      In Switzerland, we have stricts emission laws as well… probably even stricter ones. The car is probably already as clean as it can…. And usually, we spend a lot on maintenance to keep our cars well maintained, since we have to do a mandatory and official complete check every two years.

      Agreed. Ohio does not have safety inspections. Only a few counties have emissions testing. To get an out of state title switched it just needs a tow yard, auto dealer or police to match VIN to paper work. This Swiss guy could have brought the title and registration to Ohio and kept it or sell it with clear ohio title.

      It's not legal to have this car ANYWHERE in the United States. Doesn't depend on state emissions testing. When I was stationed overseas, you had to buy or have modified any auto imported into the United States unless you received an exception OR the car was over 25 years old/collectable. C63/AMG CAN be made Federal emissions compliant, but it's really expensive. The C240 comes in an emissions compliant version and that was what was in the shipping paperwork. This used to happen alot back in the 1980s. People would show up at the pickup location only to be told their "baby" was going to be shredded because is couldn't be made emissions compliant.

    • @youxkio
      @youxkio 2 месяца назад +15

      AGREE!!!! The reason is that the American car manufacturing lobby wanted to be protected by the government against imports of hypercars from Europe and others from Japan unless they established a greenfield/brownfield FDI operation in the US!
      This 25-year rule doesn't make sense anymore with so many US car brands under Stellantis' control.

    • @ConeSpark
      @ConeSpark 2 месяца назад +14

      @youxkio Well in this case the euro brands wanted it as well. Mercedes (and others) were very unhappy with all the grey market imports.
      At its peak 20% of Mercedes sales were from grey market cars (cars never meant for US sale in the first place) at discounts up to $11k (in the 80s!)
      Manufacturers as a whole wanted full control of what got sold. And the 25 year rule was born. Until Bill Gates got (bought) the show and display exception lol

    Easiest solution:
    1) Open montana LLC.
    2) Title and register vehicle under LLC.
    3) Since vehicle is over 11 years old its eligible for permanent registration.
    Montana has no inspection, no emissions, no vin check. Car never has to touch montana territory.

    And yet there are non U.S. market cars under 25 years old driving around the DC area. Not all are diplomatically registered. Some are registered in Virginia to German luftwaffe personnel who work at their facility at Dulles Airport by cargo area. I’ve seen a green W203 C220 CDI wagon and a new VW Polo registered in Virginia that work there. There is also a lot in Ft. Belvoir that has 70 series Land Cruisers, 300 series Land Cruisers, a couple Nissan Patrols, and some Toyota Hilux crew cabs sitting in it. Most are LHD but a few were RHD and some even had US Government license plates on them. There are also some armor conversion companies in the area that have new non US Land Cruisers and Patrols sitting in their lots waiting to be converted.

      If you're a foreigner temporarily assigned to an official posting (not diplomatic, necessarily, more akin to SOFA status that DOD employees enjoy overseas) in the USA, you can import a personal vehicle for the duration of your assignment, but the vehicle must be exported or destroyed at the end of the official assignment. There may be exceptions if a vehicle becomes 25 years old while it's in the States, but otherwise, it has to go when your job's finished. The US Government may also stockpile civilian vehicles at a central location for deployment worldwide, explaining a stash of otherwise non-compliant vehicles on an installation in the States.

      So get a good car that won't pass our safety testing anymore and drive it for three years in the US until the wheels fall off (for German standard) and then crush it and get yourself a cheap used US vehicle and import it free of duty as it is your personell vehicle and have it for half the price local dealers ask for it.
      Either sell it then for a profit or have fun.

    Not a huge Mercedes guy but there was no way we could do this especially when in the future gasoline cars will be a novelty and this will be one of the cars of all time

    I've seen a Mito registered in DC. Also an S15 Silvia before it was legal but it had tags nonetheless. Why not turn it into a racecar?

    I would think Switzerland would have better emissions than the United States. I didn’t have a clue Illinois has emissions inspection.

    It could have been imported into Canada. 15 year limit here vs the USA 25 year limit.

    Not even an MB guy, but it would've been a damn atrocity to scrap a perfectly fine v8 wagon, bravo to everyone involved in exporting it back. Odd how we send people back when they come here illegally, but destroy a car when it comes illegally.

    What a legend. I got so relieved when you told, that the car was imported back to EU. Woulda hurt to see this beauty of machinery completely crushed.

    That car looks amazing, so the government just said like “nah no more C63 AMG wagons”. Wow, you are a hero though. You didn’t even wanted it to get crushed, so just sneakily send it out of USA. Did it come back to its home? Btw it’s interesting you said Antwerp, that got my attention 😂
