This content is a huge part of the community and helps everyone. If the new OGL goes forward as leaked, it will hurt DND more than its fans. Investors do not understand how this game works, and I don’t mean the mechanics. DMs are the people who recruit new players FOR YOU. DMs are the people you’re screwing over and will be super pissed. Please think about this.
