I made the "i wanna make music" decision about a year ago. I bought a small MIDI keyboard, downloaded a DAW and thought "hmm, i think i wanna be a producer". After almost a year of "How to reproduce ......" tutorials and learning a lot of techinal stuff, i was really disappointed of myself for being "not really a producer", producing didn't really fulfill that "i wanna make music" desire i had. A friend of mine (a piano player) suggested i learn music theory.
something i obviously should have learned from the beginning lol 😅
I found a great playlist for it on RUclips. And after a while i realized "I think i want to be a songwriter". I feel in love with the "abstract nature" of songwriting. And i already had a huge chunk of notes and voice notes of melodies that didn't really fit my past mindset of "i want to be a producer".
I am now on the second day of binge watching this channel and I LOVE IT. your videos are so informative and you are very relatable with your perspectives about songwriting. Hope you have a successful life

Hi April! I always look forward to your videos and it has really helped my writing. Quick question tho, I’m working towards my grade 1 piano. I’ve always wanted to accompany myself on stage while performing, so my question is what is your advice for beginner pianists, who want to write and perform their songs? Thank you x

Hi Misty! I'm so happy to hear that! 😊 I would start by playing things that feel comfortable and relatively easy while you write; you can always add more complicated piano parts later. I got started by playing simple block chords in my right hand and bass notes in my left, switching super slowly. My first piano songs were all in C Major with root position chords! The more you learn and grow as a pianist, the more things you'll be able to incorporate. This was totally a driving force for me - each time I learned something new in my piano lessons, I tried to write a song around it.
After you've written something, you can practice adding the more complex pieces one thing at a time. I like to divide my practice time by isolating each individual part. For instance, if I want to add an arpeggio that feels challenging to sing with, I'll practice singing the song with block chords, then I'll practice the whole song with the arpeggio and no vocals, and then I'll practice the arpeggio and vocals together. That way, I don't overwhelm and frustrate myself with a bunch of new things at once. This video might be helpful if you want some extra help with singing and playing at the same time: ruclips.net/video/iR10iYTnCLQ/видео.html.
I hope this is helpful!! 💜

@@AprilKeez Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my question! You’re a gem. I’ll definitely work on that, through my lessons and practice in learning piano l have learnt to slow things down and grow into it. This was very insightful ❤️

@@tolueasalako I'm so glad! Yes, piano definitely forces you to slow down; it's a great skill to have in this crazy, fast-paced world.
